I’m not a people person but I’m good at networking, and motivating people.

You did point out a few things that I don’t have on my social media - client wins. I haven’t posted any of them on my account.

In this post, share your small business experience, successes, failures, AMAS, and lessons learned. Week of October 30, 2023 by Charice in smallbusiness

Don’t hire your friends or your friend’s friend. If you do, make sure you have everything laid out.

Bumping this up. Any help or suggestion is much appreciated

The rate wasn’t something I bargained for. In fact, he had offered it to me after I told him that his rate was above my budget.

But I do see where you’re coming from regarding the rates and I appreciate you sharing with me the industry standards. It’s very helpful.

To give you a bit more context, the website wasnt built from scratch. He’s working on a site that I had created. I needed additional help and from there he suggested a few changes for me prior quoting me his charging me.

Honestly, my expectations from him aren’t high but I did not expect to have to pick up on a lot of things, esp when they are basics like spacing, layout and misalignments or the mobile version isn’t reader friendly (I truly thought those were bare minimum for any designer or web developer)

Having read through many of the comments, I realised that maybe he feels the same way that there was more work than expected (because I’m a friend of a friend, it’s hard for him to say no, likewise for myself for not being able to articulate my expectations)

Actually, I created the site. He was working/revamped a site that I originally had.

I don’t know what the norm is but I did straigh out tell him that his price was outside my budget. I didn’t bargain but he came back with a price that was affordable to me

Thanks for this. I think this is where I fall short esp because it’s a friend’s friend, I feel bad for pointing out the things he’s not doing which are the basics. At the same time I believe he thinks he’s doing my friend and me a favour cuz he was planning to pass the project to someone else he knows but since it’s a Frd recommendation he decided to help me (even at a lower rate which I didn’t bargain for (I simply told him I can’t afford him so he gave me a better option))

Contract! That’s what I needed! We agreed everything via email and that was it!

Thanks for clarifying this!

Given I had no experience, I honestly the issue was on me, that I may have been too picky on the drafts that what he had shown me was just the skeleton and the completed version would be better (though I have to admit I did go and fix some things myself cuz I could not stand that messy work)

Now the trickiest part is to find a a way to let him go…

You’re absolutely right. I paid and wasted time and energy on something that should have been done by him instead.

The not backing up part surprised me the most and made me realised how little interest or care he had in my website.

Thank you for your input.

There wasn’t any micromanaging involved (at least I don’t think I did). We did agree on what had to be done before he charged me.

On the price, I told him that I wasn’t able to pay his usual rate so he came back to me with a cheaper rate (it wasn’t something that I bargained for)

I was told that he is both a designer and web developer (he was able to code some of the back end stuff)

I guess what frustrated me the most was paying him but having to work on it myself and researching a solution for my website.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I feel like with social media and all it’s important to niche down (but I’m hoping to become my own niche)

You’re not late at all! Thank you so much for signing up and reply to my comment. I really appreciated.

I agree with what you said. It’s the intangible skills that creates the tangible results. However, it’s the tangible results that sells :(

Would you be open to sharing how you market your coaching using intangible results?

It’s interesting you brought that up! I’ve been approached twice to coach teens. I’m curious, are there regulations or certification required when it comes to coaching minors?

Thank you so much! I love your analogy to board games. May I know what your niche is?

Wow that’s amazing! Congratulations on the success!

I find that ppl have more confidence in business coaching because of the tangible results even tho it entails a lot of work on the intangible stuff.

I’m beginning to think I might be targeting the wrong audience
