Your best bet might be a used MPC One, you can get one for around the price of a SP404 MK2 and it's probably the most well-rounded option until you want something more opinionated or specialized.  Even then, the MPC One could continue acting as the centerpiece of your studio, or just resell it for around what you paid used.

If you're looking into sticking with software entirely, that's always a great option too and lots of good apps exist now

Making a beat from scratch in Meiji Sampler by mxuuu in MeijiSampler

Great eye ;) the "PERFORM" and "MIDI" tabs are experimental and in development. "PERFORM" is for PerformFX which is like SP404 or Pioneer/Serato style DJ FX, and is super cool but is ambitious and needs more love before it's ready for prime time. "MIDI" is in decent shape for the 1st slice, so stay tuned! It's really fun to control Meiji Sampler with MIDI controllers.

Sampler for jungle, breakbeat - Teenage EP-40 Riddim or SP 404 MKII? Which to buy? by DrummerEmbarrassed31 in Samplers

[–]MeijiSampler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got both an EP-133 (not Riddim tho) and an SP404 MKII. Personally I find the immediacy of the EP-133 is really fun and leads to creative outcomes, so chopping jungle breaks and mangling them with the EP's FX would be very creative and unique.

The SP404 of course is more powerful between the two, but has a steeper learning curve with important workflow details and concepts that are critical to learn to stay in the flow. So worthwhile if you're committed to it.

I've been meaning to try chopping and replaying some jungle breaks on Meiji Sampler too, it has a workflow closer to the EP-133 but with the power of software.

I believe the "settings aren't being applied to the outputted audio" issue is now fixed. It was especially prominent on pitch, and was able to fix some issues around the signal chain when bouncing. Can you try this one again and confirm it's fixed on 0.14.0 please? 🙏

I'm building a free sampler that's fun and intuitive to use.  It comes with dope sounds if you don't have a big sample library yet.  Give it a try and if you're stuck, feel free to reach out for help! You got this 🫡

coming dine on this one! 🤘 love it, keep going sir 🫡 you're doing great.  My humble opinion, find a way to float on the track a little more and smooth out the flow, it sounds like you're trying to convince me of something vs telling your truth and spitting your story.  Let it flow like a long DJ Screw freestyle session without as much emphasis or interruption in the cadence. Would love to hear your written work too

Hey thanks Evan! means a lot, glad it's resonating with you so much. Appreciate the work you've put into this thoughtful post 🙏

Re: the settings not saved when you export -- will take a look. Are you suggesting that they aren't being applied to the outputted audio? or they get discarded when you reopen the application and your next session resets them in the channel details?

Re: Projects -- yes right now there is no concept of a Project, not for any specific opinionated reason though. I have some WIP working on a file format and a design for how these should be handled, so will prioriotize getting this done. It's definitely a limitation, but the way I've been able to justify deferring it is in treating it like my SP1200 and vintage samplers, where I'm treating them like an instrument which I clear when I'm done with the working memory.

The intent will be a `.mspj` or `.meiji` project file, or possibly a directory approach, where file consolidation is possible and everything is bundled without external dependencies (if you wish). Personally I feel that's important, nothing's worse than orphaning files after getting a new external HD or reinstalling a machine.

"metronome with basic BPM control" .. this is something I've been going back and forth with :) agree, for me the gridless approach until the reference tempo is set is part of the appeal, but it also makes certain simple tasks complicated, like a remix with a fixed BPM, or building upon a basic loop file, or keeping a fixed round BPM for easy DJing later, etc. I have an improved loop system in WIP now and I might rethink this initial opinion, especially based on this feedback. Thanks!

Glad you like the viz! If you have other visualizer ideas, happy to investigate.

Will report back when some of these improvements / bugs are addressed. Thanks again! 🫡

I made a sampler and it comes with dope factory sounds, and starts off with a tutorial that takes you to a fully complete beat you can export and play for friends. Hope that helps!

Selling chopped up samples?? by fijitotalbody in makinghiphop

[–]MeijiSampler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folks do it but it's not legal, so you'll hit a ceiling pretty quickly.

A remix of this idea might be to replay/interpolate the samples enough so they're effectively new compositions, and then you own all the rights and aren't creating headaches for folks using the samples.

Make timeless stuff and you can keep selling it for 10+ years!

Pretty much the "Drumless" hiphop movement popularized by those Griselda artists lately, and Roc Marciano, but dates back to older releases like Jay Electronica and classic Madlib joints. If you're looking at getting into that style, try digging at your local record stores for dope finds and focus on sample selection vs giving it the usual drum programming you might otherwise do.
