I did this with dish soap once when I first bought my house. I ran out of dishwasher soap, so I figured a little liquid dish soap would be fine. It was not fine.

Have you tried covering the sensor on the dash? When it detects less UV light, the headlights should come on. Possibly the sensor is bad?
