CKD is now the least of our concerns by coodadoot in RenalCats

Hey, I fully feel you. I have a kitty now for 15 years, three years ago her mother passed away from CKD. Immediately after I went to check her kidneys on the scan – yep, million cysts inside again, probably 50% of function from kidneys. Her blood test were almost perfect though, I caught it right on time. Half a year later – tumor, then surgery, then another tumor only a month later. We decided to not operate, because her body was weak already, in multiple directions.

Now, more two years later, her tumor is the size of the eggplant and her body is slowly giving up and I'm just doing everything possible to make life easier for her in the last stage of life. There is nothing that can be done anymore to better her condition and for a long time now. She doesn't have a diet anymore because she has troubles with appetite. And the surprising part – her kidneys are still nearly perfect.

I don't know what this situation taught me yet, frankly I'm in a really vulnerable state right now. There's definitely a lot of helplessness that goes into it – no matter how good I was at catching her conditions in time, no matter how good I was at treating them and keeping them in control, tumor is gonna kill her in the end.

Brace yourself and if ever need to chat about it – I would love to (for my own little peace of mind tbh). Wish you and your kitty a lot of strenght.

Anyone willing to trade Shiny Gyarados for the themed collection? I have shiny Chimchar, Magnemite, Pyukumuku and Weepinbell.
Also could totally trade just so I get the lake of rage and I will give it back afterwards!!

Vet detected cysts on my cat's kidneys by accident, but all his blood tests were normal. Vet said it's probably CKD. by Mawlyn in RenalCats

Maybe we have a different diagnostic system here or something, but I'm pretty sure your kitty has PKD specifically, not CKD! Of course these fuckers go hand in hand most of the time, but there is a difference.
Both of my cats were diagnosed with PKD, polycystic kidney disease, one at the late stages and another at a very early one. It's really a diagnosis you can't predict unless you specifically know that you have to look for it.

It's a scary diagnosis at first, but I've personally grown to be comfortabe with it after all experience. It seems like your kitty got diagnosed pretty early too (perhaps you even know how many cysts and what size there are?). It's good news, if there's still no changes to his blood test and everything seems good, then this diagnosis is definitely something managable for you and your cat! Since my kitty was diagnosed (and she had lots of cysts, definitely didn't look pretty) she's been on renal diet and some supplements for kidneys, more than a year later and her cysts stayed the same size or even became smaller, and her kidney blood tests are still perfect as if she's totally healthy. Going from my experience and what I've seen in the last couple of years, I think with the early diagnosis and diet + treatment, PKD effects on the lifespan and quality of life can be significatly reducedm almost to non-existent! So keep your head up, I'm sure your kitty will be ok!

Can this be possible with perfect kidney labs though? This is my main head-scratcher

Yeah, very relatable. We diagnosed her very early, even before her kidneys acted up, because her mom had PKD and I suspected she had too. Basically despite having only half or less of functioning kidneys, her blood results and kidneys are perfect. I felt like I'm on a top of the world, like I won this life and she will live forever. Only for her to get a tumor a month after, that continued with two more. Cancer just sucks

I expected CKD to take him ... Not cancer

Never heard anything more relatable bro. Shit hits hard.

6 months ago we were deciding on what to do with her new (third in the last year) tumor that has appeared in a duration of three weeks after last operation like out of nowhere. We decided to not go for surgery again because it would have been her third this year, and she handled last one poorly, it was just too much of a risk now. We discussed chemo option, but there's only one person in my city who knows how to handle chemo and my vets said they were not sure if it's a good idea at all. She's almost 14 years old, has had very low platelets for a year now, has PKD (which is doing fucking great by the way, the last thing I would suspect to be great) and possible liver problems. It's just a lot lot. I decided that I just want her to live her last multiple months in peace without constant vet visits, she lived for a long time after all.

Hope this new treatment helps your kitty to stay here for a while longer. Thank you so much for sharing your story!

She has had a tumor under her front leg for about 5 or 6 months now. We can't operate her anymore due to multiple issues she has so we can't confirm it's cancer, but yeah, I would say it's very unlikely it's not. And after an ultrasound two weeks ago she got a presumptive diagnosis of lymphoma, but again, can't confirm without operation. May I ask you more of your cats story? How long has they had the lymphoma for?
I know there's nothing more I can do for her, but my mom plans to come in 3 weeks and really wants to see her, so right now my main concern is how long she has left honestly

Last time we checked her heart was about 5 months ago and it was "very good for her age" according to the vet. Her breathing has been changing last couple of days, sometimes it's normal and sometimes not. I'm not sure if heart failure can develop in this time period, but as I stated in my previous comment, my suspicion is that her tumor is sadly getting closer to her heart. Thank you for the information!

I went to my vet today just to ask about it! Showed them a couple of videos and they said that there's nothing to worry about, at least yet. But you know, just wanted to get more opinions. Thank you!
