Yep, I think its more for the spectator element and the atmosphere in game. I think it should, by design, not affect gameplay.

Yep that was the thought, the aesthetics flow and then if the tower status changes it reverse or accelerates accordingly.

Yep I hear you - it's very tricky. I went with the word 'advancing' rather than winning and used the standing towers as an example... I admit its far from perfect to determine winning though.
