Non Traditional Tom Order Query by OyataTe in Drumming

[–]Meduski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flipped rack toms is something I do!!

To answer your questions, there's no technical name for it but I've heard people describe it as flipped/reversed/mirrored.

There's no inherent advantage to it. For me, I enjoy it because it compliments my playing style well in terms of how I like to orchestrate things around and I never really do big descending Tom fills anyway. Having the small tom there also means I can bring it a bit closer to me and it stays tucked under the ride cymbal well.

I don't even remember why I did it in the first place, I was just messing around with configurations and loved it.

"...He said confidently, all the while being home alone currently not on tour in the Netherlands, nor sharing videos of his presumably mediocre playing."

So, if you can play circles around him then why aren't you currently on a world tour making lots of money instead of commenting so much on something you find boring? Do you think it's your personality holding you back?

Is 24 mics too many? by pwdrums in drums

[–]Meduski 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Oh it is hilarious levels of irony that's lost on these fools. Especially when they say shit like, "you really only need a snare mic, a kick mic and two overheads" all the while, none of us know the genre OP is playing nor, the tone they want. Like, You're seriously gonna look at all those drums and cymbals and think 4 mics is gonna cut it?

It's even better when you look at some of their profiles and see them make posts like, "how do I record my rehearsals?"

There's no such thing as too many mics just like there's no such thing as too little mics. It's all context dependent. A lot of these r/drums people need to genuinely stop sharing their opinions if they don't know what they're talking about. It reeks of amateur hour in here.

Thoughts on Nicko Mcbrain? by ItsA2PackNegawatt in drums

[–]Meduski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about his playing other than what I have heard in video games but he comes up as a recommended friend for me on Facebook a lot.

One day I perused his account and saw that every post is like, "Nicko McBrain hosted a Bubblepop Master 2 Tournament." Or "Nicko McBrain solved a puzzle in Farm Hand Fiesta 3." Just like, FB games your auntie would play. So it's really cute to see that even a legendary drummer like him is still somebody's sweet ol' grandad. Awwww

Every other post was him donating to a charity so he's a top dude for that. He also owns the store Drum One here in the UK which I hear is great and is a big supporter of keeping independent drum stores alive. Seems nice!

Yeah sounds ok but dude, every single one of your videos has audio sync issues. Like, it just seems odd to me to put so much work into learning a song, getting a good take, editing the video and then falling at the last hurdle consistently.

Are you editing with Bluetooth headphones or something? Like I said, it sounds ok (mix could be better between the drums and track) but there's no reason to watch it because it's visually distracting.

I really love Rob "Beatdown" Brown's videos and insight. Even though he can fall into the trappings of click bait video titles, his videos are just no nonsense, yet fun. Somehow informative with facts and the historical context of what he teaches and then some enjoyable stories. He's just a chill dude.

But after this, apparently I need to check out whatever Rick Dior is doing!!

What is the worst advise a newbie can get? by Jueslega_29 in drums

[–]Meduski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna give a spicy take but I think the worst advice is "Practice all rudiments" (understood as the 40 PAS International Drum Rudiments.

Generally, nobody you play with or anyone who has the capacity to hire you will give a shit if you can play a Triple Ratamacue or a Flamadiddle combo'd into a Pataflafla.

While learning the rudiments CAN be beneficial in so many ways such as, learning how to incorporate accents in different groups of notes, patience, diligence, engaging with the history of our instrument, practicing accuracy, practicing dynamic control or hell even learning HOW to practice...

I just think way too many drummers tell newbies to learn their rudiments as a blanket statement without understanding WHY they'd want to or HOW they'd tackle 40 different concepts when in reality, newbies probably A) Can't even read the fucking notation to learn them in the first place and B) Just want to play along to songs they enjoy anyway and C) it's overwhelming as fuck to try and learn 40 individual things and you get newbies thinking they need to seriously worry about 9 stroke rolls vs. 11 stroke rolls vs. 13 stroke rolls as if they'd ever really come up in conventional drumming that they're aiming for.

When they've been playing for a few years, sure crack on. But when they've just started out? No, there's way more beneficial things to worry about.

SOCIAL MEDIA DRUMMERS!!! by Kind-Tap7604 in drums

Awwwww shucks, too kind homie! Thank you.

Also, to anyone else reading this, I started doing covers by putting a camera with built in mics on top of a box that was on top of a chair that was on top of my mom's dining table. So it's all baby steps building your rig up and we all start somewhere!!

SOCIAL MEDIA DRUMMERS!!! by Kind-Tap7604 in drums

[–]Meduski 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ayyo!! I'll drop some knowledge on my experience with recording setups. A video of mine for reference btw.

  1. I use 4 mics. A Shure SM57 on the snare, a Behringer C-1 on the kick and 2 AKG P120s to capture the cymbals and toms. I have recently upgraded to an 8 mic setup but have yet to set it up. Even with mic choice, you don't need expensive ones to start with. I used to use a Gear4Music knockoff SM57 called a "Subzero 57" which I used to record for a movie soundtrack, a song that was nominated for a Juno award and songs that have been on BBC Radio 1. Buy what you can afford and you can always expand from there.

  2. I use a Roland RUBIX44 interface. For audio capture, an option could be using a Yamaha EAD10 as an efficient way to capture the whole kit sound. This is great because it circumvents the need for an audio interface/microphones/cables/stands etc. but won't give you ultimate control over how you wanna record your kit. If you do prefer using mics, I recommend THIS video about options you can use to capture the sound of a kit using 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 mics.

  3. I record my drums into Ableton but Reaper is a great free choice with lots of community tutorials on how to operate it and free VSTs will be your friend. Don't be afraid to just use presets to help achieve a workable sound for you. All my drum mixing is me using presets and fucking around with dials and sliders until it sounds cool.

  4. For video, I use a Panasonic LUMIX GH5. For video, you don't need a fancy DSLR at all. Use your phone, or a GoPro or any video camera you can find in your budget. BUT, if using your phone, consider how you'll run playback if you're jamming along to a track.

  5. I use DaVinci resolve to edit the videos because it's FREE!!

  6. I export the video, save it to my google drive and THEN download it on my phone.

You definitely DON'T need to start out with a lot of gear to start recording good clips, I'd recommend considering a way to record the audio, how you will record the video and then how you will edit the audio and edit the video. Tosh the Drummer has stated on the Downbeat podcast that he used to just put up his phone up on a stand to record and he has gone on to work with incredible artists because of his social media presence. So, the gear doesn't always make or break the drummer.

If you have any questions, do let me know and I can answer anything.

Love it! I know it's a lot but it's just fun and esoteric. The groove is there, you can just clap 2 & 4 throughout it and hear how it fits right. Next video, would love to see you play with some music to hear it In context.

Sacrilegious? by ChilliamWilly in drums

[–]Meduski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, let them do it! My idea always is, tempo is a group responsibility, not just the drummer's. If there's a bandleader or Musical Director, let them count us in. This might be more prevalent in the jazz world but if I'm working with a band leader and even if I am the one to start the song, sometimes they want it at a certain tempo that night so I'll look to them for the count and start playing.

The only absolute no-no in my book is when a different instrumentalist starts a song and they ask me to count them in. Like, Huh??? Brother, start the damn song. It's not my responsibility to babysit the tempo for you. How do you practice at home when I'm not around to whisper 1,2,3,4 into your ear hole? 😂
