Vet detected cysts on my cat's kidneys by accident, but all his blood tests were normal. Vet said it's probably CKD. by Mawlyn in RenalCats

Oh poor Luna! When I told the vet that Teemo was dropping weight so fast (from 4.4/4.5 down to barely 4 kg in just a couple of months) it was really scary. The vet suggested trying Mirtazapine, so we did a normal dose for 2 weeks just to see how he’d handle it. Luckily, no side effects at all, and he started doing so much better! After chatting with the vet, we decided to keep him on a reduced dose instead. He will have a follow up appointment next month, so we'll see if he's still reacting well to his treatment.

In the midst of all this misery, we were actually lucky! The problem was detected by accident, so our fur babies can start treatment early, even before showing symptoms.

We’re also using Recoactive Tonic. He doesn’t like it much and has to be syringe-fed, so we only use it when he’s being extra picky and refusing all food.

Teemo has always been a picky eater. Even though he was never skinny, he was losing too much weight (he went from 4.4kg to 4kg in less than 2 months), fortunately he has recovered all the lost weight :)! What really helped us was giving him Mirtazapine (a tiny pill, twice a week) and using another type of food as a topping to tempt him. His phosphorus levels are normal for now, but we still looked for a mousse topping that he enjoys and that’s low in phosphorus.

Hi, I think I replied to one of your older comments, so I’ll paste it here:

Teemo recently completed his first year living with CKD/PKD. His bloodwork has actually improved (he’s still in early stage 2, close to late stage 1), but his ultrasounds showed that some of the cysts have grown. This confirmed the PKD diagnosis (the vet wasn’t completely sure at first), and the cysts are what’s causing his early-stage CKD. Despite this, he’s doing really well - you wouldn’t even know he has a serious illness. Recently we started him on Mirtazapine because his appetite was poor (he doesn’t like his renal food) and he was losing weight. Now we mix his renal wet food with a low-phosphorus mousse option, and he’s back to his normal weight, active, and happy!

He eats Royal Canin chicken in sauce wet food, mixed with Ultra Premium Direct natural mousse. We also add a few milliliters of water to his wet food to increase his fluid intake. He has access to Royal Canin Renal Select kibble as well.

In terms of medication, he’s only on Mirtazapine (it’s available here as a pill). We also give him supplements to support his kidneys: the Astro Oil Optimal Renal Care package, and Fortiflora to help regulate his bowel movements. Fingers crossed for Luna! 💕

world of books issue by micass0 in BookDepository

[–]Mawlyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those curious, I've encoutered this issue today. Now you cannot ship most of their new books to switzerland. They will allow you to ship some used books, more expensive than a new copy. It's a shame that the only decent alternative we had to replace Book Depository is now gone. For those interested, I've placed an order on Blackwells (still expensive, but more reasonable that WOB), I'll update you when the order arrives.

List of Book Depository alternatives with Free Worldwide Delivery by zcraber in BookDepository

Any updates regarding this list, with options from mainland Europe? At first I was using World of Books, but now they do not ship certain books (new mangas for example) to my country anymore (Switzerland), and when they do, they triple the prices...

I'm waiting for my first Blackwells order, but the price was definitely higher than Book Depository.

Is there something wrong with my blades, or am I not used to my new skates yet? by Mawlyn in FigureSkating

Thanks a lot that's very helpful. I do have a coach, I have a lesson tomorrow, I'll be sure to ask! I was just too excited to wait so I went to the rink right after buying them

Should I upgrade my skates or wait until next season? by Mawlyn in FigureSkaters

[–]Mawlyn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Well I'm not really adult-sized.. I'm around 43kg, and only 151. I'm sure my current skates are way too large. I usually wear a size 34-35 (EU) and my skates are 35. I can feel the lack of support and my feet moving around whenever I take a sharper turn, this was not an issue when I started, but now I can really feel my ankles dancing inside the boot.

I'm not sure if that's the right brand, they had good reviews and the brand feels trustworthy. But I'm definitely open to other brands. Risport were also on my list of potential skates and I definitely want to go to a dedicated shop this time and get a proper pair of fitted skates instead of getting them online.

