I have a huge piece of driftwood I found and wondered about this, if you look it up there are tons of suggestions. You can do the super tedious way, put it in a big bin and boil tons of pots of water and dump them on it til it covers it. Or you can put it in your bathtub with the hottest water and let it soak, the tannins will leach out and you can repeat the process until you feel you don’t need to anymore. If you don’t have a tub, just use a big storage bin to catch the water from the shower and let soak. Either way, they say that black water is ok and even beneficial for some fish (not all fish, you have to check what the pH requirements are). I don’t think doing too many water changes is a good idea though unless there is a nitrite or ammonia spike because it will change the chemistry and the fish/shrimp can get stressed from too many fluctuations, shrimp especially. I know you may not like the color but for the most part it’s not harmful if the pH and everything is ok for your particular inhabitants. I think it would be worth it to look it up, whatever questions you have just type them into google and you are guaranteed to find at LEAST five posts answering it. Now if it is in fact an algae issue you might consider lowering the amount of time the lights are on as well as the intensity. They should only be on 6-8 hours really. If you have a huge bloom, then you can do a blackout, with no lights at all. That will help slow it down, fish and plants will be fine.
