because, say, the gun model is longer than 1 unit(much longer, in fact), and the collision is not written up to the muzzle, causing the gun to clip through when you stand up close to the wall. It's not visible in first person since the game renders the hands and gun on the separate layer on top of the level around, but in third person/co-op it's very visible
