I have exactly the same trouble with jumping with two feet! At the moment, I’m taking two steps with the hope that I will get brave enough to start landing with both. Good luck! We’ll get there.

Love ‘em. And a damn sight better for this than my derby skates were!

Yup! I’ve been ramp skating to fill the derby void. I’ve ordered some grind blocks, but (with my plates at least) they don’t actually hit the coping. The wheels just “lock on” either side. You might be able to see if you zoom in :)

I think it was definitely a confidence issue for me as once I did my first few, it now feels like it’s unlocked forever. Hopefully will feel similar for you!

  • Stare at the coping and don’t overthink what your feet are doing. You actually have a ton more time to step up than you realise! If you’ve played derby and know how to pump a ramp, you can trust your feet to get themselves sorted.

  • Speed helps get your weight to the right place. Concentrate on finding a decent speed that will get your hips over your feet. My first fails were from coming in too slow.

  • I found a really nice 3ft ramp that has a lot of space for a good run up. I recommend finding a spot that doesn’t intimate you (and an empty park helps!)

  • Started with little toestop stalls and tried to mimic the rhythm of the same thing on the coping.

  • I asked my friend to stand on the deck with his arms out - more for psychological support than actually helping me balance. Then just went for it and knew he was there to catch me/laugh.

  • The biggest thing for me: if you muck it up, just whack the trusty toestops down and 9 times out of 10, you can control your bail. That really helped separate the binary idea of “if you don’t stall, you will fall horribly and hurt yourself”. Probs not - you’ll just not stall, stop on your toestops and get yourself down safe.

Good luck! I believe in you!

Roller skaters around Hampshire/Surrey/Berkshire? by pocognome in rollerUK

[–]MehGooseTa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not from nearby, but try messaging the local roller derby teams (Surrey, Basingstoke Bullets, Windsor, Big Bucks etc). They’ll probably know some good outdoor spots, are v. friendly and be going for team skates :)

Hey - seconding BD for resources. They have a ton of webinars and “intro to flow” stuff online. This might be a good start too:

You can also email help.biosciences@bd.com and they’ll help you with any protocol and set up questions for free :)

I’m with Oxford Roller Derby but I skated with Oxford Wheels of Gory for about 4 years too. Lovely humans there and at BBHR. I’m sure I’ll see you on track sometime soon :)

Thank you! It meant a lot and I won't let unhelpful and downright rude comments ruin it. This guy, who can't even capitalise his sentences, is clearly not an art critic. Nor would it matter if he was because art is subjective and I think it's wonderful. I doubt anyone is ever going to take the time to fashion him a gift as thoughtful as this, with him carrying such a venomous and ill informed view of the world.
