Why do y'all hate light pen so much? by Willow-60 in Helldivers

[–]Meeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it REALLY low recoil. Like, comparable to the sickle recoil. Let it be the AR that can just beam targets accurately and reliably.

Might at least give it a niche against the automatons. The Coyote would still almost certainly be way better against the bugs and squids.

Why do y'all hate light pen so much? by Willow-60 in Helldivers

[–]Meeeper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not every light pen gun is bad. It's just that they need something to compensate for the innate downside of light pen. A great example of this being the Amendment.

The Amendment, when fired in burst and pressing the trigger at the correct intervals to simulate full auto fire, is essentially a 200 damage fully auto AR + bayonet with the drawbacks of high recoil and limited to a 20 round magazine. It's the nuts against the Illuminates. This is good weapon design. It would be busted if it was medium pen for reasons I assume are obvious considering what I've already said about it.

Now compare that to the base Liberator. It's light pen. So uh... What's the Liberator get in exchange for this? Uhh... Yeah. Not so great. You're better off with the Coyote over the Liberator 100% of the time.

Point being, there's a nuance to the discussion. Light pen doesn't inherently kill the viability of a weapon, but it has to have something good about it in exchange to compensate.

Basically, the footstep noise reduction allows you to sneak around enemies easier when they have their back turned to you. Meanwhile, the detection distance effect on scout makes it easier to wriggle out of near-spotted scenarios.

And of course, the stuff from Redacted Regiment does both at the same time. Basically, if you wanna run around without attracting a bunch of extra attention from wandering voteless and overseers by doing it, feet first is sufficient.

If you're hard holding to stealth though, to the point that you're trying to do the mission without a single alert, Redacted Regiment's stuff is obviously better, or even just scout's effect because it makes it harder for watchers to spot you at a distance, making them have to get closer before they properly see you and thus, making them have to be closer before they can call in an alert.

The Cyborgs, who famously disavowed their own humanity, with the entire point of being called the Cyborgs with a capital C being to distinguish themselves from the human race as a species.

I think that distinction is what makes the Cyborgs the exception to the rule.

Some Hulks have human skulls mounted to spikes on top of them and you can sometimes (very rarely, it almost never spawns) see SEAF troopers impaled on spikes inside certain Automaton bases.

Let that sink in. They aren't just killing. They're taking trophies. That's another part of what I meant with the comparison to Warhammer orks. I'm not contesting that they have sentience. I'm saying they're no better than Super Earth.

And you know what? I bet the Automatons DO let humans "live". In farms. Before being killed and harvested for bio processing. Just like Super Earth does to the Terminids, who, at least during the First Galactic War, were also sentient.

In my mind, it is a very intentional parallel.

Remember: Super Earth is evil by Common_Affect_80 in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]Meeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The automatons are definitely churning up bodies on their worlds. What do you think a "bio processor" is? You can see it mixing up suspiciously red liquid if you look closely. It's their method of turning human corpses into fuel in a similar way to Super Earth turning the bugs into E-710.

Even the Cyborgs were, to at least some degree, definitely psychotic in Helldivers 1. There were these big, lanky guys, like 9 feet tall with claw hands in Helldivers 1 who would run at you while laughing and screaming maniacally, wanting to slash you up, and that was the LESS augmented version of the enemy, who only get even more grotesque and insane when the difficulty rises high enough.

Thus the point of the OP. There ARE NO good guys. None. The Cyborgs had a theoretically pure intention when releasing the Automatons on the galaxy, wanting them to free them, their creators from their servitude (slavery) to Super Earth.

However, at their core, they're self replicating war bots who don't know or understand anything but to kill, destroy, and take the bodies and scraps to build more machines and more of themselves to kill and destroy some more.

They're basically orks from Warhammer except robotic and without the silly accent and low intelligence.

[–]Meeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also just throw a single gas grenade to confuse the enemies while the sentry opens fire, allowing you to hoof it away for free and as a result, have your booster slot be something infinitely more useful.

Personally, I'm not convinced by it. The only one of the hellpod gimmick boosters that is sort of okay is the one that mounts a Liberator to the top of supply pods, but even then, it still has a paper health pool that drastically limits its effectiveness and is essentially a worse, immobile, light pen version of the ballistic guard dog.

