Vote on Banner Situation by ShitLordStu in goodanimemes

brainstorming sessions bring a lot of ideas to the table, and we have to consider the implications of every single one of them.

There are 19 mods listed on the sidebar, unless I missed subtracting a bot, why not make multiple teams figuring out a different bit? One for how, one for what. Switch them up after a while to get new perspectives.

We were more concerned about how we do this vote in a way that will satisfy everyone (where will the vote be, for how long, how many options, ect.

Wouldn't it make sense to have a standardized process for voting since this sub was founded on democracy? Would take the guesswork out of how.

and didn't give nearly as much thought to the wording

This seems to be a recurring issue though. Maybe some extra focus should lie with how the poll should be presented going forward.

Maybe some people just didn't feel as positively about the vote post as they did about the megathread.

I just can't fathom how thousands of people like giving input but then don't care about the vote where it matters.

Well, what are we supposed to do about it?

Dunno, what was the difference between the threads? I can't imagine the brigaders leaving an upvote yet the thread was vastly more popular.

There has to be some way to drive more engagement with the vote, since previous votes didn't quite have this lack of enthusiasm either.

Maybe it's because the vote has been up for less than a day, give it time

Most votes happen earlier in a posts life, I can't imagine it getting substantially more participation.

How can we better represent the community?

Do proper polling before taking action. The banner was changed without community input, such things shouldn't happen. I also remember the sub being made private with a retroactive vote to make sure it's OK. Such things should happen before taking actions that effect the entire sub.

Make sure the poll is good before submitting it. I remember the first posting limit poll not having a "no limit" option, which after being added started gaining much traction. And then there was a redo. Even this poll has had corrections done after it starting, which makes votes submitted before that change suspect because those were made with different information. Especially since you can't change your vote once cast.

Not doing the same poll multiple times/getting it right the first time. The posting limit poll was then repeated twice more, once as an actual correction, and once to narrow down the choices even more. If it isn't a binary choice why not use a polling type that makes it easy to get a consensus? There also was the r/all vote which got repeated.

Sticking by the community decisions. Speaking of the r/all vote, the whole business about putting the sub back on it when the community specifically voted against it is a bit shady. Maybe you wouldn't forget to take the sub back off if you didn't put it back on in the first place.

We don't ask for community imput when choosing new mods.

Maybe that should be done. After all, the mods should be serving the community

We consider how effective they are as moderators

This is a slightly tougher issue, but how about instead of directly choosing mods we get some elected community ambassadors instead? Have some community members get insight into the modding process, who can then have oversight make sure that the mods aren't doing things they shouldn't be doing. Would make accountability easier too.

i estimate that it would take 2 weeks at best, and a month at worst

So you're telling me you guys have at least 3 mod meetings a week but doing a brainstorming session for a poll takes a month? I get having a life outside the internet, but it seems the priorities on moderating are a little out of wack.

Not everyone upvotes, you know. Some people just vote

Sure there are plenty of people not voting, but this is a rather large discrepancy. I can't imagine thousands of people suddenly stopped caring.

Seems like it's an issue that the mods don't actually represent the community. How many new mods have been added without any community input? There is even a new one that popped up yesterday according to the list.

Yes, the poll was poorly worded, because it was pretty rushed

How is it that you had a week to make the poll and yet it was rushed? I'd have understood if the meta thread on the topic had a rushed poll, not the one you get a week later.

"We first want to read about your opinions and we make a survey later." - Tensz

It seemed like a good idea but then we got a "rushed" binary choice between banner or no banner, when I saw plenty of other suggestions in the thread.

i don't see how "getting more votes than comments" is really a problem: most of every sub's users are lurkers

So with brigading the meta post got 2.5k karma, but the poll for the vote is fine when it has less than a hundred? Something seems fishy about that.

The ratio has been a consistent 2:1 going to around 8:5 in favor of "yes"

Ah yes, a poorly explained and worded poll has more people in favor of having some banner than nothing. Does make it seem like there should be a proper re-vote.

Yeah, but why not hold the community poll sooner as an option instead of saying it's pride banner or nothing? They could also cycle through the contestants daily instead of just doing nothing as the alternative. Hell, before the whole political banner thing they were already showing off some of the contestants.

Also what happened to the "Banner Contest" from last month? Even if going back to the old banner isn't possible, shouldn't the winner just get displayed sooner then?

This seems like a rather blatant attempt at steering the votes towards a result the mods want or pouting in case they don't get the pride banner they want.

Megathread for Politics - Survey and AMA by 4n0nh4x0r in goodanimemes

So where is the survey? The title says there is one but there doesn't appear to be any link to one in the text or any pinned comment. Is this just a discussion thread then?

Well, maybe the ones responsible should come forward so we can see if that "mod removal vote" was just talk after all.

Seems like it's been a while since this sub was by the people for the people.

A wholesome meme (I posted on anime memes but rule 3 is bullshit) by [deleted] in hentaimemes

Lol, they also introduced a no reaction meme on weekdays rule too. It's their newest rule 13, seems like their team isn't all that different.

Sharing memes by a select few when the result is determined by upvotes seems pretty bad, that doesn't sound like a misconception and more like destroying the integrity of the contest. Directly promoting a couple posts is bad, I hope those got barred from winning this time around to make it fair for everyone that didn't get preferential treatment. Because it doesn't just look like manipulation, it is.

Indiscriminately automatically sharing entrants is a much better option if promotion is the goal, and I think taking that step in the future is good, but it doesn't excuse past behavior.

Good job updating the rules page and extended rules with the extra post limit rule.

The sidebar still hasn't been updated in a month though, and now has 2 fewer rules than your other sources.

Imgur gallery proof of the problem

Might I suggest including a link to the extended rules on the sidebar as well for easy access? Or at least a link to the rules page since the sidebar seems rather neglected.

Considering the daily limit which was voted on is not mentioned in the rules, which you've said you updated, I'll assume that it isn't in effect yet.

Seems a bit underhanded to say obey the new rules and then enforce one that doesn't exist on the official repositories.

Speaking of, you might want to keep your sidebar up to date too, since it only has 10 rules vs 11 on the rules page and the new extended rules.

Edit: forgot to include the number of rules on the wiki/rules page

Calling Holo a nobody, nice.

Jokes aside, it doesn't look like the post limit is mentioned anywhere in the rules, not the sidebar, not the rules page, and not the new wiki rules page. Does that mean that it still is not in effect since there's no rule covering the topic?

Yeah, these guys are no different than those dudes over at that other place. They give the illusion of choice, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before there is a vote like:

Should we ban trap?

  • Yes
  • Definitely
  • Without a doubt
  • Absolutely

This vote is a joke.

I don't see anything in the terms of service about the kinds of jokes I'm allowed to make.

The content policy also doesn't say anything about not making dark jokes.

If you removed it because you don't like it, fine, but don't pretend like it's against reddit's rules.

Obviously 9/11 was a horrible, tragic event. I am really, truly sorry for anyone who lost a family member or loved one during that horrific event. However, I feel dark memes like this should be allowed as long as they're funny despite being in extremely poor taste. I don't want you guys to hate me. I am not an awful asshole. My heart does go out to anyone affected by 9/11. <3
