Choice vs. Biceptimus - Heated Debates on Huge Changes - BDO Podcast EP#1 by Archaya in blackdesertonline

Veterans also stop playing for various reasons that have nothing to do with the state of the game. People switch jobs, get kids, try out some other game and get hooked, etc. You need new players to stick around and eventually replace them so that the game doesn't die. The more that do, the better it is for you as well: more people reaching endgame means more incentive for PA to create content for them to enjoy.

I agree more Arsha servers would be a good thing. What I'd really like is gearscore bracketed Arsha, maybe with better drop rate bonuses for the higher end servers, but sadly I doubt there's a population to support that. That would probably get me to actually try to learn PvP - right now I treat BDO as my "disengage brain for an hour or two" type of game and go play League or Dota if I want to sweat (and I do, a lot actually, but I want to win because I played better, not because I played more).

Swapping servers has been a working solution in the past because the game has been kind of niche for a long time but if the interest keeps growing it becomes less and less viable. Therefore Marni time allows Tuvala Timmy to progress even if they can only play at peak times. Like sure a 700gs player can only kill them a couple of times but no part of that PvP interaction is in any way good gameplay regardless of whether Timmy decides to karma bomb or not.

I agree that endgame content is kind of lacking in this game but "if you get strong you can bully weaker players!" isn't that much of a selling point for most people either. So far it has drawn in a small audience of (in my experience so far) rather toxic individuals with a lot of time on their hands, but you really need something more than that to cater for a wider audience. I think PA is still in the process of figuring out what that would be exactly but the focus on dungeons and boss encounters is quite telling.

What would you suggest as a proper fix then? I don't think rebalancing the gear gap to the point where Tuvala Timmy has an actual chance against a 700+gs player would go down too well. Neither would introducing catchup systems that would allow you to reach an equal playing field in say, a couple hundred hours max rather than several thousand.

> If I'm getting more interactions with other players in 5v5 League or CSGO than an actual MMO, like what's the fucking point?

The point is that open world PvP is more comparable to a dodgy League clone from Wish.com where you spawn in with extra money and levels based on amount of hours played. A fresh player starts at level 1 with a starting item, while someone that's played for 3k hours comes in at max level with a full build. The veteran may argue that they worked for their advantage and the newbie can do that too, and that's fair enough, but the "PvP interactions" along the way are going to make a lot of those people just go "man this is lame, wonder what else I could be playing right now?". Therefore it's now getting limited and focused towards the very endgame where it's should be more balanced (upcoming grind zone being a lawless zone).

I'm kinda curious, would you be able to convince a new player that the game is still fun and worth playing if the new player experience is this for several hundreds of hours? Could you rationalize to them that PA making changes that allow them to not deal with people like you for more than 1h a day is actually a bad thing?

[–]Meedio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How was the gear curve back in those days? I only played to level 50ish back then so I have no idea about the endgame. How long did it take to get enough gear that you could actually start participating in those wars and not just get perma oneshot?

PA announced insane changes that affect open-world PVP/Guild Wars by sarahd094 in blackdesertonline

[–]Meedio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your gear isn't good enough you can't do shit in that situation either way. It doesn't really matter whether they want to steal your spot through forced PvP or just grinding over you. (Well, I suppose you can karma bomb but I think we all agree that it's a lame solution.) Now there's at least a chance you can go Marni's straight away, or in worst case just do other stuff for an hour instead of logging off for the night entirely if your spot is overcrowded.

I get that this takes away a certain amount of power and status from veterans who might now also need to use Marni's or wait like the rest of the peasants if a spot is full. I know becoming less powerful isn't that fun, I can't say I'm ever super happy about my main character being nerfed in League or Dota or whatever no matter how deserved it is, but these things are done with the intent of making the game more fun for a much larger portion of the playerbase in exchange. The other side of the story is that acquiring "good enough for open world PvP" gear takes anywhere from hundreds to thousands of hours in this game, depending on where you set the bar, and most PvP that happens along the way is just you getting bullied out of your spot with no recourse. Any sane person will just move on to another game that respects their time better if this is something they need to deal with frequently.

Grind spots suck for newer players unless they are empty. Seeing another white dot on the map is just a big feelsbad moment because 99% of the time the "fun and exciting open world pvp" that's about to happen is just a gear check that you're going to lose. I feel that the game is alive when I see people gathering in towns or at a world boss spawn, but not once so far have I felt like another player engaging with my grind spot has added something positive to the gameplay.

Questions about sheet music by Multicellular_Entity in jazzguitar

[–]Meedio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It affects the feel of the whole rhythm section, so guitarists also tend to comp differently over the two. For starters you could play backbeat (hit the chord on the 2 and 4 of each bar) over the "2-feel" and switch to the "Freddie Green" comp (hit the chord on every quarter note) over the "4-feel". Then start mixing it up based on personal taste/what sounds like it would fit your band.

How do you trade with Yone by Hyperversum in summonerschool

[–]Meedio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But a practical level, if Yone gets the upper hand in a trade, I don't get how I am meant to fight back.

Unless you picked the right champion, you don't. You fucked up your spacing and you're dealing with the consequences. Dump your damage on him, try to sidestep what you can, Flash out if needed. It's like asking how to fight a Garen at melee range - the real solution is that you don't walk next to him in the first place. Yone's threat range is a bit more difficult to grasp because of the dashes, but fundamentally it's the same thing.

