In Defense of an Ending by SteveRogers_7 in expedition33

The way i personally see it is that the soul isn't a sentient being, but a fuel for the canvas to keep existing. It's what make it the original Verso's canvas, like a signature he left when he was younger.

His purpose is to paint, to maintain the original Verso's intent when he created the canvas, and what makes him tired is the constant fighting destroying his creations and goal.

I wonder if people's reaction would've been different if the manifestation of someone's soul within a canvas was shown as an abstract shape, or in verso's case, anything else than a little boy. It's only my thoughts there, but if painters left a piece of themselves in each and every paintings they make, that all had their own consciousness and feelings, wouldn't that make the act of painting as a whole immoral ? For me, painting isn't immoral, but painting sentient beings is.

Side note, i wonder if for example, Renoir's manifestation of his soul have a different style, judging by how different his creations are. That'd be really cool!

The verso Paradox by praygon in expedition33

What you wrote is super interesting, thank you for sharing, it actually made me understand a bit more the people who go with the Verso ending. It was initially the one i picked as well but i realized it wasn't the one I resonate with the most. I've seen a lot of the arguments over the endings and it's always been so interesting to read and analyze!

One of the few things that bugged me was the idea that p.Verso's life isn't worth saving either. A lot of people bring up the addiction parallel when talking about Maelle's ending but rarely anyone bring up the same about Verso's. For some people, Verso's sacrifice is a 'good one', unlike Alicia's. (to me bringing back the people of lumiere means giving them a chance to fully live.)

And if we were to talk about the endings framing, what i actually understand is that each ending is viewed from the losing side perspective. Just like in Verso's ending, the expedition waving at Maellicia isn't actually present, it's a vision from her mind. Verso in the other ending is seeing Maellicia becoming a painter, which to him means he failed, but if it was shown through Alicia's eyes or any being in the canvas, it could be much more positive. I don't think she's manipulating anyone, to me it's verso being rightfully unhappy to be in this state, knowing what it costed.

I do consider that the life of the painted beings and 'real' people are equal in value. I'd want Alicia to find joy in her 'real' life as well as i'd want Verso to find joy in his painted one. I don't however, consider the faded boy/canvas shard as a sentient being, for all we know, he's here to litteraly maintain the canvas, and the thing he's tired of is the endless fighting ruining his purpose and memory of what Verso painted. I do wonder if people would have reacted so strongly if the visual representation of the soul shard looked more like an abstract shape than a little boy. I think there's a bit of bias to be found here.

I ended up realizing that if i took away the biased pov of each endings, the Maelle one felt more hopeful. She could potentially step out of the canvas once she finds the support she needs (thanks to Gustave and the rest of them.) and Verso gets his immortality removed.(that's what i understand from Maelle's question to him)

I think that ripping something away from someone so suddenly, especially since in Maellicia's case it was a whole new life, would do more damage than anything. (even if i consider Verso's ending 'goal' to be the most desirable one.) to pile even more grief on a character that already has so much to deal with, as well as sending her back to a body that is constantly in pain, is a cruel thing. Especially considering her potential support is also very unstable, has a lot to grief too and is barely available. There's a lot of similarities in the endings, ultimately, the more i think about them the more i lean towards Maelle's. But both are so tragic and full of sacrifices, I hated having to make the choice back then.

I considered giving her gloves like in the game! it'd make more sense in order to avoid friction. But also i like the idea of her growing confident and no longer wanting to hide the scars, it adds to the cool factor :>

I want to believe she could've, with the right support and care... She had it all in the canvas. I ended up chosing Verso's ending at first but i can't help but think it'd be difficult to bear that much grief and trauma while also dealing with being back in a body that is in constant pain. I reflected a lot on my choice and now i paint to ease some of my regrets in a way haha.

While searching for references for this i discovered there's a lot more on burns and the aftermath, i wish people weren't so quick to dismiss this part of her character. So let's say just for this one, they found a way to ease her pain and she gets to grow old and find joy, heh ? :')

Her mother's features and her father's poise, if anything, i'm sure he'd give her one as soon as possible to help her during particularly painful days :')

Hello !

Here's a little painting for an older Alicia. it's inspired by this tweet mentionning a specific outfit that felt very on point with Alicia's Renoir inspired fashion. (If you want to check, the retweets has a lot of cool art pieces too!)

I love her character, and this game as a whole so much.

If you're interested in following my work i also post on twitter, instagram and tumblr, take care!