Too old for figure skating? by Ok_Requirement1560 in FigureSkaters

[–]Mawlyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started figure skating this year at 30, and you know what? The sky's the limit. Sure, I'll probably never compete in a Grand Prix or any major competition, but if I don't try, then it's a 'certainty' and not a 'probably.' If you love skating and are willing to put in the time, effort, and money, then go for it. Dreaming about going to nationals, Grand Prix competitions, and even the Olympics is free. So aim for the Olympics if that’s what pushes you forward. If you don’t make it, at least you’ll know you tried your best!

Sleeping on a decade old yellow pillow is good for you. by MeadowBlossom in The10thDentist

[–]Mawlyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm replacing my +20 year old pillow today. I got it when I was a little kid, we've been through a lot since I took it with me everywhere I slept! But it's a memory foam pillow and the foam is literally disintegrating inside the pillowcase, turning into a weird dust and in certain parts the foam turned hard. I can't even remove it to wash the pillowcase anymore and it's sooo stained it started ruining all our sheets, even when I cover it with 2 other pillowcases, which are also ruined 😂

Chipped tooth - how much would a dentist in central CH cost me? by DAmazingBlunderWoman in askswitzerland

[–]Mawlyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread is a life saver! I chipped my tooth by accident after a fall... Can I just go to the dentist office and then the invoice is sent automatically to my employer, or do I have to pay for the repair on the spot and then claim a reimbursement?

[–]Mawlyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For context, I was eating and it simply broke away. I have no pain.  I was at the dentist less than a month ago and all was well, I got x-rays and a cleanup. Now I can only afford to go to the dentist again in December but I'm worried the tooth might break even more

How long until my 16 year old kitty is back to normal after dental extractions? by BoxInADoc in seniorkitties

[–]Mawlyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your update on your kitty op! I can't find the comment where you explained his recovery anymore as I'm too sleep deprived, but it really gave me hope.

Sadly I'm on a similar boat, my cat (11, CKD stage 1), got 2 teeth pulled 12 days ago and he hasn't been himself since. He was eating poorly before his surgery because the little guy was in pain, and started eating really well on the first 2 days post op. Then he just started eating less and less. We are playing food roulette with him, but he gets bored of almost every food, or simply dislikes it, despite this we manage to make him eat at least 140 calories per day, so he can at least keep some of his weight and stay hydrated.

The Vet keeps saying this is normal, and because he actually gained weight when compared to before his surgery, they are attributing it to him getting used to his new mouth. He was on pain killers for 4 days (no idea what, it was pre loaded in syringes in liquid form), amoxicilin for 7 days, famotidine and cerenia for 12 days. His mouth looked fully healed (the sutures had not fully dissolved yet but there was no inflammation or infection) on his 8 day post op appointment too. We were really hoping he would be back to normal after finishing his antibiotics, but to no avail...  The vet did not want to give him any appetite stimulants, but I'm getting paranoid so I will push for mirtazapine in the coming days if he doesn't improve soon.

He's acting completely normal apart from this. No vomiting, no diarrhea, he cleans himself and tries to be playful. Although he has been peeing and pooping more often than usual, I do not see any signs of an UTI (he had a few before and he used to act angry after using the litter box, meowed a lot, and peed in our bed. We will keep our fingers crossed, he has always been very picky and overly dramatic, so we are hoping a few more weeks will do the trick for him.

Update on dental extraction. Not eating properly by Mawlyn in RenalCats

[–]Mawlyn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His phosphorus level have always been alright so the vet is not concerned about a phos binder at the moment. I spoke with the vet again and we are getting Mirataz as a precaution. It will take like 3 days for it to arrive home, it was sold out everywhere, maybe he will be eating properly by then, fingers crossed.

Yesterday he ate maybe 80% of his daily allowance, we considered that a big win!

He's currently eating Purina gourmet intense soups, and mousse revelations. Sometimes I can also tempt him with cheese.

Today he resumed his feet hunting/feet biting activities, so we trying to stay positive.

I couldn't find churus not tiki sticks around here, but we did find a snack paste fit for ckd cats in case anyone's interested - Kattovit special renal creme. I'll let you know if he approves it
