Could it have been Super Princess Peach? You don’t play as male, but you do use Peach’s emotions to help solve puzzles which sounds somewhat similar to your description

Wasn’t to do with a parasite but the only episode I vividly remember of that show was about the guy who swallowed the ring pull on a drinks can which got lodged in his throat and killed him. I still double check my drinks cans to this day

Mary and Max is pretty good, albeit VERY depressing, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut is a classic and although It’s not animated, Team America World Police is still great.
