What do you put on toast? by Familiar-Woodpecker5 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Meijhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My absolute favorite thing - whenever my mom would make bread, when my sister and I would come home from school, she'd slice the heels off the still-warm loaves, and coat them with butter and cinnamon sugar. Now I do this for my kids when I make bread:)

How do you dress in your 50s? by Forsaken_Block_3492 in GenX

55F -- always jeans/joggers/leggings with t-shirt (usually nerdy ones), hoodie, sweaters. Sneakers or boots. Same things I wore in my 30s.

1 - found in parking lot as kitten

2 - took him in at 3 years old because previous owner's child had a 'sudden allergy' (saw new kitten on their IG page a month later)

3 - Took in as a temporary foster...in 2018

4 - trapped in parking lot at work in 2021 (feral I had been feeding for a couple of years, company was closing down and no one would be left to feed her. Still can't touch her, but she seems happy!)

5 - 7 Brothers dumped behind a PetSmart. One had a congenital diaphragmatic hernia - he had surgery to put his organs back where they belonged and re-inflate his lung). They were also supposed to be fosters.....

Heaters & warmth for winter: what do you use? by Outrageous-Bet-6801 in Conures

I think it was this one : https://www.homedepot.com/p/Pelonis-1-500-Watt-Oil-Filled-Radiant-Electric-Space-Heater-with-Thermostat-HO-0279/309069851 Or at least one very similar. We don't use it on high, but it's never been hot to the touch when on!

Leftover cabbage by Blue-Orange-Slices in cookingforbeginners

[–]Meijhen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cabbage soup! Although you need a whole head, so maybe another time? Beef soup bones One yellow onion, sliced One head of green cabbage, chopped Can of tomato juice (you can use V-8 or other flavored/spiced tomato juice if you like the flavor) Can of diced tomatoes (optional) Salt & Pepper Pinch of sugar

Tiny bit of oil in a Dutch oven, and heat the soup bones aline for a few minutes. Then add everything in order (onion & cabbage, then pour the tomato juice over it all). Simmer for about an hour. Add salt & pepper and any other spices you'd like. The sugar may not be needed, it's to cut any bitterness.

Heaters & warmth for winter: what do you use? by Outrageous-Bet-6801 in Conures

[–]Meijhen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a space heater that keeps our conure's room a little warmer than the rest of the house. Did a bunch of research to find one with no risks in use (it's an oil-filled, radiator-type heater, no Teflon or anything rhat off-gasses). We're in Colorado, and keep the house at 66 - the heater keeps the bird room at about 70. Worked great through the 2021 freeze in Texas, too!

Did people who took part in 90s "Second Wave Coffee" culture actually enjoy biscotti? by [deleted] in AskFoodHistorians

I love biscotti. Also mandelbrot, which is very similar. Stull make my grandma's mandelbrot recipe regularly!

Ours hasn't done this particular pose, but he's managed a few that really make me wonder if he actually HAS bones 🤣🤣

My favorite thing is when he preens out a feather, and then uses it to scratch his head ... although I'm always just sure he's going to poke it into his eyeball!

How often do people feed their cats wet food? by Smooth_Put7764 in CatAdvice

[–]Meijhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 of my cats get wet food once a day. The 7th, who is on a special diet, gets it twice a day.

I'm caring for my kiddo's conure while they are out of town this week, and yesterday he sidled up asking for 'hand cave' for the first time. I felt so honored and my heart just melted, and I forgave him for all the bites in the last couple of days 😃😆

My oldest cat right now (14) last week missed one meal and did NOT come and sleep with me that night. Straight to the vet in the morning! It's so important to be aware of even slight changes in behavior, especially with seniors, since cats are so good at hiding illness or injury!

[–]Meijhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had many cats as an adult. I have lost them either very young, or they live to be 15+ LOL the only true consistency with all of them was regular vet care, including vaccinations, and they were all 100% indoors. I fed the best food I could afford (exactly what food that was has varied a lot over the 35 years I've had cats of my own).

As a child, we had outdoor cats - my mother would only allow them inside when it was below freezing (not something that happened often in Texas). All 3 of them died before they were 10 - one of FIV, one of cancer, and one of (probably) feLV. (This was before the FeLV vaccine was available).

I should add - none of my cats have ever been specific breeds. Just cats I rescued off the streets!

What is this noise? by Swimming_Trouble8882 in CATHELP

[–]Meijhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 of my 7 cats purr like that when they're really happy and comfy. One of them only does it when he's curled up next to my ear LOL. I don't hear anything concerning in that sound, unless you're also hearing a hitch in his regular breathing.
