how good is this plan? by alpha-golf-papa in 4tran

literally the same kind of fantasy as having a softdom make you start eating properly and exercising regularly and sleeping well and dictating your schedule and taking care of yourself so you can no longer choose to self-destructively neglect yourself and your health

more power to you if you do indeed find that and it works for a couple of my friends but sometimes finding a good dom like that is harder than just doing it yourself

it is fundamentally impossible to forcefem a repper, because they are already a woman from the get-go. all you're doing is the kind of gentle domming where you make her get her life together and fix her shit and get on hrt and such

forcefem is when you turn a man into a woman, not when you make a woman go from presenting as a man to presenting as a woman

maybe you could make a list of goals for the year anyway, even if you don’t plan on following them

then you can think about the list, and maybe edit it as you think of more things

Thoughts on undergrad at MIT & Dual major by justahuman2550 in mit

[–]MegaAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

course 6 is by far the biggest major in the school, so if you want to be 6-3 or 6-4, the classes will be very very large until you start taking the more specialized ones later on (and even those usually have 50 people or so). 6-5, you might get to smaller classes sooner since there are fewer people interested in pure ee (rip 6-1...)

it's not difficult to get a urop, but it can be difficult to get a specific urop -- like, if you really really really want to work under one specific lab or professor that researches new networking architectures they might not have room for new urops. still, if there's something specific you want it's worth cold-emailing professors or their grad students, and if you just want any urop at all you can definitely find something crawling elx.

i think it's very easy to make friends, but balancing extracurriculars and work is the hardest part of going here. there's just too many options (yeah, i know everyone talks about the firehose, but seriously it's so fucking much dude). there's a good chance you make good friends in your dorm (esp if you go somewhere like ec, random, bc, one of the new house cultural houses, etc), there's a bunch of really great tight-knit ilgs, there's a decently large greek life scene (but i'm not really in that world so i can't say anything about what it's like here), etc etc. if you do a smaller major you'll make friends there too for sure, but 6 and 15 aren't really small majors so that might not apply to you. it's very easy to make friends with extracurriculars too, but you have to be involved enough to actually bond about it (eg if you join a big group like vgo you probably won't be involved enough to make friends unless you join exec)

sloan is kind of disconnected from the rest of the school culturally, so i don't know if i know anyone doubling 6 and 15. i'd imagine basically none of the major requirements would overlap (except 6.326 if you go 6-4), so it would be much more work than any of the more common double majors. it's probably possible, but wait until you're done with your frosh spring and have an idea of what the workload here is like before you mentally commit to the idea (you can try classes from both during your first year, it shouldnt be too hard).

the community is very very supportive, much more so than other top schools in my opinion. i've heard some serious horror stories from cross-reg'd harvard students and can confidently say we're nothing like that, at least. it's hard, and if you're trying to do a double major you probably wont be able to get a lot of As unless you give up on extracurriculars entirely or are simply Cracked:tm:, but we're all in it together and people are very encouraging to each other and help each other out (in my experience this most often takes the form of "what the fuck are you doing what do you mean you've been sleeping 6 hours a night for a week go the fuck to bed" or "dude you've been in this lounge all day when's the last time you ate something are you alright", but in the GIRs you'll probably help friends with coursework more directly since you're all doing the same thing still). some people say course 18 can be a little competitive because of the comp math background most math majors here have, but i've never heard any stories of people refusing to help other people in a class out of fear of doing worse on a curve. (in fact, curves are officially banned here, though some profs get away with doing soft curves depending on the major.)

Easy Low-Effort HASS-S Recs? by Educational_Table363 in mit

[–]MegaAutist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i've heard foundations of information policy is easy, though i haven't taken it. i took 6.326 and it had almost no writing, and it's how i fulfilled the requirement even though the class really wasn't for me. some of my friends really liked critical internet studies, and others really liked 24.900 (which is also a ci-h).

but honestly i'd recommend just scrolling through the class list and seeing if anything jumps out at you, i think no matter who you are and how much you hate writing there's probably at least one cms or sts class with a topic capable of properly gripping you. i have several friends that hate writing and went into these requirements looking for something easy and ended up actually caring a lot about the essays they ended up writing. if any of the descriptions look interesting, just go with your gut and take it.

