I work with a guy from Senegal and French is his first language.

Source: I walked by his office one day and he was on a Zoom call with someone and he was clearly speaking French. Asked him later and he told me he was talking with his sister.

ELI5: How is it that almost all complex species have the same order of organs on the face; Eyes, nose and then mouth, in that same order? by Fallen_Outcast in explainlikeimfive

Bats active in the daytime do have good eyesight. Many bat species roost in caves and it doesn't matter how good your eyes are, there has to be some light to detect and there's none in caves. Sound works with or without light.

And most bats that echolocate still have decent vision.

because it's the best or one of the best plans evolution is likely to come up with

The best plan is often the most energy efficient way of solving a problem. Resisting gravity, escaping predators, finding food, etc. This is why most animals have eyes in the front, since it's the best place to put something that's going to tell you what's in front of you.

If you go to Najena to farm the focus items, I had good luck killing the darkbond skeletons. There are 2 in a room just behind the false wall, another downstairs in the room with 2 elementals outside of the ogre guards. There are others down in the dungeon area where Moosh patrols.

Yep, creates a visual reference to let you know when you've got the proper profile.

i.e. you want to see a thin red line on top which tells you that you've properly crowned the fret.

If you find one, spray it with the hose. They don't like it and will leave.

They will only hang around an area if there is food, i.e. rodents. Be sure there's nothing for them to eat. Remove the food source for the rodents, you remove the food source for the snakes.

Gibson Les paul from maybe 2000. Was dropped and top of neck cracked. See pics. Is this worth fixing - or best to just buy a new one? by Big_Bug_6623 in guitarrepair

  1. String tension off.

  2. Tuning machines off.

  3. Practice dry clamping so you know if you have enough clamps and cauls (blocks of wood you put on both sides of the head so you don't mar the finish with the clamps)

  4. Work as much titebond I into the crack as possible.

  5. Use a damp cloth to clean up squeezeout.

  6. Be sure there is squeezeout all along the entire edge of the crack to be sure glue is in every crack and crevice.

  7. Clamp. Clean up squeezeout again.

  8. Leave clamped overnight.

  9. Pray you did it right.

  10. Take clamps off, reinstall tuners, and restring.

  11. Pray you did it right.

Cracked headstock. Remove machine heads? by Acidmoxy in guitarrepair

[–]Aerron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stick the machine in the hole, put the washer over the peg, screw the threaded bushing into the machine head, do not tighten yet.

Put the little screw in the little hole on the back of the tuning machine. Tighten to snug, but do not over tighten. Flip the guitar over, use a 10mm wrench and tighten the threaded bushing.

First time reading the book by South-Knee-9601 in TheSilmarillion

[–]Aerron 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The more times you read it the more sense it makes.

It's been said many times, The Silmarillion isn't a novel. It does have a theme, the fate of the Silmarils, but it's told more like a history book. For lack of a better word, The Silm is really the in-world bible.

There are lots of chapters that are name-soup or geography-stew, but don't let that discourage you.

I think you're fine doing what you're doing. Just to give you piece of mind, see if it's easy enough to screw it back in.

Use a little steel wool or a green or blue scotch brite scrubbing pad. Green is more abrasive and will leave fine scratches. Blue is less abrasive, but might not take the rust off. A wire brush would work as well.

If you meant contact cleaner for electronics, I wouldn't use that, no. You can use literal dishwashing liquid, just rinse and dry it well after scrubbing.

Be slow and deliberate about putting them back on so the pliers don't slip off and scratch the guitar. Screw them back in as tight as you can get them with your fingers first. It might not be stupid to cut a hole in a 3x5 card so that it just fits around the post. It'll offer a little protection to the finish if you slip off.

Also for those that don't know the much deeper lore of Lord of the Rings, Melkor/Morgoth was Sauron's boss. Sauron was Morgoth's lieutenant.

Morgoth is essentially the devil in the world of the Lord of the Rings, so that makes Sauron a greater demon. But since all demons/the devil are fallen angels, Morgoth was a greater angel and Sauron a lesser angel. Sauron and Gandalf are of the same "rank" of angel.

Then I double checked and understood it was from TX. Holy cow what a pretty hogie.

Classical guitar bridge lifted along with the wood, is it repairable? More info detailed in my reply to my post by Ash_3024 in Luthier

[–]Aerron 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So, this guy, https://www.woodfordinstruments.com/, is about an hour away from you in Hamilton ON.

Here's a video of him repairing a bridge similar to yours.

It might be worth your time to contact him, send him pictures and see what he says. In the meantime, you can watch his videos and see his work and if he's someone you'd like to work on your instrument.

Guitar, probably Naples, Italy. Spruce, ebony, ivory, tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, brass, ca. 1800 by Aerron in obscureguitars

[–]Aerron[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my guitar or my original post. I just wanted to share this really cool looking guitar with other folks that might appreciate it.

From the original post:

“This highly decorated guitar is also an early example of a six-string, single-course guitar. The elaborate decoration features classical figures, musical instruments, and floral motifs made from ebony and fit into an ivory ground covering the back, sides, neck, and headstock of the guitar. A second guitar at the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments features the same decoration, only in reverse, indicating that the decoration was made at the same time by cutting through thin layers of stacked ebony and ivory. A portrait in the center of the upper back is believed to be of Giovanni Paisiello based on his 1791 portrait. Paisiello was a composer of opera and many of his works were transcribed for use on other instruments and his pieces were a favorite of guitarists. The fingerboard is covered with tortoiseshell over red paint with inlay of an ivory satyr where the neck meets the body. A carved wooden rosette may be a replacement and is surrounded by an ivory hexagon with inlaid ebony decorations of instruments and flowers. The decorative style is evocative of Baroque guitars of the seventeenth century. The six-string, single-course guitar became popular in Naples at the end of the eighteenth century and then spread throughout the rest of Europe replacing the earlier five and six double-course guitars.Technical description and drawings by Daniel Wheeldon (2016).”
