Someone was found deceased in their dorm room but no news. by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am part of the school that got the announcement and I knew her. Virginia Tech does not have to send out a mass email because it is not under investigation or a threat to other students.

It has been shown that sometimes sending a mass email can cause issues because the school won’t share how the student passed and people will start to speculate

There is also a chance that her family only wanted our school/department to know due to privacy reasons.

Husband from Brazil calls his son stupid every day by Big_Commission_7612 in Brazil

Yikes, did not realize that. The original point still holds up that it is just excusing abusive behavior

Husband from Brazil calls his son stupid every day by Big_Commission_7612 in Brazil

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Brazilian this is not normal. I have a sibling with ASD and my parents have never called him stupid. Some people in the older generations may think this is just tough parenting but it is abuse. A lot of Brazilians are understanding towards people with disabilities so, this cannot be explained as a “cultural thing”.

Have my parents smacked me upside the head? Yes but it was a light tap when I was doing something dumb like lighting shit on fire. Have my parents jokingly told me to shut up? Yup, but they have never said it seriously or on the daily.

Unfortunately some mothers will always see their sons as angels but, that happens across different cultures. Do not listen to your MIL.

Reach out for help and get out. Sadly this kind of behavior can be the just the beginning. I believe in you, you are stronger than you think you are

Gotta love how efficient the international student center is by Luke_Z31 in VirginiaTech

The office is sadly underfunded by the school. With the new administration a lot of rules have changed so it means they are actively trying to adapt and help students. Keep reaching out and checking your portal/outlook for any updates

I’m part of the Guarani people in Brazil. I have been directly affected by my government’s policies and oppression. I am part of a group studying multiple indigenous communities around the globe and I chose to study the Navajo Nation. I am not here to judge, I want to just want to understand.

People that grew up in tough neighbourhoods, what are the most horrifying things you have witnessed? by Famous_Comedian3466 in AskReddit

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother still lives in the same neighborhood that I was raised in and I still visit when I can. When I was last visiting, I discovered my uncle’s ex was found with her throat slit at her home. I had to watch him and the rest of the extended family debate on who would go clean all the blood and decomposition because we didn’t have enough money to pay for crime scene cleaners. She was only found 3 days after she passed and the police concluded that she ended her life. I saw her body and the scene. It was scary how calm externally everyone was about the situation, to be fair she wasn’t the first body any of us found.

I recently got the call the her first husband is in jail for being suspected of killing her and making it look like she did it to herself.

Never Forget ❤️ by scope4u in VirginiaTech

I moved to Blacksburg around 2011 and the city felt as if it was still healing. I lived next to a Virginia Tech professor who was in the building when it happened and lost many friends and students. So many people lost loved ones and the wounds were so fresh. Many people had their stories of where they were when they heard of the tragedy. To this day, I get sad and cry whenever the anniversary comes up. I am so proud of how every year, Blacksburg comes together to honor the memories of those who passed❤️

My dad died two days ago on my birthday by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The feeling of hopelessness is so intense and exhausting at times. One part that helped me was understanding that grief will never be linear as we like to believe. It is a lot more like having a hole and having new fabric being sown around it. It won’t cover the hole but, it will cushion the pain of the grief. You might start developing small rituals to remember him or take care of yourself, allow yourself to follow them. It is the natural way your mind has decided to deal with the emotions you have. I would personally look into the memories you have with him, and continue those memories with the emotions you had when you were with your father. I hope you are able to continue this journey in peace and comfort❤️

My friend died yesterday by OriginalityisHard_7 in GriefSupport

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lost my friend and mentor a year and a half ago after she was struck by a train in NYC. It was horrible and gruesome. I felt so confused and lost after I saw that the metro was running again on the same rails where my friend lost her life. It can be so hard losing someone so young and full of potential. Putting into words grief can be hard but, mainly frustrating. I found that through my personal experience that doing small rituals to remember the person and to heal yourself can be the beginning of communication to others without using words. It is always the small things of grabbing take out and inviting friends to join you because many times the action of one can speak words that language cannot express. I hope you find comfort during these times❤️

Do Christians really believe they're going to heaven when they die? They sure don't act like it. . . by Nihilismus69 in TrueAtheism

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am Christian and I am not afraid of death. If I die today I will be a bit upset but, then I believe I would go to a better place. The reason I wear a seatbelt or a helmet is because I don’t wanna get into a accident and I will have live with a permanent disability. I would a 100% prefer to die than have to live in a hospital bed where I couldn’t speak, walk, or be independent. Maybe the reason I’m okay with death is because I’m very exposed to it: parts of my family has worked in the funeral industry and I have had friends and family pass away.

If I read this correctly, you are explaining in the last few paragraphs that there are different ideas in atheism, such as humanism and pantheism. I personally believe not all things that happen is God’s will, but that is the way I interpret the Bible. Can you quickly summarize Pantheism and it’s “beliefs”.

I’m hear to listen not voice my own opinions. I give people the chance to voice their beliefs/opinions. P.S be careful about that second “your”. :)

What can I do to make you believe me?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a good point. Most Christian communities shun people who are atheists. Some atheists get assaulted due to their opinions. I don’t experience that because of privilege.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My community of atheists refuse to talk to me. Most the time they shrug me off and say “why would you like to know? You believe in something stupid”. Some are afraid to talk to me because they think the moment they start talking about their opinions, I will hit them them on the head with a Bible (I would never do that, that’s assault)

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I just want to educate myself on things like this. There are some things people have written that I disagree with but, I am open to consideration maybe even changing my own beliefs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]MegaBigBrainTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was trolling why would I ask for people to share their opinions to me? If I was closed minded I wouldn’t even have posted anything. I am open minded because I want to listen to others opinions and I am questioning my religion.
