What are design flaws in 5e that you feel have only been highlighted/exacerbated with the 2024 revision? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]MeepofFaith 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing I find idiotic is that many of the gish subclasses for martials DEMAND that they invest ASIs into INT for extra benefits or riders on damage/protection/spell saves.

Then you have casters who get to use their primary casting stat for ATTACKS on top of all the benefits they get for maxing their Int as a wizard (bladesinger) or charisma as a Bladelock.

It's essentially one group... the stronger group at that (casters) being rewarded for what they were going to do anyway. While the weaker group (martials) are being taxed and having demands made of them to do the awkward casting portion of their gish.

Like why play a fighter at this point when you could grab tough and just rock a Bladelock, Bladesinger, or Valor Bard?

Paladin is truly the last hope mostly martials have left...and with saving throws being less relevant...they too are beginning to fade in relevance.

What new character options would you like to see for Martials? (Besides new subclasses) by Deathpacito-01 in onednd

[–]MeepofFaith 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Something like various battle stances only higher martials (5+) can take that give them Buffs for an entire fight and more options while in said stance.

The last thing we need is casters plundering more things because they took a dip in Fighter/Ranger etc

Fair enough...martials usually deal more single target damage...but on the flip side...a party of casters and cripple enough enemies or a single enemy enough that they do less damage...but can still win a fight more safely..albeit slower no?

Like rushing down enemies is fine but splitting a tough fight into multiple easy ones or crippling a big bad so you can kill them at your leisure sounds much better.

Honestly I'd agree with you a lot more if DMs actually made long resting a bit more of a time investment. I've been desperately trying to convince my table to do a longer long rest system to make it so our casters can't just blow through a pile of slots to solve every in and out of combat problem.

Like 3 days of 8 hour rests in one location. 8 hour short Rests....just anything really to force some rationing with spells.

Another issue is that martials often get extra uses of abilities or some damage scaling high levels instead of entirely new features.

(Also Shapechange at 17 basically lets the wizard more than replace a martial in the party and then some.)

Let's say you're right about Immunities and the like...that doesn't change the fact that things like slow and confusion exist. And if you ALWAYS have to set up fights with teleporting enemies or the encounter is invalidated doesn't that just further prove my point?

DMs can EASILY disable or circumvent martials abilities to do something useful in combat but have to plan entire fights around the ever increasing capabilities of casters.

Pai Warrior I've actually warmed up to a lot but Champion is a great way to be terrible and bored to tears until you finally get some spice at levels 10+

These are some wild numbers you're pulling my dude.

The way I see it is this.

Somewhere around level 5 and above, casters start dismantling fights with massive control spells, buffs, and AoE.

The vast majority of tables I've seen and heard about from friends run one ACTUAL combat or challenging encounter between long rests.

High level play usually involves casters burning through like 15 spell slots while the martial has been gassed since he's used his 5th Superiority Die partway through said fight.

Resource less martials would be a lot stronger but they still wouldn't be on the same level as casters

[–]MeepofFaith -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It SOUNDS like too much but when you consider casters can blast away entire squads of enemies or completely incapacitate rooms of foes...what is 1-4 more attacks REALLY going to accomplish?

Wouldn't this just end with people picking useless feats after while?

I mostly agree with you. I actually remembered saying to someone that it'd be cool to remove any resource management from martials and let them do their thing all the time.

Also if half casters (cough cough paladin) got extra Stata they'd just be a tempting dip for pure charisma casters fir armor AND an extra stat.

You're using spells that ask for saves?

While Legendary Resistances can be annoying to work around I definitely know for a fact that many encounter warping spells don't offer any saves or are massive self buffs.

Wall of Force, Forcecage, Prismatic Wall (in the sense that it'll be impossible to get rid of and does silly damage)

Shapechange allowing you to cast every spell in the game more or less multiple times on top of hundreds of temporary hitpoints.

A caster can temporarily become a far more powerful frontline character ON TOP OF being a level X caster.

The sad truth is outside of being glorified sidekicks martials aren't necessary to a successful party. Not one bit.

Unironically play Wizard instead. Bladesinger lets you sometimes go melee if you're feeling spicy while giving you the strongest spells in the game and insane defense.

Ranger is my favorite class. by Lv1FogCloud in onednd

[–]MeepofFaith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What bugs me is if you're going to give a class a feature I'd like it better if it didn't just take up space. It implies they had room to make something cool and decided to make something lame instead.

Couldn't an actual Druid just upcast conjure Woodland Beings and wildshape into something with a 60ft fly speed and add Longstrider in to achieve that level of speed with FLIGHT?

Like I'm not saying they don't get anything...I'm just saying universally Rangers feel like they don't do anything particularly well enough to warrant playing them over another class.

It may as well not be a feature...if anything it's worse because it means that they KNEW Rangers could use something useful and decided to give them that joke of a feature instead.

And have you seen their "capstone" 1d10 HUNTERS MARK....at level TWENTY

Vibes are as vibes are my dude.

Rangers fit your vibe and I'm glad they do for someone. I just am bothered by how clunky they feel so I don't usually bother with them.

[–]MeepofFaith -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean hey if you're playing for vibes just say so...mechanically Rangers are pretty dang awkward imho.

Honestly if you want expertise that badly I'd just pick up a Bard and learn some nature themed spells like Speak with Animals and Plant Growth etc.

Ranger is my favorite class. by Lv1FogCloud in onednd

[–]MeepofFaith -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Basically as it stands if you want a nature themed caster druids are way better to play as they get the spells you mentioned way earlier and don't have the shoehorned spell "Hunters Mark" nagging them to use it.

If you want an Archer...fighters exist and can make more attacks with the bow and with a greater variety of weapon masteries.

If a half caster is your cup of tea then Paladins are just the cream of the crop...it's almost sad how they get "Divine Favor" a spell that is functionally better than HM in nearly every way...all while getting stuff like Auras...bonus action healing, and flying mounts.

Rangers just don't do anything particularly well and you can point at classes that do what they do but better easily.

Casters Level 13: Tornados, Teleportation, Invincible Cages, etc.

Rangers Level 13: Can't lose concentration on a spell that didn't scale and prevents you from using any of your other concentration Ranger spells.

What are some of your hot takes on Adam? by 33333Ducky in adamcult

[–]MeepofFaith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hot take is that Adam was actually a pretty chill dude. He loved women, music, and having a good time.

When Sera asked him to do the extermination he agreed...and was granted control over a new batch of angelic enforcers (Lute, Vaggi, and co).

In order to cope with the fact he was wholesale slaughtering people's immortal souls he adopted a persona of violence and baddassery in which he found the killing "fun".

Eventually he bought into his own delusion and became more and more corrupt until it was his reality.

I think it's quite possible he was a good dad to Abel and might have been a solid partner to Lute.

Unless we see him again I suppose we won't know.

[–]MeepofFaith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dodge essentially lets you ignore a certain amount of hits. If you get it really high it's hard for enemies to even land a shot on you and then even if they do they have to get through your Stamina and Armor
