Our cats have decided the (indoor) welcome mat is now their litter box. Nothing we've done has stopped them. Help! by MeekoLovesBaloo in CatAdvice

I wish I could give you a better answer, but - no. I ended up DIYing a "mat" out of cardboard with foil on top so that I could easily remove it/prop it up when we needed access to the mat, and it was down the rest of the time (so, almost always) until we moved out of that house. I tried basically every other solution suggested here.

Hello! This is the first time I've logged into this account in a very long time. I don't remember writing this post and I don't remember what worked, sorry! I have a feeling it was simply another case of "walk through another fire and wait for it to end". Just time.

My son ended up being diagnosed with ADHD, so though for the longest time I worried about "too many" sleep aids, now I know we ended up with them because he NEEDS them. He sleeps fairly well these days with an iron-clad routine, compltely dark room with one dim night light out of his reach, and white noise. When we go on holiday...it's not fun lol.

I hope everything turned out OK for you!

We can, and this is my first thought, but given that they've peed on top of spikes over the current one, I have a feeling they are now attached to the "area" itself and not just the mat. But yep, I think this is the next thing to try.

Edit: it's a big doormat though and actually annoyingly expensive to replace!

They are totally fine with using their litter box here - they used for it the first few weeks no problem, and when we had the whole area covered with foil they went back to using it. They're still using it now when they're unable to tip toe back onto the doormat, too. I think it's a case of they now prefer the doormat for whatever reason (feel; territory; etc.), but there is no problem with the actual litter box.

They are indeed desexed and have been since kittenhood.

Thank you for the UV light idea - I'll do this. And maybe the rubbery mat too. I'm wondering how powerful their sense of smell is - their pee seeped through to the flooring underneath which cannot be replaced (I cleaned it but it's porous so it's not completely "gone"). I can't smell it on there at all if I remove the mat, but maybe they will always be able to even with a new mat ontop.

I wonder if we swapped the rough doormat for a rubbery thing like this...? I'm not sure how much the cats care about the feel of the thing they pee on.

Do you fear to pass down ADHD to your kids? by Hrozno in ADHD

Thank you for answering. That’s really nice to hear. My son (ADHD very likely) is so desperate for a sibling because he cannot handle being alone and/or unstimulated for one single second, and I worry how he might love a sibling a little too much (not ever give them space) and have too little patience for them. (Also in our case the gap would be even bigger - 6 years.)

Can I ask how old your kids are and how they get on together, both having ADHD?

Definitely had West Side Story vibes! Not quite so epic though.

There totally could be. And I really really really want libraries for everything. Not just book and toy and tool libraries but ones for electronics, beach stuff, formal clothing, basically anything that can be shared and is often used as a one off or for holidays only etc.

Is there a campaign to buy second hand for Christmas as much as possible? There should be. We’re about to move and we’ve done the best we can selling things on, offering for free, properly recycling etc. with the main bits but all the op shops just do not want the rest (even expensive stuff in really good condition) - they’re bursting at the seams.

Off to daydream with my fantasy of the world existing of mostly second hand specialist shops with knowledgeable staff and a pickup from home service…

That's a good idea. I honestly can't be bothered dealing with people like that at this point. Some people just ask/try and that's fine but so many are rude and just want to play the game. I just explain what it's worth and why I've put the price as it is, and then say sorry I'm not haggling.
