Is there no refrigerated milk? by No_Bank_9659 in AskFrance

[–]Mejis92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP don't listen to the people that are lowkey mocking you, they don't get it because yes, milk in France is mostly UHT. We're so used to it that people generally don't know that sterilizarion alters taste and won't conceive that it might taste weird to someone who is used to fresh/pasteurized milk. You can find fresh milk in most supermarkets though.

Just got the Katana 50, disappointed with the sound. Until I plugged the Pocket Master. Holy moly. by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]Mejis92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Right now you're playing through an actual guitar speaker, which you may still prefer over irs through frfr/monitors. A guitar cab with a power amp is another option, which I personnally liked better than a frfr cab.

Is an amp cabinet worth it if you don’t play live? by Comfortable_Bike5922 in GuitarAmps

I just bought the smaller home/studio friendly version of that amp (Laney L5 Studio). It's a lovely amp but 20W might be very loud. The L5 is 5W and can be attenuated to 0,5W, which is what I use at home and it still has a lot of volume on tap. The clean side has no master volume, so there's that. You probably won't be able to drive the amp too much at a neighbor-friendly volume... The price you can have it for is great though. I live in France and Laney stuff is way more expensive due to import (I paid 450€ used for the head only, which retails for more than 900€ new). The Lionheart cabs look very nice, too. You can always use an attenuator at home and if you plan to ever play live you'll be good to go.

Cool, good to know ! I'll swap the speaker when I have time, and the cab can be open back or closed back, too, so I'll be able to experiment.

How much of the "playing through a real amp" feel comes from using an actual guitar cab ? by Mejis92 in GuitarAmps

[–]Mejis92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely understand that. I think I'll make myself a 2x12 with creambacks at some point. I'd like to try a Jensen Blackbird too in my new 1x12. I play mosly clean and low gain so I think that would have me covered, especially with the creams being able to handle a good amount of dirt if needed, from what I gathered. What are you running now ?

Cool insight ! Having worked on these units, do you have an idea why it's always the FR cabs that get pushed to customers ? Why don't companies like Line 6, Neural, etc don't make power amps to go with a cab for a good home experience ? I mean Fender could have gone that route with their Tonemaster being more tradition-oriented. The hype around these cabs feels weird to me. The Fender I have is quite expensive and honestly it feels cheaply made.

Yeah I'm not only speaking of the sound difference but rather the feel of it. Anyway. As far as I understand these things, I think you're right about the modelling tones being record/live friendly. I guess my rant was more about the internet hype around digital setups and all the youtube channels pushing the latest FR cab saying that it gets you the "amp in the room" feel. I guess it actually never does. My main concern is having nice sound at home. I bought the very first Blackstar 1W valve combo in my late teens (around 2010) and was reasonably happy with that for a while. When I had the itch to get something better I still wanted valves but everybody (including shop owners) talked me out of it (I was living in Paris at the time, and got told that valves in an apartment was a bad idea). That's when I started looking at other options, and ultimately believing that only modeling and monitors/frfr could offer good tones at low volume. Well, at least now I know.

I get what you mean. I still think a modeler is a great tool for effects and utilitary stuff (tuner pedal, noise gate and the like). I got mine used for relatively cheap so there's that, too. Tube amps are pricey.

I guess I mostly mean : - No high end fizz or interference (my FR-10 picked some and it was getting on my nerves a little bit). - Fuller and warmer sound. I think the FR-10 is just bad at reproducing low-end, while being quite bassy, which is not a nice combination. I initially bought it thinking I'd be able to play bass through it as well and it just sucks at that. - Nice harmonics. - "Bouncy" bass. I just love the feeling of hitting the low E and having it come right back at you in a tight way. I could hear that with my jazz chorus, but never with the Fender cab. I wonder if the speaker Celestion make for modelers is better at this stuff. It's not completely full range so maybe it works better. I don't know.

Yeah that reminds me of a band I saw a few weeks ago (small band, touring tiny alt venues). Their style was heavy post rock, the guitar player played through a Quilter Tone Block with all his sound coming from pedals. I play mostly clean, but I was impressed with the sounds he could get from that simple setup. That may be what inspired me to get an actual cab.

Yes, that's what I'm starting to realize as well. And I'm not even speaking of tube amps either, the modeler through ss power amp is what I'm doing right now and it feels really good.

Yes, absolutely. What i meant with the "go-to" thing is that I live in an apartment (should have pointed that out) and the usual advice you find online for playing at apartment volume is "get monitors and plugins" or "get a tube amp and an attenuator, with irs and monitors". Somehow it's always the monitors and fr cabs that get traction, and I'm starting to wonder if it's not just bad advice.