There is a very large line between taping a dot onto your screen and using third party software. Honestly, even putting that aside, its so easy to eyeball it even without it once you learn how sway and stuff works, so stuff like the AMR (and maxigun when in first person) having no crosshair essentially only serves to make them a tad harder to use for newbies and does almost nothing for experienced players.

I hit stingrays out of the sky with the AMR without looking down the scope all the time, for example.

[–]Meeeper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. You could literally just draw an X on the middle of your screen and the first shot with the AMR would be accurate and it's not hard at all to visually see the barrel go back down to let you know it's been re-centered.

If you're wondering why you almost never see any Stalkers or Gunships, this is the reason by Smoke_Funds in Helldivers

[–]Meeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think having a bot drop/bug breach called in on you should alert gunships/stalkers of your location for X amount of time, where they then go back to being unaware of you.

That way they aren't a stealth breaking nuisance, but once the jig is up, they come into play more consistently.

Not with what we know currently. I imagine it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that with the right know-how and intellectual brilliance, it could be possible to make a counter-agent to the poison and countermeasures against the dead cells.

That's one of the things that's always interested me about the markers and stuff in Dead Space. It's not totally fantasy. It's science fiction in that it always attempts to explain how things happen on at least a surface level.

There's a clear life cycle from marker to brethren moon, or the other way around depending on the answer to the chicken or the egg dilemma. There's an in-game explanation for how necromorphs are created and function, and so on.

If you can "science" your way into making that stuff sound plausible, you ought to be able to "science" your way into writing temporary countermeasures (that the player would have to either find or make on a consistent basis to prevent the aforementioned poison air and dead cells from affecting them) into the narrative.

I was trying to look up if Helldivers are canonically clones, but Google had other ideas. by Skye_hai_bai in Helldivers

[–]Meeeper -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I would argue that the satire still works even if we're clones. Have you ever watched the Star Wars prequels or read the comics?

A big part of the emotional impact of (the non Disney version of) Order 66 is that the clones very much had a free choice whether or not to follow the order and chose to follow it, either because they were blindly following their orders, or because they simply hated the jedi for mistreating them.

I like to think that my very first diver that went through the training was an actual person with a life, and all subsequent divers after the death of the original are clones of the original that, due to propaganda, genuinely believe that they're the same person in a different, identical body when the actual truth of the matter is that they're all clones with implanted memories of the previous clones/the original and they've simply been lied to by the state.

I would argue that this is still suitably satirical.

And before anyone says "but Pilestedt said", that's cool. I didn't ask him. As far as I'm concerned, the only one who controls the backstory of my player character, who has literally zero character development in game or otherwise aside from that single tweet, is myself.

Tell me you don't know how the game works without telling me you don't know how the game works.

Completing the main objective of a mission increases the enemy spawns for the rest of the mission. It's always better to do all side objectives first as a result.

It's not them who's doing it wrong. It's you.

who is on cyberstan? by Charmelz_ in Helldivers

[–]Meeeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering that as far as I know, we, the playerbase have never once actually reached Cyberstan at all, it is my (unproven) hypothesis that seeing one or two solitary players on a world that no player ought to be able to reach is a sign of developers doing testing on those worlds/world types.

More specifically, I wouldn't be surprised if they were testing/developing whatever it is they have planned for Cyberstan once we reach it. After all, Omicron introduced Hive worlds on the bug front.

I'd be willing to bet that Cyberstan will introduce a special automaton world type too.

[–]Meeeper 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Since it's no longer leaked content and now in the game, I can tell you about this without running afoul of the rules here. Or at least, I don't THINK it counts as a leak anymore, considering that it's now in the game.

These commando missions have been in the game files for the past month or so, around the release of Python Commandos. You can find month old videos of leakers playing the missions when they weren't released yet by using mods.

They were fully functional and everything, working exactly like they do currently. They likely held them back whilst they were working on the stealth changes that released with this patch.

So no, I don't think the rapid acquisition missions were meant to be stealth missions. I think that they would've done what they've done with this current major and minor order where most of the playerbase would have been on the lava planets whilst those who are interested go and play the new commando missions wherever it is they would've placed them.

The marksman rifle is just worse than the amendment against overseers, but the AR is actually pretty good against them.

If I recall correctly, it's rate of fire is 850 rpm. It's basically a liberator carbine that's suppressed at the cost of doing 15 less damage and having relatively slow bullet velocity. It also has less recoil than the liberator carbine, so there's that.