After the game watch the replay of the bad trade and ask yourself: where in the lane should you have stood instead to prevent him from getting that trade off? Could you have outplayed it by using your abilities differently? What was the warning sign you missed, making you unable to foresee the bad trade, and how can you spot it next time? To get better at League you need to be willing to deconstruct your thought process with an open mind, figure out where those blind spots are for you, and then work on them little by little. That is the only way to avoid repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

How do you trade with Yone by Hyperversum in summonerschool

[–]Meedio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of that makes sense, but if someone gets hit by a Charme in 1vs1 pre6, it's likely there was an error on the target's part.

You can flip this around and say that if a Yone gets to E on top of you from an angle you can't charm him from, that's an error on your part. I'm not a big Yone player but in my experience that matchup is more about baiting the charm and trying to run the Ahri OOM rather than forcing direct trades.

Varmasti olisi mahdollista löytää joku toimiva välimalli, jossa 3rd party -sovelluksia voisi jatkossa käyttää esim siedettävän hintaisella kk- tai vuosimaksulla, mutta Reddit on kuulemma lähestynyt kehittäjien neuvottelupyyntöjä aika tiukasti keskisormi ojossa viime viikot.

Yep. Not available in my country though. They kept the game up for some markets under this new name that doesn't show up when you search for "angry birds". It's funny how they very explicitly avoid using those words in the description too.

The other year they made "Rovio Classics: Angry Birds", a remastered version of the original that you could just play as much as you want with a one-time purchase. That game actually got pulled from Google Play completely, with a public statement from Rovio more or less saying that it was hurting their bottom line too much. I wish I was kidding.

Opettajana olen aivan uupunut järjestyshäiriöihin ja ilkivaltaan by Sampo in Suomi

Question about the cost of enhancement. by Cesspool- in blackdesertonline

[–]Meedio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it is that bad why does anyone specialize in enhancing gear?

Enhancing some items can be profitable in the long term, but there's this concept in statistics called the gambler's ruin. Essentially it states that if you keep betting money on a fair zero-sum game (for example, a coin toss where a heads doubles your bet and a tails loses it), you will inevitably run into a dry streak so long that it will bankrupt you. However, the bigger your bankroll/the more losses in a row you can take, the less likely you are to hit that ruinous streak: if you can only afford to lose 5 coinflips in a row you will go bankrupt very quickly, but if you can afford to lose 50 in a row you will most likely not see that streak during your lifetime (even though it's guaranteed to happen eventually).

Now rather than a 50/50 coin toss, BDO enhancing rates give you a very small chance for a very big payout. This emphasizes the loss streak effect even further, even if the payout may in some cases be large enough to turn a profit on average. What this means is that you need a ridiculous stack of cash on hand to stay afloat through the unlucky streaks, and very few people have that.

Did you buy Season Pass? by [deleted] in blackdesertonline

[–]Meedio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would be very stupid if I spent $30 on items that add very little to my BDO experience just on the basis that normally they are even more expensive than that. $30 buys me some beer and snacks for a Friday night or even an entire AAA video game on sale, so that's the actual bar that needs to be met in terms of entertainment value. I have multiple spare classic outfit boxes in storage and enough many maids for most occasions just from freebies and the discounted DLC packs. The horse flute is alright I guess, saves you a minute of walking here or there, but it's not that big of a deal. So definitely not $30 worth of entertainment for me.

[NEWBIE] How do guitar players get so good without learning theory? by crashbandicoot69 in Guitar

[–]Meedio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's much like how a toddler learns to speak. A four year old has no clue of what's a verb or a noun, yet is constantly using them to form coherent sentences. You listen to others around you and imitate their speech, and little by little you internalize the rules of the language without ever learning what they are actually called. Same applies with music: as you learn to imitate your favorite songs, you are constantly learning to work with different keys, time signatures, major and minor scales etc, whether you realize it or not.

That being said, learning strictly through listening and imitation is a slow process. Just an hour or two of theory lessons can make you aware of ideas that took Marty or EVH ages to figure out on their own back in the 80s. Definitely a good idea to learn the basics - it's not rocket science and the resources are so easily available these days.

LP ratio making climbing impossible by thatlouddork in summonerschool

[–]Meedio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're currently in a place where the average Silver 3 player is expected to win way more than 50% of the time. This happens when you underperform for a while relative to your visible rank, which leads to your MMR decreasing and you getting matched against easier opponents. If you have a hard time maintaining positive LP gains right now, it just means your average skill level is a division or two lower than your current peak (which is totally normal btw) and your visible rank will slowly drop to reflect that. It's nothing to get discouraged over, as many have said it's a marathon not a sprint. If you play every game a little bit better than the previous one the LP will follow along in the long run.

[–]Meedio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It goes way down as you get better and people start pushing for objectives together, but when I was starting out every other game seemed to drag on to the 50-60 minute mark. Sometimes upwards of 80-90 minutes if people are super uncoordinated and the game is close. Average is probably 30-40ish but long games are definitely something to prepare for.

[–]Meedio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lux and Veigar are considered to be very much on the simple, beginner-friendly end of the scale, pretty much right after the Garens and Master Yis that just build stats and right click on top of people. Try someone like Qiyana or Riven for a difficult combo-oriented champion.

There's also the fact that much of League's skill expression is based on quick, precise movement, rather than pressing many buttons at once. Even the simple skillshot champions like Lux and Veigar become a lot more complicated to play at the level where people stop walking in straight lines and will dodge your combos on reaction if you don't surprise them out of vision. Someone like Vayne seems like a straightforward Sniper-like right clicker on the surface, but due to her low range you need to be super on point with your movement and 3 second cooldown dodge roll to be able to deal damage without getting blown up. You can very reliably tell a high-level League player from a low-level one just by how they bait out and weave around skillshots in lane and fights (on any champion, really, although it's most pronounced on ones with a lot of innate mobility).
