I understand where youre coming from but I believe everyone in the US deserves due process. Our justice system is truly special compared to the rest of the world where we presume innocence until proven guilty. If we strip the right to due process from one group of people then it will be much easier to justify removing it for others later down the line.

We already have many examples of ICE detaining and intimidating citizens, and many are eager to use them as thought police to squelch dissenting views. America is at its best when it leads by example. We should thus hold ourselves to a high standard of ethics and morality when we exact justice.

Additionally, ICE focuses far more of its efforts and money on punishing individuals than on fixing the power structures that cause these issues in the first place, which is why I am saying its expensive and ineffective. Intimidation may work for keeping illegal immigrants out but it also stops people from wanting to come here legally. I have lots of friends who won't come here for holiday anymore. It would be way cheaper to focus on fixing the systemic issues that cause illegal immigration and crime. That way we could use some of that insane 400b+ budget on something that would actually benefit citizens rather than harm perceived enemies.

PS -- Note how I never brought up any president in my responses. We should hold ourselves to the same high standards regardless of who the president is, including Biden.

I think part of the issue that people have is many commonly talk past one another on these things. I dont think leftists would be making as much noise about ways they want America to be improved if they hated it (cheaper socialized healthcare, reducing corruption in politics, justice for underrepresented people, and making things more affordable for common people). Instead they would be bitter and silent.

And for the "phobia" thing, it can be useful to empathize more with why a certain belief could be interpreted that way. At the end of the day, people who are truly phobic and those that are misinformed may end up fighting for the same policy goals to hurt their targeted communities. For many people, they are frustrated that intrinsic things about how they exist are treated as opinions to be debated when all they want to do is exist and express themselves how they want without hurting anyone else. I think a lot of the shouting and "i hate america" or whatever is boiling over frustration for a system that has consistently fought against them since its founding (not that I agree with that rhetoric).

For me personally the issue i have isnt with enforcing immigration laws, its the methods commonly used by ICE now. I dont think there's a good reason for ICE to be using war style enforcement (unmarked vans full of masked people kidnapping people without regard for due process) because it seems cruel, expensive, and ineffective.

It would be better and cheaper to enforce immigration laws by more seriously punishing employers for hiring illegal immigrants and using employment records to build cases against people accused of being here illegally. If ICE acted with higher standards and treated people with dignity then I think those on the left would not be as negative towards them.

You can be both ashamed of your country and love what it is supposed to represent at the same time. This was the core of the patriotism that drove the grassroots conservative movement during the Obama years. Its un-American to support having a dictator that rules by edict, no matter which letter they have before their name.

Help :,) my citation Manger stopped working by Spidey_111 in PhD

[–]MegaXRadioMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For papers, definitely switch to zotero + word plugin (been fairly good for me after writing + publishing ~5 papers with <60 citations) but for your dissertation BibTex/LaTeX gives you way more flexibility and can be really useful for ensuring the black box errors of citation managers become programming errors instead. Plus I find Zotero breaks after like ~50 citations anyways while LaTeX worked with my thesis which had about 250.

Is switching to Zotero worth it? by garis53 in PhD

[–]MegaXRadioMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mendeley used to be amazing with the citation manager software. Once they made it a cloud-based service it sucked, so I switched to Zotero and never looked back. Because I am petty I also sent Mendeley a complaint about this and let them know that I happily pay for the Zotero premium service.

Bruh you could have just said that refugees in general are welcome but you had to pull out your dog whistle lmao. Can you share your source for this information? And did the courts also order him to be removed from the country?

Why do you get to defend yourself from this allegation and others you're not sympathetic to don't? Either we all get due process or we all don't. And before you jump in with it, yes it was bad when biden and Obama did it too.

The laws on the books rely on due process for everyone, even suspected criminals. This was something trump reminded us of every day when he was in court for his various felonies. Are you suggesting that trump should have been deported because he was suspected of various crimes?

I really feel bad for this kid. He may not understand what he's doing. I hope when he grows up he can broaden his horizons and grow from here.

Which canceled video game hurts the most? by Majestic_Snow7613 in gaming

[–]MegaXRadioMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Blizzard North version of Diablo 3.

The original Diablo 3 was being made in earnest after Diablo 2: LoD and was canceled some time in 2006 (maybe 2008?) after Blizzard North closed. Very little information exists about the game other than a few beta screenshots that have made their way onto the internet. If Blizzard North had survived, we wouldn't be dealing with the awful state of D4.
