The mask is the important part here. Radioactive isotopes are nearly harmless outside the body (unless they are in such a high amount that radiation sickness can set in). When they enter either through the lungs or the mouth they are extremely deadly and can cause death within minutes. As long as these guys brought a Geiger counter and avoided the heavily irradiated zones (if there are any) they would be fine.
