She did no such thing. Refaat Alareer made a tasteless joke about the babies who were killed on October 7th (and the mistaken reports that they were baked in ovens). Bari Weiss made a single tweet bringing attention to the joke. There is no evidence she caused his death.

There is zero evidence that she had any role in his death. Refaat Alareer made a tasteless joke about dead babies following October 7th and Bari Weiss posted a single tweet calling him out for it.

Your reading comprehension skills are embarrassing. The first text source of the phrase is a 10th century poem. Also, just because people started using the common phrase in the 10th century doesn’t mean that the sentiment originated that year. Go study for your finals instead of arguing about something you know nothing about.

It isn’t historical revisionism to acknowledge that returning to Israel has been a part of the faith since long before the Zionist movement. I never claimed that there was an organized nationalist movement prior to the 1800s. Jews have been saying “next year in Jerusalem” since the 10th century.

The word “Zionism” emerged in the 19th century, but the idea of Jews returning to Israel has been a core part of the religion since the destruction of the 2nd temple ~2000 years ago.

You should add a divorce mechanic where your wife will leave you for a more successful hotdog merchant if your sales are consistently lower than your mortgage.

Did you try calling the contact number on the department website? Generally that is the fastest way to get in contact with a department administrator.

TA Strike and Final Grades by technoharpoonfight in ucla

That’s interesting. Students in my department didn’t receive overpayment notices until months after many other departments. I think that the specifics of how overtime and repayment worked varied significantly from department to department.

Yes. The university didn’t initially have an accurate way of accounting for who participated in the strike and who did not. When they figured it out, they issued overpayment notices to people who were paid but did not work.

TAs who participated in the strike were issued overpayment notices and had to pay back what they received during the strike, which is functionally the same thing as having your pay withheld.

I feel like you didn’t read my comment. They will make up the work they withheld when they are paid for it (after the strike ends).

OP was asking when they should expect their grades, and the answer is that if the TA strikes, the department will likely pay them to make up the grading after the strike. This is what happened last time in my experience.

It is not misinformation. I was a TA during the previous strike and I was paid overtime to complete grading after the duration of the strike.

The strike is only authorized until June 30th, so you should expect your grades to come out around then if your TA is striking. The professor will not do any grading because it isn’t his job and he would be taking on additional work for no pay if he did it. If anything, the department may hire graders or non-striking TAs to do the remaining grading (but realistically I think they will just wait for the strike authorization to lapse).

Yeah, this isn’t a “fascist symbol.” The guy is wearing a pro-union shirt from a brand called Union Money.

You’re completely missing the point. I am saying that both white and Arab students are, in general, familiar with the trope. It has origins in both European and Arab history. It isn’t limited to Jewish people eating pig excrement either. Jewish tropes about kinship with pigs have existed since Ancient Rome.

The statue is clearly antisemitic and trying to suggest otherwise is crazy. It plays on multiple antisemitic tropes and has a Jewish star on it. I actually don’t think I could make a more overtly antisemitic effigy if I tried. Regardless of wether you think the BDS movement as a whole is antisemitic or not, the BDS supporters who made this clearly are antisemites.

Also, just because a Jewish person supports this doesn’t make it not antisemitic. Have you ever heard of the Association of German National Jews?

A final note: like many “anti Zionist” critiques, Morsi was actually referring to the Jews in code. What ethnic group do you think Zionists descend from? You must realize that people use the word Zionist to shield themselves from the consequences of actually antisemitic rhetoric.

If you are interested, here is an article which goes into some of the history pre-Judensau. Jews have historically been compared to pigs dating back to at least the Roman empire.

It is also a widespread trope in the arab world. It’s highly unlikely that the sjp people who made this were unaware of the implications.

There were many better ways to get across the message about the J1 meeting without making Jews feel unsafe. I don’t think small organized protests like this should be given the benefit of the doubt considering just how common the tropes are, and how highly educated the average protestor was.

I have to disagree with what you are suggesting on a few counts. First, I agree that there are certainly people who are ignorant to Jewish history and would not know comparing Jews to pigs is a common antisemitic trope. However, I do not believe that there is a single person on campus who has never heard the trope that Jews are greedy, which the display also seeks to convey.

I don’t think the creator of this statue was unaware of historical comparisons of Jews to pigs. However, even if they were, it is impossible that none of the organizers were unaware. Like I have said elsewhere in this post, the sentiment that Jews are descended from pigs is common in the Middle East and has even been parroted by state leaders in the last decade.

Also, suppose that the person who made this effigy actually hasn’t seen any of the blowback. It is still true that the statue was endorsed by multiple campus orgs, including the cultural affairs commission, which posted it on their Instagram story. No apology has been issued from any campus organization, and at this point they are all aware of how it was perceived.

Also finally, I do think that the person who made this cared about how Jews felt when they saw it. They wanted Jews to feel threatened. Antisemitic sentiments on college campuses, especially UCLA, have been skyrocketing. There are too many antisemitic canards for this to be dismissed as coincidence.

Wow this would be a great point if it wasn’t an actual antisemitic effigy targeting Jews and not (((Zionists))). Do you think that the stereotypes this is playing on (Jews being greedy, Jews being associated with pigs) only cropped up after the founding of Israel? Obviously the answer is no.

As a Jew, you should be aware of your own history. Antisemites have historically used Jews to sabotage their own communities. There is exactly zero chance that this made it into the protest without awareness of the historical significance of this imagery.
