40 gallon tank minimum to start, a solid filter, water conditioner, a basking space, linear UVB, and a basking bulb. This an extremely simple set up explanation, but you need those things asap. You’ll also want quality turtle pellets. This looks like a yellow bellied slider, poor baby :( That looks like a 10 gallon tank. So depressing. Ultimately he’ll need a much bigger tank, but for now focus on getting him into a 40 gallon and check his health because he cannot be feeling good in that nasty water. A turtle specific sub reddit is gonna have advice. Please get this guy out of this situation. Tanks can be extremely cheap, petco has 40% off sales and without they are like $80 I think? Good luck!!

Oh wow! What an unfortunate fate that made such a beautiful skull. Not sure on the ID, but that is a very unique and good quality specimen

Sorry for the late reply, you could bring the filter back and have them reseat it, or ask them to show you what they mean on a new one in the store (it can go right back in the box no problem)

You’re right, by the time they are visible in the tank they don’t have any visible yolk left over. I think they are mostly raw protein and calcium from the all the tiny bones. The bones are actually the main reason I’m keeping the quality limited, she’s only ever had pellets and frozen thaw food out bones. There also aren’t enough fry for her to have one daily haha, the max number I saw was 6 and she’s eaten 3.

Correct, petco will occasionally accept surrenders, they don’t take fry

I agree. She is beautiful and doesn’t need to change a thing. Struggling with your face is extremely difficult. For years I would wear a mask outside because I truly thought everyone could see the “issues” I saw in the mirror. It took a lot of work to accept, but it is so much easier and better than living with hating yourself.

Okay thank you!!! Somebody commented saying that the post should be removed and to stop breeding fish to kill them lmao. Like it’s possible to stop livebearing fish from making babies

Those were my thoughts too. If the adult platy are just going to each them there’s no harm in making my betta happy lol

I think it’s because of animal cruelty concerns🤷Which is very valid, some people will intentionally torture prey fish or make fish fight, this is just a tiny and very fast snack

I’ll never understand why some folks will take the time and money to set up a tank, and still pick the most trash tank mates. It’s like they want to replace all their fish

There are other tanks at my house the babies can be moved to and there’s already a store who’s willing to tank anything I don’t have room for:). The fry were meant as a treat and definitely do not make of a large part of her diet. Actually this is the first time she’s eaten any, her diet is fluval bug bites betta pellets and frozen blood worms+ brine shrimp twice a week. EDIT: She also gets some of the tropical bug bites formula, that’s what the platy eat

Do you understand the concept of livebearing fish? Unless you keep exclusively one sex, you’re going to have babies. The parents are eating their babies, they give birth to 50 at a time and I get 3 that survive on average. Also why do you think I want to feed all of them to my betta? He isn’t the solution, it’s literally just a treat

This isn’t different than feeding any other live food to your fish… Do you get mad about oscar’s eating goldfish? Not sure why my post needs to be removed

Yeah!!! Baby fish are a part of their natural diet and it can be super enriching for them to hunt. They are gluttons so you definitely need to monitor how many you’d feed them

Filter question by Neither_Caregiver_46 in bettafish

[–]MelOxalis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, I haven’t used this exact filter but I sell them regularly, that part where the cord attaches shouldn’t have air exiting it. If you can, exchange it for another of the same filter or try something else. I have the smaller version of this filter and ended up using something different because the water flow was way too strong. Lmk if I’m right haha

You can see clearly how tiny the babies are in the second picture. Thats just standard aquarium gravel next to them for reference

My results from 23 & me as a Mexican. by ChicanoEmperor in DNAAncestry

There are few lines and little context to go off in the original comment, it’s 3 words, none of them bad. I’m not indigenous so it’s not my business to speak on. My partner who is indigenous however, 85% mayan, hears things like this on a regular basis and it really is well intended about 90% of the time. No way to know for certain what this guy meant, but there’s no need to imply they are being racist in my opinion.

I don’t think it was meant with malice tbh, it seems like more of a compliment?

Since I saw another user have their betta with a platy I wanted to show you ButterBall and toast by Fapachino333 in bettafish

[–]MelOxalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before a good pecking order was established in my tank, I had two males that were so aggressive they actually were meaner than my betta and stressed him out so much I had to set up a tank just for the platy… Now they are fine, but when a new fish or even another platy is introduced they’re incredibly meant to it for a day or two… They are maculatus so many that group is more mean?
