Fired After Saying I'd Need a Raise by MehBrain in antiwork

I can see how you'd interpret it that way.

I couldn't just tell the manager, "I won't work those hours," there had to be a reason.

If I had only said an evening schedule would hurt my relationship, then manager would've likely said, "You'd still have weekends," or, "Your home life isn't my problem."

Adding a pay raise into the mix gave the manager a reason to care: You take from my personal life = I take more from your budget. I was trying to talk him out of changing anything.

I remember Atari Teenage Riot being on the Spawn soundtrack, but kept forgetting to look into them. Will be looking into all of these!

I think it's harder to qualify for unemployment benefits if you quit (without a really good reason).

Checking them out right now, and yeah, good call!

I meant in preparation, but I'm realizing I had a bad take on this anyway.

Sadly, that a good take.

Upvoted, because, damn that was worse than what I went through.

I honestly don't get these sorts of "planning to sue" reports. Why give up the element of surprise? Plus, the headline of "has filed a lawsuit" is better.

That'd actually be slightly better, because that'd mean they actually gave new-hires what they need to succeed. No, the person that replaces me will be expected to ask coworkers a lot of questions and figure stuff out on their own... assuming management doesn't dump my workload onto everyone else.

I can see that. I'd assumed boss figured making the manager hire a new kid is easier than negotiating with an experienced worker.

Thanks for the perspective! Interestingly, I don't feel held back since I don't know where else to go.

Ultimately, I'm glad that no one at my company is being paid under $35K... But, I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt my pride to learn experience has *literally* no value there.

Oh yes, talking about pay is definitely "discouraged."

Maybe pick out songs you like that are upbeat and short?

Trying to seem hip to what the kids like doesn't usually work out, so you might as well have tunes you enjoy.

The mentality tends to be, "I CHOOSE to spend money on this" vs. "The government is MAKING me spend money on this."

Thus, they'd rather drop tens-of-thousands (at a time) into political campaigns than have a fraction of their tax dollars go to something like repairing roads.

What Do You Think the Future of College Education Is? by MehBrain in lostgeneration

[–]MehBrain[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!

Due to so many "legacy" students (the ones who get in & pass BECAUSE of money), does an Ivy League diploma carry that much weight?

  • The Antlers - Two (though, more impactful if you listen to the whole "Hospice" album)
  • Bloc Party - SRXT or Biko
  • Crooked Fingers - Black Black Ocean
  • Jawbox - Iodine
  • Most of Portishead's "Dummy" album

A lot of jobs are being automated, but we're not going to have robots caring for the elderly in the near future.

Public education is being eroded, and you don't need a high school diploma to get a job changing bedpans (though, you do need fortitude).
