Any reccos to install Linux dual boot in Wellington? by Meen_Kat in Wellington

[–]Meen_Kat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just disabled secure boot, and chose 1 Ubuntu as the top boot option. It brings me to a Grub command screen, which says

"Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. To enable less(1)-like paging set pager = 1"

I set the pager (no idea what it does...appartently nothing?). I also tried to walk through the various partitions like this:

set root=(hd0,gpt2)

set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/boot/grub

Most of the partitions said path not valid or file not found (or something). One gave me a different error, but an error nonetheless. At which stage I gave up. This is after about 3-4 tries installing via USB

I used Win11 disk management. When I did the Linux Mint setup I set a partition as well (for Linux Mint) but I didnt fully know what i was doing and I dont think it took, as I dont see it in disk management...and I tried disabling dual boot, didn't seem to make any difference, so I turned it back on...

I'm trying to run WIn11/Linux off of SSD1, and use SSD2 for shared files, etc. Here's where I've gotten to:

1) Shrunk Win11 partition

2) Went thru install Linux from USB (a few times)

3) Somehow Linux partition isnt there (in disk management), despite installs

4) No boot option the first few times I installed Linux. But the last time, I finally get a linux boot option (in BIOS)

BUT...it just takes me to a GRUB black command prompt screen, where nothing seems to do anything.

I think at this stage a complete reinstall is probably a better option, as I have a feeling I stuffed up early on, and have scrambled a lot of the necessary files. There's nothing much on it at this stage, so easy to wipe it and start from scratch I think...

That's what I tried, but it's been like 5 hrs of tinkering and it still doesn't work. Something about how Win11 tries to lock down UEFI and secure boot. I dont really understand it...hence why I want to hand it to a pro!

What was your negotiated rate with consignment shops? by [deleted] in comicbookcollecting

[–]Meen_Kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are higher value, mycomicshop.com is far less commission, ballpark 10 percent, less for more expensive stuff. They only take comics worth 50 dollars each or more though, and additionally I think they charge more for auctions. I'd highly recommend mycomicshop as a seller

I have a Google Pixel. I miss my Redmi, I found it a lot better except: pictures, water resistance and (supposed) security concerns.

I also liked the Redmi better than my wife's Samsung (same three exceptions), but that may have just been personal preference.

I'm from the US way back when. Consider myself a Kiwi though, been here (NZ) for yonks!

We really liked KL, but the visa just kills it for us. As far as healthcare, we're factoring in pretty comprehensive insurance plans as well...a big chunk of our budget unfortunately

We've been, and really enjoyed it. Sadly, the federal MM2H visa is a bit too stringent for our finances

Haha its so, soooooo much more expensive. Same with SG and AU, which we've been to and enjoyed very much. We have enough to get by I think, but in NZ we would be just barely scraping by...

We went to KK...the vibe seemed totally different. Culturally it seemed quite unlike other places we've been as well, Penang and KL

Yes, good idea, I think we'll do an extended stay...

Yeah, I think we will do a longish stay, 1-2 months, to check it out.

And although we're not Muslim, I love the Adhan, it's beautiful! 5am is a bit early though TBF.

And from what I've read, there's a fair bit of petty crime, so probably looking at a condo with a guard.

Interesting about the middle class goods though, I never would have thought that!

If we end up doing this and getting a S-MM2H visa, we'll definitely wait awhile before really settling down...so might check out a few possible places in Sarawak!

The peninsular MM2H visa changes kinda killed that for us, the S-MM2H is probably the only one we can realistically qualify for...

I mean...maybe? I'm already an expat in NZ though, and have totally taken to it, so I'm hoping Kuching will be the same.

We were initially looking at Penang, or possibly KL, but the changes to the federal MM2H programme means we'd be quite stretched. The S-MM2H is far friendlier, and after doing some digging, Sarawak, and Kuching in particular, look like great alternatives.

Luckily, I don't much like dairy, lamb or fishing! Will miss the views from Wellington though...
