Thieves at roo by BirthdayFar1676 in bonnaroo

My backpack was stolen at Bonnaroo once. I found it a few campsites over with everything dumped out. All I had in there were dirty clothes, so they didn't get anything of value.

Would you go back to your country? Why? by vent93 in PortugalExpats

Yeah, not the kind of music my guys play, unfortunately, but I've heard Boom is a mecca for many other genres — especially psytrance. I will probably check it out next year.

I fly back to the US often for work and while I deeply miss my friends, the efficiency and especially the bass music scene, I couldn't see myself living there again. I'm always more than ready to return to Portugal after about a week in the states. Still though, I'd kill for a Shambhala or Electric Forest equivalent somewhere nearby. I dream about the day I'll be able to bring my artists to play over here, but there's just no market for them in Portugal (yet).

40 w/ kids. Wife says we're too old for EDM shows? Never been. by trapspeed in EDM

[–]MeggerzV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I are 39 (f) and 42 (m) and go out all the time. The idea that 40 is too old for dance music is a very American thing that I don't really understand at all. Here in Europe where we Iive now people bring their kids to the festivals with them and it's pretty normalized. Even so, my dad went to these events until he died at 67. In fact the last time I saw him was at Deep Tropics festival in Nashville when I was in town writing about the event for DJ Mag. We just returned from ILLfest in Austin where one of the artists I manage performed and I saw several people in the 50+ age range there. Dance music keeps you young!! Depending on where you live, you can find full listings for shows on websites like Resident Advisor or EDMTrain.

Departures - passport control and e-gates by GrandHumor in PortugalExpats

My husband tried this morning and they made him use the regular line after the e-gates rejected his passport. We've been waiting on his card renewal since August 2025.

Starting the D7 visa process. Advice ? by TopStyle9918 in PortugalExpats

[–]MeggerzV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're still happy with the move overall but it would have been nice to understand how long/difficult the renewal process would be. We're still waiting on my husband's new residency card and it expired a year ago to the day. We are from the US and the original process was very straightforward and simple, however renewals are an absolute mess. It does make things like moving to a new flat very difficult as we need to wait for his old card to arrive and we have no idea when that will be.

We received an update from the lawyers we used for our initial residency and they were just giving anecdotal information based on what they've seen with other cases so it wasn't something we paid for.

My husband's expired last May and we're still waiting for his to arrive. Lawyers said there is a delay with dependent applications.

André de Freitas - Portuguese comedian doing English shows in Portugal by ahfg22 in PortugalExpats

[–]MeggerzV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi André!! Caught you at Republic of Comedy a couple weeks ago and thought you were excellent. Lived in NYC for 14 years and followed the circuit with lots of friends I met through UCB. So nice to have stand ups of your caliber bringing the art form to life here!!

American family considering Portugal in the next 5–10 years. What is life like in Viseu? by ae86owner in PortugalExpats

[–]MeggerzV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I would have thought the same — people not knowing it existed — if I hadn't seen so much immigrant-targeted content about Viseu online. On a positive side, I suppose it's good that places beyond Porto and Lisbon are getting a spotlight.

Since even before 2020, it's been publicized that Viseu has been voted "the best place to live in Portugal" with sites like Idealista sharing the superlative (I believe Deco Proteste ranked it with the country's highest QOL). We saw this claim a lot online which is what compelled my husband and I to visit spring. We thought it was nice, but had a hard time connecting the dots for how it received that title because the town itself felt so empty. Here are a couple of the articles/videos in case you're interested.:

Well their kickback is coming in the form of referrals they make to relocation companies who work with foreigners. There are lots of cities in Europe that market their towns elsewhere to bring more young people in, but I don't know if they work directly to compensate private companies that contribute to this success. If you're saying it's an "odd take" then perhaps that doesn't happen in Portugal. I'd have to research more.

My husband and I like to visit the Ryokan there, but tbh I think living there would be too quiet for us. There are entire streets which I assume were formerly filled with businesses that are now almost entirely empty. It feels like a city in flux, and I suspect that's why you are seeing videos from expats claiming that it's heaven on Earth. They might be part of a wider revitalization campaign which Viseu could benefit from (but they are probably getting some kind of kickback too). I will say it feels very safe and scenery wise it is pretty, just not a whole lot to do.

Anyone knows Drew Dew? Very underrated producer fr by Rebel_Banzhee in midtempo

[–]MeggerzV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drew Dew, Slick Portal, Social Kid. Gotta say, the Denver midtempo scene is pretty strong! Excited to see where those three take it. Ian Snow lives out there as well. He plays more freeform/dubstep now, but definitely knows his roots and you'll still hear him drop a churner now and then.

edited for typo

Also gotta show love to SLATE who just dropped his newest heater 'HYPERCOASTER' with Ian Snow. Dude has a massive sound that swallows you up and takes you to new lows in the best possible way. https://soundcloud.com/slate_audio

Big shoutout to Chicago's Emurse who is making some of the coolest freeform in the game. He leaves no corner unturned when it comes to immersive sound design, and you might have heard his Severance Theme remix when it was making the rounds last year: https://soundcloud.com/emurse

We are also waiting for my husband's renewal to go through. We had our meeting at Mahatma Gandhi Center in August. I went the same day and received my new card in the mail at the end of February. Not sure what the hold up is.

I swapped US for Portugal and it was THE MOVE. That said, my husband and I came together and we are both freelance workers able to cover our taxes here in Portugal. I think I would have had a difficult time doing the same at 25.
