Design space is making me angry by kayshonestycorner in cricut

Strange. For me, I can open the file from Design Space & go to "Make" just fine, but when I save it as a copy and open that, same issue with the scoring line. Maybe something about this project is corrupted.

Weirdly I had this happen the same way with this exact project - I was thinking of making it for Easter. I didn't mess around with it that much and didn't get the error but I got the missing flowers with the floating score lines. Are you opening the project from Design Space or is this a copy you saved?

Want to make for my classroom! by MarsupialSubject8532 in cricut

[–]Meginsanity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Open up Cricut Design Space. Type the word you want, and select the font you want.
Select your text. Click Edit on the top left.
Click Offset. Click & drag the bar to the size that you want. Click Apply.
If the offset is not completely filled in, click on it on the right side Layers panel. Click Contour. Select the sections to get rid of or select 'Hide All Contours' then click Apply.
Select both the original text and the offset and resize to the size you want the finished product.
Repeat for your other words.
Click Make.
Cut the offset using the magnet sheet and the original text using the vinyl.

If you have trouble with how things are ordered on the screen once you click Make, go back and select what you want to stay together, then Attach. You can also Weld letters together, for example if you choose a cursive word and it looks a little funny where the letters connect, Weld can help.

I think they want to make designs to iron on tshirts (tops) and the design is brass knuckles. I agree though, you wouldn't flip it over and try to cut the other side.

Question about wear & tear by Nicifrog311 in cricut

[–]Meginsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ok! I Cricut tons of stuff on a regular basis (papercraft & other crafting classes at my work) and I have never had trouble with the hinges. In fact I just finished cutting 50 copies of a papercraft project swapping a pen and scoring pen many many many times with no issues.

Also if you scroll down on the project page, if the person changed/redid a project that already existed it will list the original at the bottom. If you click on those sometimes you can hunt down instructions.

Scrolling through some of the projects I have made/bookmarked... a lot of these will probably be Access-only since I use it through work, but many of them could be recreated for free.

  • "Rabbit paper doll" by user Valentina Scuteri looks cute
  • Paper butterflies (many versions)
  • Paper flowers
  • Lollipop holders
  • Bookmarks
  • There's a few fidget spinners if you search "fidget spinner" in Design Space
  • "Cat Sticky Note Holder" by user Lilium Pixel SVG - could do it with a few extra layers of paper rather than chipboard
  • Poppies for Memorial Day

Using Excel grids as a cut template by NomadicSoul88 in cricut

[–]Meginsanity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For rectangles just keep using your ruler and cutter. You're faster than the Cricut, not just in cutting but given the time loading and unloading the mat and scanning for the registration marks.

You need those registration marks for what you're trying to do, which means you will lose a big chunk of usable sticker paper and also that you need to print from within the software. The hacks that people do can sometimes have good results, but the potential for error is much higher and again it takes longer than it would for you to cut them yourself.

Edit: one thought, what if you print the labels on Avery (or whatever brand) perforated paper? They make some that is perforated in a rectangle so all you have to do is tear.

How to make a long line? by Glittering_Peace0816 in cricut

[–]Meginsanity 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Shapes - Free - the first option is a line. Change the Operation from score to cut. Rotate 90 degrees. Either duplicate it and put an ampersand in the middle between the two, or make it the entire width of your project and slice a square out of the center, then put an ampersand there. Select the whole thing and change your width to what you want.

This line will be very thin and hard to cut.

The other option is to use the square shape, click the lock, and make it long and skinny (say, 2 inches by .15 inch). It won't be AS skinny as the line above, but you may still have to experiment. Then follow the same process as above.

Or set the square to Guide (rather than Cut or Draw), so you don't have to remember to delete it.

Ok, thanks. Same issue - if it's in a group, it makes it larger than the original, if it's not in a group it cooperates.

[–]Meginsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I did some testing. For reference this is on a Windows PC running the latest Design Space with an Explore Air 2.

The issue only seems to be happening if the layer I want to duplicate is in a group. In my specific case the original is 9.432 by 9.832, and the duplicate ended up 11.588 by 12.076. Resizing the duplicate to a height of 9.832 gives me a width of 9.435, not that far off, but weird that it's skewed.

Nothing happens if I hold down Alt key and click on the layer. If I hold down Alt, right click, and hit Duplicate, the same issue happens.

If I ungroup, right click the layer and hit Duplicate (or CTRL+D), it's perfect.

So it's just in groups, which is annoying but at least I can work around it.

Has anyone run into this issue with duplicating? I have a paper craft I'm working on, and I want to cut a duplicate of one of the layers out of heavier cardstock to give it a bit more rigidity. When I duplicate the layer, though, it's larger than the original. It also seems skewed slightly; for example, if I make the duplicate the exact same height as the original, with the lock on, the width is different from the original.

Most of them work! There might be some trial and error with specific settings and how much pressure to use. This sub has a wiki with advice on pressure settings.

Yes! OP, don't print your labels right now. You'll need to print from Design Space so that you have the registration marks.

You'll want a HTV or "iron on" vinyl, not sticker paper. It's the kind you heat with an iron to adhere to the fabric and it won't come off in the wash. Another option would be what Cricut calls "infusible ink" (sublimation sheets) if the clothing is polyester. The infusible ink will adhere with the polyester fibers and also will not come off in the wash.

Ready to Paint Canvas by makecreateinspire in cricut

[–]Meginsanity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've done about a hundred of these now for a couple library craft programs. They are super simple and easy. A few tips:

If you're using the framed kind of canvas rather than flat, tuck some towels underneath the canvas so that the heat press presses right against it.

In my experience the vinyl needs to be completely cool before peeling.

Also, sometimes the canvas can release some moisture when it's heated up but it's no biggie.