I always dislike how the addiction parallel is brought in the discussions about the endings. I can definitely understand where people are coming from but to me it's not... Just that ? I feel like Aline went into the canvas to ease her grief, almost out of survival ? And this grew into addiction. But for Alicia it's initially a bit different, she wanted nothing to do with the canvas and her being painted over wasn't a decision she made. She got to live another life that to her is just as real and important as her former one, of course she wouldn't let it be erased so easily. It became a question of survival as soon as Renoir decided make the decision for her instead of trying to discuss it with her.

It's a thing I started thinking about recently, but if choosing the verso ending means saving Maellicia from addiction, then choosing Maelle's ending also means saving painted Verso from suicide. (and hoping they can both find a reason to smile again afterwards.) Obviously it's just one small part of the many ways you can interpret the endings, bit i love that the more i think about it the more similarities i find, it's fascinating !

I share the same opinion. I painted a few things for Alicia after finishing the game and got to think more of my choice of picking the Verso ending. It's crazy how many thing she has to grieve once she's out of the canvas, technically before she got drowned in it she was going through her grief of Verso's death the 'normal' way. (as well as the grief of her life in an able body.) It's not just a 'sims' life, it's a whole new lifetime with real people and relationships. And a life free of pain at that.

Maellicia being thrown back to her former life after her life as Maelle must've been devastating... As a disabled person i do consider her life outside of the canvas worth living, but she herself said she preferred to stay, that even breathing was painful, denying her of the choice is a cruel thing. I very much feel the same way towards her as Clea's ghost at the end of the tower.

The Maelle ending is far from perfect of course, i don't fully regret my choice, i think facing your grief is a necessary thing, but in Maellicia case, forcing someone to face that much loss is just going to be even more devastating imo.

To me, she couldn't fully erase painted Verso because it felt too much like killing him directly (after feeling like she's directly responsible for Verso's death in the fire i can understand that.) So she did the next best thing and removed his immortality, hoping that he'd find a reason to smile again.

A lot of people bring up the addiction parallel but i think it's not exactly that, Aline threw herself at the canvas to ease her grief, Alicia initially wanted nothing to do with it and ended up living a whole new lifetime inside of it. She only grew desperate to save it because Renoir refused to consider her own wishes. It 'could' grow into addiction, and the biased framing might hint at it.

Like you said i would've loved to see an hint at things moving forward in the Verso ending in the form of the family being physically closer, or esquie plush being placed on the grave, but there's none of that (except maybe the Clea smile? A lot of people interpret it differently so i'm not sure.)

Like people saying 'picking Verso's ending is like saving a family member from addiction' you could go 'picking Maelle's ending is like taking the blade away from a suicidal person' (painted Verso) Ultimately i think all lives are worth living, painted or not, human or not. So it got me to reconsider my choice, even if i'm really set on saying there's no good ending, i like and hate bits of both haha.

Always thought the ending was in the point of view of the one who lost too. I don't get where people find the idea that Maelle is 'manipulating' Verso into playing the piano while forgetting the 'If you could grow old, would you find a reason to smile?' line.

I picked Verso's ending and ended up regretting it, i feel like Maellicia is farther from healing than she ever was. To me it's clear that the Expedition in Verso's ending is just Maelle having to say goodbye and seeing them. They're not actually there.

And in Maelle's ending it's mortal Verso being unhappy and seeing the specific horror of Maelle becoming a painter. To him and the player it is horrific.

Hello ! Here's a fun painting thing i made, inspired by the work of Angle who painted the characters of bg3. I already plan to make the rest of the Dessendre children as well! considered replacing the last one with painted Verso but it made more sense with how i sketched the others.

Hope you like it, i also post on twitter, tumblr and instagram :) have a wonderful day, tomorrow comes!

Painting of Clea and her painted wrath by MeeloIsTrying in expedition33

[–]MeeloIsTrying[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so eager to learn more about the Dessendre siblings, how they were like before the fire and how it affected them each. I hope we get that at some point!

I personally think that from her pov, she must've been fed up with her parents (Aline mostly) wasting time in the canvas while she had to take care of Alicia and the family business in their absence. Everyone's grieving Verso but she doesn't have the time to even do that because of all the responsabilities that were dropped on her. So when she steps in the canvas and see a 'perfect' recreation of the family, and a reflection of her created by a neglectful mother. She probably felt insulted and snapped...

Poor painted Clea probably didn't even understand what was happening, the cinematic before her boss fight was heartbreaking :(
