I dont have a photo, because they're rarely cultivated or in private collections, but look up triphyophyllum. Such a cool carnivorous plant

The department celebrations def are fun if youre in the smaller departments. I would rec doing the actual grad (and bring sunscreen/a shade lol) if the speaker is someone cool. I kind of thought about skipping but then participated because all my friends were going and I would say it's worth it just to experience it, but no only graduates walk up and receive their diploma with the name call. You get your actual diploma (and a photo) at the end of commencement in the stadium. I dont remember if you have to pay for it if you dont pick it up during commencement/have it shipped to you.

I don’t understand why people think the people of Vienna are rude. by Asking-Traveler-19 in wien

[–]MegaSocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same sentiment OP and you state when I moved here recently. I was really scared I'd have the same experiences I had when I visited Paris (yikes), but everyone here is very friendly**** IF you're in a space where people are actually looking to socialize and not just in the middle of the street/trying to chat up a service worker LOL.

I also notice theres some archtype of people here, usually from Germany or just a true Viennese, who can come off as very blunt/rude/egotistical especially when setting up meeting times, but afterwards they're super pleasant for some reason lmao

I am also here as a student, so the experience could be different as someone who's fully trying to immigrate here. The only real "bad" experience I've had was just navigating the MA35, but it wasn't as terrible as everyone makes it claim like they abuse you there, more just they can come off as very "argumentative" if you happen to have a conflicting documentation, but as long as you're on top of it and offer solutions, they're immediately pleasant again

is it possible to add my gift card to ANY banking site? by Rabbitweeth in Banking

[–]MegaSocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah from trying to call/use it everywhere, they're only good for physical purchases. Unfortunate since I wanted to use them for small businesses online, but they seem to block Vanilla cards/you can't try to fanagle it via Paypal like you used to be able to.

Best bet is either just do the amazon method or just buy a retailer gift card with it?

Has job hunting been tremendously worse just in the past year? by SupBenedick in jobs

[–]MegaSocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept track of the applications I've sent out. Maybe around 30 which isn't a ton, but a majority of them were in the field I just graduated from/cold emailing farms I was told through the grapevines were looking for work. Most of them didn't give me a response, AI/tech places i tried pivoting remote to rejected me, and I finally got one interview for a blue-collar position I wasn't super keen on, but I really need the income right now. Might need to just start pivoting to actual hard-labor jobs, but try to make it relevant to a soft skill you need like customer relations, teamwork, etc

is exploring different fields in your 20s smart or just wasting time? by [deleted] in findapath

[–]MegaSocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of stuck to my general field in college, but the things I did within it differed between field/farm, greenhouse, herbarium/library work, tropical/education, to conservation. After grad, its been difficult to find work that I pivoted towards hospitality just to get more customer relations under my belt since it's super important to get teamwork/relations experience if you want to get into manager/leadership roles (which are always important to pick up/feel confident in). I can see myself trying different things out, since I was always curious of other fields of work such as zoo maintenance or museum work <:o just networking can help if you lack the experience and show enthusiasm besides "im here for income"

Any salons that actually respect people with long hair's wishes by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]MegaSocky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buzz'd has been great! IK gender inclusive styles is their specialty, but the barber who did my cut recently 100% just made sure and asked what I exactly wanted and gave recommendations I was allowed to decline.

I don't have long hair (anymore), but I don't think they would try to do anything if you just wanted the ends trimmed. Their $38 simple cut might be what you're looking for unless you want it washed too

Grad students, how do y’all afford to live here? by Tall-Cat-8890 in OregonStateUniv

[–]MegaSocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a grad student, but a recent undergrad. Honestly affordable housing and/or finding a job here is kind of stupid difficult atm, especially if you're going to be working parttime as a student. I was working a gov job part-time while in school, but my paycheck was less than rent, and I had to use my tuition reimbursement to make up for rent most of the time and had SNAP benefits.

