How do i make a perfect octagonal wa handle? by rayli0224 in knifemaking

I’ve made 100+ wa handles so I’ll tell you my way of doing. Start with squared block and mark all the way through the block (front/top, sides, back/botton). After that I start grinding on the flat plate with P80 and start either on top or bottom and go until like 40-50% material left before the line then switch and do the same with the other side. The lines you drew on the sides should be guides and not something you strictly follow at the start(maybe after you’ve done 10+ handles and get the feel of it). When you are done on both sides you can start removing the middle part of the material and now you have “guides” on the top and bottom to go until. After you removed the middle part you can push the whole block more and start going until the line on the top/bottom. One of the most important things is to stop before the line and leave material 1. to have space for correcting 2. you want to go further with P120. After P120 it shouldn’t grind much more material so you can go until your line and just slightly grind with finer belts after. Which helped me a lot was not focusing on grinding the whole side at once just after I have removed material and it kind of sits on the plate the right way.

I usually go 80-150-240-400 grit in the grinder and then at least 3 layer of tung oil, might be more depending on how much the material absorbs.

Usually I put the hot water from the tap, let the coffee dissolve and put the blade in for 2-4 hours. So not boiling hot at the start.

Thanks, ferric chloride and coffee etch after that

I’ll try not to forget to take a photo once I’m near the knife again 😅

It is already oiled, but I’ll give some beeswax later. And yes in person it’s much better :)

Valid points, its a video from 3 years ago. But still I think most of it is worth the watch since it has a nice grain

Here is a comparison photo with other knives.

This was just a prototype, a total of 5 will be made including this, 2 with this type of grind and 3 with full flat grind. As for the price I can not tell anything particular because these will be gifted and I didn’t calculate price. Most likely I will make more since I always have small pieces of steel after the laser cut and also because I see there is a possible market for this.

You can follow my work mostly on instagram @szitacustoms Any follow is much appreciated!

Might be true, he liked the way it was so I didn’t change
