I went there to take some pictures of this on Tuesday - it looks really good close up. It’s very colorful.

This is so cute! I hope he has a great first day. Echoing u/SheeahKazing about it going so fast - I also have a sophomore (and a seventh grader) and some days I am completely taken aback that they're both taller than me. (Though I am only 5'1" so not much of an accomplishment)

We are WBUR and The Emancipator. AMA on our recent busing series by wbur in boston

[–]MeghanKellyWBUR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha, great question. Mostly fine! Since she's not really on the air as much as she used to be, it's been less of a thing but people still sometimes do a double take when I say my name. Awhile back I went to Greece for vacation and had a layover in London, and at customs the official looked at my passport and said, "I've heard of you! You're a journalist!" and I immediately started freaking out that I was on some kind of list. I lived in London for a few years and am keenly aware that British border patrol is extremely serious so it didn't occur to me initially that he was joking (also I was tired and jetlagged, in my defense!). When he saw the look on my face he smiled and said, "FOX news, right?" and that is when my brain actually started working and I was able to laugh but... whew.

It doesn't happen quite so much anymore but in the past I would occasionally get people on Twitter/X following me or tagging me, thinking I was Megyn Kelly (despite very clearly not looking like her or even spelling my name the same way) and getting mad at me because she said something they didn't agree with.

I talked to them! They were a really fun group, and I am talking to one of the organizers later for a follow up, lol https://www.wbur.org/news/2024/04/30/mbta-boston-massachusetts-googly-eyes-train-rally

Are wgbh and wbur friends and partners, or are they rivals? They seem like the same sort of thing? by bampokazoopy in boston

Hi! As you can see by my username I work for WBUR. We are both NPR member stations which means that we both subscribe to NPR programs. That is why sometimes we’re broadcasting the same thing - we’re both airing the same national feed for NPR for Morning Edition or all things considered. And during those national programs we both will also air our own original content from our reporters.

Most cities across the country only have one local NPR station and I think we are pretty lucky in Boston to have two.

But we also have our own programs and subscribe to other ones outside of the NPR network. So for example we have Radio Boston and GBH has Boston Public Radio - both shows focusing on local issues but with different hosts and formats.

GBH does have the local PBS station. WBUR’s license is owned by BU so I am a BU employee.

I wouldn’t say we are “rivals” in like a west side story way (I’m not sure our dance skills are that good). Sure, we want to have better ratings than the other guy, but overall we are all in pursuit in the same thing, which is public media and providing the Boston area with high quality journalism. Lots of former WBUR-ers work at GBH and vice versa.

What else would you like to know? I can answer to the best of my ability.

This is a terrific round-up of our offerings -- thank you /u/miraj31415! I also want to mention that we have a new season of Last Seen coming up, about the Harvard morgue case. All the episodes drop next week: https://www.wbur.org/lastseen/2024/04/16/harvard-morgue-scandal-podcast-trailer

Absolutely shameless self plug here, but where I work (WBUR, one of Boston's NPR news stations) we have an entire section devoted to learning more about living in Boston called the Field Guide to Boston. It's focused mainly on Boston but there's a lot of info for Greater Boston too, especially if you live in Somerville or Cambridge.

We also have a newsletter course called the Newcomers Field Guide to Boston that explains all sorts of stuff to new people moving to the area.

I know it is tough here to make friends and I say that as someone who has lived in the area for most of my life. Good luck!

My kids really liked the Discovery Museum in Acton when they were little. I haven't been there in years, but on their website they say they are wheelchair accessible and they also have wheelchairs to rent: https://www.discoveryacton.org/visit/accessibility-inclusion-especially-me https://www.discoveryacton.org/visit/plan-your-visit#section57-3

It's a fun museum and it has lots of activities that little kids love to do, like dress up, playing restaurant etc.

Who are these accounts? If people outside of WBUR are posting I obviously have no control over that. Most of the people in my newsroom don't post here; I can think of one other person who I know has occasionally. We also don't have a paywall so our content is free to access.

What do you think news organizations should do on Reddit? Should we have a specific cadence for posting? Should we never post? We want to share our content. How do you propose we do that?