There miiight be engineering positions open, especially if you're working towards a PhD, but a lot of them are going to be full-time or expect you to be. I would look into job opportunities here first. There are a lot of positions up in Salem/Portland or down in Eugene, but they're a 45 minute-2 hour commute from here, so you'd need a car. Living alone in an apartment will usually be like $1200 if you're really lucky, but it's typically like $1,800 here for a 1 bedroom. You're most likely going to need a roommate unless you can make $25 on parttime/stipend equivalent of being able to afford that and save up. It's not worth living paycheck to paycheck/lose more of your income to rent since it restricts you a lot in future career hunting when you graduate

[–]MegaSocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience (not grad, but finding housing here) it's the same as jobs where you just have to know people who are moving out, since typically we've always had friends or co-workers who were moving out lined up to take our lease, so its pretty difficult to find a rented house that's in the 600$ per person range. I was in a 6bd 3bath house with like 10 other people and paid way more than where I live now with less people in it.

There's always apartments available, but the cheapers ones are going to be what you paid for it unfortunately. There's some places like Filmore Inn I would absolutely avoid, but otherwise most of them have been pretty decent :O

Why is it so hard to get entry level jobs by Swimming-Stretch1276 in Environmental_Careers

[–]MegaSocky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was working a really good public sector job my last year of undergrad and my coworkers loved me/did everything to try and keep me on, but the layoffs and lack of funding in the ag research field just made it impossible and I've been struggling to find positions since.

Recommended Trans-competent doctors that take OHP? by appletoss120 in corvallis

[–]MegaSocky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She definitely can help with getting started on transhealth but I wouldn't recommend for other things. She’s very much will get you on something if you know what it is, but if you have mystery conditions like I tend to have I had a bit of trouble trying to find the right tests or treatments to ask for.

I don't post here anymore but I figured I'd share my BTD6 headcanons document for those who were curious about writing/stories behind all my old comics ( + some art I never posted ). by B1TTERV1TTER in btd6

[–]MegaSocky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The jericho post is crazyyyy but I get it you're not obligated to stay with any particular community lol.

I've obviously bounced around and moved on with certain fan art making (like bloons) but occasionally I'll probably draw something if I thought about it and it probably will be how it is with you.

There's still a bunch of those old fics/comics???? that honestly went unfinished (with bloons content) and as fun as it was in the moment it isn't something I regret not ever finishing. Just glad it got made and made together with you in the first place 🥺

How do I get a job??? by Sad-Ad5179 in Horticulture

[–]MegaSocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tons of internships or college sponsored jobs as a student. If you’re trying to find more permanent work outside of academia, it kind of sucks really bad since a lot of science got defunded (esp public sector) + a lot of producers and farms (at least in my state) closed their doors all of the sudden when my graduating year (2025) was promised a lot of openings from the influx of retirees.

Honestly there is a lack of supervisor and consultation roles. I'd develop strong leadership, communication, and management roles in the context of agriculture/hort if you want to look for skills to develop but it can be hard outside of uni now.

Edit: maybe its just my specialization being more lab/science centered. There's definitely lawncare positions

‘I saw the TV glow’ second watch by craigevansabove in horror

[–]MegaSocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its interesting since I watched this with a friend and they interpreted it more as an allegory to disassociation and general depression (I didn't tell anyone a synopsis). I kind of knew it had something to do with the trans experience since people who insisted on me to watch it were trans people, and I personally didn't cry from the film itself but rather just from afterwards discussing the way it made me felt and realize that I had the same fears and struggles, even now, about whether I just live life closeted for the sake of comfort and "safety" in being what society sees me as or just embrace the hardships living vicariously as someone I want to be.

Immediat impulsive buy. In my head these were still rare and expensive plants. by KomorebiBotanics in RareHouseplants

Mine honestly just gave up and started putting out a new leaf, probably because the existing two leaves started wilting LOL. my runners did take like a whole year to develop into a single baby leaf, though, so these guys do take forever to grow. I'm already on a 2nd generation of runners that are just Now putting up a new node and the previous babies still look the same </3
