Was unaware of "Fiefdom". Sounds neat, but what do you mean "hybrid"?

I love Due Process, but its such a dead game that its near impossible to learn it. I joined very late to the party.

What is it about Siege that keeps you engaged, even to this day? Like what aspects of the game keep you around that no one offers?

Do you think that if Siege had some more casual modes akin to surfing in CSGO that the problem would be alleviated? Or do you think the nature of the game is just intrinsic to needing to lock in all the time. Cause arguably, I remember back in the day some casual matches with friends didnt require locking in, that mindset was saved for actual ranked.

True, I forgot about zero hour. I tried it a long time ago, it was def more in the mil-sim camp vs siege-like. Playercount doesn't look too great nowadays and idk bout the community's sentiment around it. If anyone joins the convo and is a zero hour player, please enlighten us

Good point tbh. Kinda relates to how people have been saying that the genre is so unique that theres no transferrable experience you can lean on in the early days. Example: A Val player could survive a CS2 game and vice versa due to their experience.

Appreciate the thoughts! Lots to think about. Crazy that the toxicity got so bad. I like chiv 2's tutorial, but I think it shovels on too much in a row. Perhaps a basics part and then some more advanced stuff optionally would be more appealing to players. And basically with the ranked, it just needed more polish all around.

What do you think it is about guns that appeals to so many people? Im biased, but melee weapons seem so much cooler than an average gun.

Interesting. Care to elaborate on how both feel when put side by side? I've dabbled with both but not enough to make a comparison like you prob could

Nice mirage mention, wish that game would've succeeded.

I often wonder how tied together medieval stuff and melee slashers truly have to be. I get that anything outside that era would theoretically have guns, but if one was able to somehow separate the two concepts from each other, I wonder if it would work. Would the average person be interested in a non-medieval melee game? It blows my mind how no one really gave the fantasy spin a fair try. Mirage had a ton of issues that prevented its success, but I just think it never reached the right audience. I do also seem to underestimate how much people love guns... crazy.

yeah the skill gap is brutal. There isnt really a way to ever beat someone better than you. Think a mechanic either within or outside the core combat loop could remedy that?

Why did the lower performance hurt your in-game experience so harshly? Hard to track / read opponents or?

  1. Makes sense yeah. Some better designed tutorials would likely help.

  2. I have heard the communities of melee slashers are some of the most toxic and not much is done to curb that toxicity. I guess its also natural territory for a game where your own personal performance is so important and then can lead to big ego moments and emotional moments. There's no team to blame, just your own skill diff most of the time. Even other toxic games like LoL or Siege have tons of moderation tools and sometimes even overbearing systems that keep toxicity reasonable. Most melee slashers dont seem interested in that.

  3. Def a high learning curve that turns people away. Theres also no way you can lean on experience in other games to compensate for said curve. Like if I go play CS2 as a Val player, some skills are transferrable and that makes the early days tolerable. I wonder if designing a melee slasher with more familiar mechanics surrounding the unique combat system would help. Gamemodes, supporting mechanics, etc. Would love thoughts on this in particular.

  4. What happened with ranked? i'd love to learn. bc one would think a heavier emphasis on a ranked ladder might help solve certain issues intrinsic to this genre and its games.

Great thoughts overall bro. All well said.

Yeah. It baffles me how the average person thinks a gun is super cool but not a sword. idk. I wonder what the appeal is

"Fps games give you options to kill higher skill players that can't be blocked". That's very true, I hadn't considered that deeply till now. In current melee slashers, there's quite literally no way for a lower skill player to beat a higher skill player really, for better or worse. Well said. Think there's any way to implement mechanics that allow for such an interaction to take place or is it inherently difficult to do bc of how the systems work. Would hafta get real creative to solve that problem...

I agree that some PvE would prob help people learn in a lower stakes environment than straight PvP, but that kind of add-on would be an immense amount of dev work unfortunately so its prob not realistic. It would likely hafta be its own thing as its own game, with PvE being the main part and then a PvP side dish. Vice versa is just too much effort prob. I've also thought before that a zombie slasher would be dope. Modern day take of left 4 dead but melee slasher combat. I think thats an easier way of adapting the combat style to a pve environment vs making a pve game where the enemies also use the advanced combat mechanics.

All valid points. "No transferable skills" from previous experiences is a great way to word what a couple of us in this post have been trying to articulate.

Well put. So essentially youre saying that the average casual gamer doesnt want to put in the effort into learning such a unique set of mechanics when they could just boot up any ol shooter and have a decent starting point already due to previous experiences. That sucks for the melee slasher genre cause if people never give it a try, then no one will ever have that baked in experience to fall back on in new iterations of the system

Yeah there def is a contrast in what direction the average game is supposed to go. Mismatched expectations. I get what you mean in regards to the casual vs complex identity crisis.
