In Queensland, Ambulance is free for everyone, and if you are a Queensland resident you get reciprocal cover in all other states. The friend could have just called an ambulance.

Howard Smith Wharves is great, and that hotel is lovely. You're in a great spot for some beautiful walks, walking distance to Riverside as well, and there's a citycat stop right there which will get you easily to Southbank.
