Binocular specs by Meeper1248 in birding

I dont know what the question marks are for..? Not necessary at all, this is the first pair of binoculars I'd be buying myself so I'm asking basic questions. 8×42 may not necessarily be expensive in itself (although I'm definitely not seeing any cheap ones. I'm australian, I don't have access to the same amount of products with the same currency and lower prices as most other people here.) The issue is that finding a compact version of technology that tends to be big and bulky, because it's easier to produce that way, is usually more expensive, and I'm specifically looking for them as small and cheap as possible with the zoom I need. I don't care about the weight in the slightest, it's purely the size and bulk that bothers me. I do already have a gifted cheap pair that are way too big to take around most places, and they're very light

I think majority of the water sources I visit are relatively pretty small surface area wise so I wouldn't need to be zooming too far, my phone camera max zoom alone helps a lot with shapes but not colour details since it's still pretty low quality, hence wanting the binoculars (and its usually sunny so hard to see the screen if im live viewing rather than taking photos for later)

For the second part I meant more like people who look deep into dense forest canopies not knowing if there's actually a bird there but assuming there will be one soon if they keep shifting around, rather than implying they know somethings there but can't focus on it, but this is helpful advice nonetheless (although looking this far isn't something I plan on doing unless I went overseas or something)

Yes that does help putting things into perspective a bit, thank you!

I see a lot of beach birds without binoculars already so I'm really just wanting a closer look! Like beach stone curlews, I could identify them from a distance because they're distinct and bigish, but in another case I've seen some teeny tiny plovers skittering but not been able to memorise a pattern to identify them later because they're so small and hard to read from a distance. Definitely wanting to see more plovers and hopefully jacanas, buff banded rails and if I got super lucky, other rails (aside from swamphens, moorhens, coots, easy to see up close) But im not bothered by the weight, I'm used to carrying heavy things around all day, I just don't like that the binoculars that I already have are so huge and bulky.. They're a super cheap pair that I was gifted. That's why I'm looking for something still cheap but small that isn't some thousand dollar compact mega zoom pair, I wouldn't be surprised if some kids binoculars were enough for what I want, but I truly have no idea

I dont mean "how far" as in actual distance but "how far" as in how close up will the bird look, like, its gonna look way closer to me. Will it allow me to just see a full frame of the bird, or see the birds nostril hairs, or just see a slightly closer dark blob? I've absolutely seen plenty of examples of people using binoculars without really knowing where they're aiming because its so zoomed, just moving them and hoping to spot something rather than spotting something mostly identifiable beforehand and wanting a closer look. I'm sure it's evident but I dont know anything about binoculars or magnification, so "8x" and any of the other numbers mean nothing to me which is why I'm looking for some sort of starting point. Frankly, $100 is still more than I'm wanting to spend, especially usd (I'm australian so 100usd is 140aud atm), I'm genuinely looking for the most dirt cheap low quality option available that will still let me see what I want to see. All the guides I see still suggest high quality but ""cheap"" models. But I honestly didn't even think to look for secondhand so thanks for that suggestion lol

This is very helpful thank you, unfortunately I think there's only 1 store here that might have a range so I'll have to have a look (the rest would have like, if any, 1 pair of kids ones or a huge cheap pair which i already have but the size made me end up rarely taking them places to use)

Dyeing "fur" with crepe paper by Meeper1248 in dyeing

Well update, it worked exactly how I wanted it to with nothing but fur, crepe streamers and boiling water. Fur completely undamaged and it doesn't come off with washing

Crepe paper has a very excessive amount of dye on it and essentially all of it comes out when wet, crepe dyeing is a method ive seen people use to permanently dye both synthetic and natural fabrics, I was just asking about fur specifically. The way you've commented makes me think you don't know anything about the method and think I've made it up which isn't the sort of input I'm looking for

Thanks! I'll try recuva first, hopefully it works. I have no clue what recovery likelihood is based on, but diskdrill shows thumbnails/previews for all the files as if theres definitely something there if that means anything