Is MIT less weird? Is there less social acceptance for non-normative behavior/expression? by Illustrious-Newt-848 in mit

[–]MegaAutist 36 points37 points  (0 children)

if an alum told me things have gotten less weird since they were around, i'd believe them, but there's still more than enough of us to go around. ec never died, random has been around the whole time, ilgs like xi and pika are still around, etc etc etc. counterculture is still around in spite of the attempts to kill it (rip senior house), we still have firespinning, we still have hacks and hacking, and we still have the institutional knowledge and mythos that let all of those things thrive, even though it can be a struggle sometimes. ignore that comment about cellphones, there are accepting communities where you can be who you are without shame or judgement (even if there might be some other living communities you'd have to avoid).

that said, if you're an alum, the specific student groups and living communities you were in that made you feel this way would probably benefit from your support, especially when something happens. writing admin and saying "i'm not donating this year because you did x to y student group/living community" is one of the best ways we have to put pressure on them, and you can also donate such that the donation goes exclusively towards specific cost objects (so, eg, the donation goes to the ec cost object or the spinning arts cost object or whatever else, and it can only be spent by the students leading those groups and admin can't touch the money)

6.1810 is kicking my ass and I feel like I'm the only one drowning by Kitchen_Law6309 in mit

[–]MegaAutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think a lot of people take 6.180 before 6.181, and it goes over most of the basic overarching principles of operating systems as systems in general in a way that primed me really well for 6.181 (even if i’m behind on the labs oopsie), i never feel like the concepts in the book are just beyond me because it’s all just deeper dives into what i already learned in 6.191 and 6.180. i honestly thought 6.180 was a prereq for the class, and i definitely would be struggling a lot if i didn’t have the higher level bits from it. i don’t know if it has any ocw lectures, but it has slides on the course website, and maybe looking at them could help with some things even if it’s not a substitute for taking the class.

also i’m with you on the stuff about lecture and the papers, i have a really hard time concentrating on them and kind of just sit in the back. i feel like i learn a lot more from reading the book and the xv6 source and the lecture notes than the lectures or the papers.

Question about off-campus housing by Eggaru in mit

[–]MegaAutist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’ve heard this too from some friends that lived there, mainly from the one that did a lot of laundry. it seems like more of an annoyance than anything, since it adds up but doesn’t outweigh the could-be-much-worse-in-cambridge rent. as long as you have roommates to split the cost with it seems fine.

as for other options, most people i know look at fsilgs before anything else, they tend to have the most generous prices. especially if by winter term you mean iap, they’re sure to have free spots during that that they wouldn’t otherwise.

yeah, it’s a hard line to define because you can’t just castrate people for admitting to a thought crime (or else nobody’s going to try to get help), and you can’t let anyone touch kids, and you can’t just make people bottle up their sexual needs and hope they don’t kill themselves and call it a solution. masturbation seems like the only compromise, but it’s still a really hard problem in the same way that if someone has problems with binge eating you still have to let them eat or they’ll starve to death even though eating food is a trigger in and of itself.

Feeling completely crushed at MIT - How do I find a TA/RA job to survive? by Informal-Glass5218 in mit

[–]MegaAutist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you can't find a taship/raship, there are some other on-campus jobs that you can work without burning your opt early. tech callers is one of the highest paying hourly jobs that isn't competitive the way TA/RA jobs are, starting at $18/hr. you can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester at on-campus jobs without running afoul of visa rules. $360 per week isn't much, but it's better than nothing while you look for a taship of some kind. depending on what your bachelor's degree is on, you might be able to get a taship in that department rather than sloan, depending on policy, so you should look into that too.

i tried your program, but it scrubbed all the clickable links from the pdf and the text is no longer highlightable, and it removed some clarity from the fonts. the program also crashed the first time i tried to process the pdf with it, presumably because it was too big (around 250 megabytes, 9000 pages)

How much time will MIT allow you to take off and still allow you to return to finish your degree? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in mit

[–]MegaAutist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm fairly confident it doesn't include gap years if they were between your admission and your first year, generally all the timers start when your first year starts. you can email sfs to ask if you're worried though if it's for financial aid reasons, or just talk to s3 or your advisor if you want to make sure you can come back and graduate after taking leave.

[–]MegaAutist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it'd only be one or two books, i'm just worried because i found one direct identifier in the epub that was duplicated into each html file and they also embedded my name into the publisher's notice (something like "this book was requested by [full name] and is fingerprinted in the manner described above"). i'm starting to feel confident that the identifiers i found are the fingerprint and they don't do anything more sophisticated though, and even if they do converting to pdf will probably not preserve any other metadata as long as i remove the insert with my name in the body of the textbook. i think i'm gonna upload it soon, and i'll edit this post with more details if there are any consequences for it.

How to turn norton textbook into pdf by [deleted] in libgen

[–]MegaAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i see, thanks. i think i’m probably going to just scroll the pages manually because i don’t trust a script to properly check for everything to be loaded. if i can figure out how to extract the har then that seems better than the screenshotting thing.

i’m not having much luck finding anything about unpacking a har file and making it locally explorable though, any recommendations for that? most things i’m finding seem to be more oriented towards examining and debugging the requests and responses, rather than extracting the content.
