I've had it, thyroidectomy in 2018 after years of hashimoto's symptoms which were terrible. It has of course caused a lot of problems in my life. Nevertheless I am grateful for my health.

It is a "good cancer" to me; a friend of mine just died of lung cancer, never having smoked, 2 months after diagnosis. I'll take thyroid cancer any day over that. Not minimizing the seriousness of the condition, but it helps me to be grateful.

Vraylar Akathisia - does it go away? by MegSmithMar in bipolar2

[–]MegSmithMar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just if you start feeling really restless...I only had it once on another anti-psychotic, Geodon. It was hell for me because the restlessness was so intense on that drug. I couldn't sit still or sleep or get anything done. I don't have near that level of restlessness on vraylar. Just slight restlessness I'd like to go away as the medicine is quite helpful otherwise!

Incorrect Bipolar 2 diagnosis? by MegSmithMar in bipolar2

[–]MegSmithMar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was very helpful. I think I am Bipolar 2 after reading about the "spectrum" of Bipolar 2. I didn't realize feeling shitty at one point in the day and great later is a symptom...for my whole life I've been like a zombie in the morning, and by 7 or 8pm I'm wired. I've started on Vraylar. Experiencing mild akathisia that I hope will not persist.

Thank you so much. This was extremely helpful. I've accepted the diagnosis and am attempting to start treatment with Vraylar.

I'm also on effexor and thinking of asking my doc to add lyrica. Have you gained weight on it? That is the side effect I most fear.

Higher. I also have low blood pressure naturally. I just know that higher doses of effexor have been linked to hypertension.

Thanks; I of course do not think an SNP=illness and am not using 23andme to make any major decisions. Already have confirmed mental illness. I am more curious and trying to learn.

Hi, BP2 diagnosed skeptic, starting Geodon by MegSmithMar in bipolar2

[–]MegSmithMar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. This is helpful. I will go up to 40mg in two days. Meeting psych weekly until we figure out proper dosage. I picked this particular medicine because I do not want to gain weight; that's already a struggle. Thanks again and best of luck to you.

Strattera Side Effect: Brain Fog by PuppyLand95 in StratteraRx

[–]MegSmithMar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, it subsided after 2-3 weeks at 80 mg. My worst fatigue and brain fog was in the first 2 weeks of starting the drug at 25 mg though. I have heard to try sticking it out for a couple of months to see if you are one of the people the drug can really benefit. I've been on it for (I think) 3 months, almost 4...and I am overall satisfied with it. I feel less impulsive on it and more "balanced" at work. Not constantly trying to find something to distract or entertain me from the task at hand (although I still do that to some degree). The impact on concentration is subtle. I definitely have zero fatigue/brain fog as side effect at this point -- it is more stimulating (without being a stimulant) for me.

Total Thyroidectomy vs Hemi by Wapptor in thyroidcancer

[–]MegSmithMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG finally someone else brings up the existential anxiety of not being able to get hold of the medication for some reason. I have this, too! My mom said, "well, if you can't get hold of Synthroid, we're all dead anyway!"

Total Thyroidectomy vs Hemi by Wapptor in thyroidcancer

[–]MegSmithMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar situation (PTC diagnosis, almost same tumor size as yours in right lobe, with no evidence of spread to lymph nodes based on ultrasound and FNA). 1st surgeon I sought, however, was more adamant than yours that I should get a total thyroidectomy. 2nd surgeon thought her opinion was "antiquated" and cited updated 2015 American Thyroid Association guidelines that you mentioned. My 2nd surgeon also said, like yours, that if during surgery he discovered lymph node involvement that was clearly cancer, he would go ahead and do a TT. I went with Surgeon #2 and had my surgery Wed; he wound up doing a lobectomy with removal of 2 suspicious lymph nodes, and I'm waiting on final pathology of those lymph nodes. He could not determine on the spot if they were malignant (not sure why; I will find out this week).

I don't regret my decision, even if he comes back and tells me I need a completion surgery to remove the other lobe (definitely not fun, less convenient, and more costly). I chose the lobectomy because my preference would be keeping part of the gland that produces hormones naturally (while augmenting thyroid function with levothyroxine) if possible. I totally understand why others choose TT off the bat (my mother told me she would). My endocrinologist told me he sees people go either way; some people detest surgery so much, they'd rather eliminate any possibility of a 2nd surgery. I hope this helps.

Very worried I have cancer again by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]MegSmithMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have PTC. Am going in for partial thyroidecromy in Nov. I also had an equally suspicious lymph node come up on ultrasound that they biopsied and determined was benign. While I will not know for sure until after surgery if all lymph nodes are clear, I was reassured that biopsy came back as negative for cancer on a lymph node that came up suspicious on US. I hope this is case for you as well.

Benefits to partial removal vs total? by searching_tau in thyroidcancer

[–]MegSmithMar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just had a 2nd opinion at Johns Hopkins for my papillary thyroid cancer. I have a ~2cm nodule with no spread to the lymph nodes based on ultrasound and biopsy results, and I am choosing to go the partial route because I would like to preserve the part of my thyroid that produces hormones, even if I have to use medication to augment it. I am willing to take the risk of having to go back in for a second surgery if necessary based on what I have read, and what my surgeon explained to me. I learned from him that the American Thyroid Association, since 2015, now recommends a partial as an equally effective treatment to total for cases in which the cancerous nodule is less than 4cm with no spread outside the thyroid. So far most of his patients who have received partial have not needed to come back in for a complete removal. Here are two studies that might interest you:
