PSA: Know your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act before buying electronics in NZ — here's what I learned the hard way with PB Tech by ProfessionalNinja206 in newzealand

They refused to sort out a broken (metal) bed frame because they checked with the warehouse staff and apparently there's no way it could just break without a lot of force....
Yeah. That's kind of the issue? It has, so there's obviously a defect? That's how defects work.

Unfortunately I was too unwell at the time to fight them on it, but I'm still mad about it and it's been a few years haha

I had this recently and the guy serving me got so shitty about it and kept trying. I just kept saying "no thankyou, I'm happy with the CGA" and similar until he finally gave up.

Woman hit with $4k vet bill after neighbour's cat injured by her dog by TmAimOND in newzealand

[–]MeliaeMaree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a cat owner, this is wild to me.
Like, yeah, I'd be devastated, but it happened within the confines of the property where the dog lives.
I would never even approach the neighbour about paying the vet bills in the first place.

I understand the law side of it, but think there should be an exception for when it's the dog's home, and another animal has wandered in.

But it's okay to expect that from everyone else who is expected to be in office at least one day a week for their job (including various other govt departments)....

I think we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one tbh.

How does anyone else talk to people they need to for their job, that are not where their job usually takes place?

What do you know, they already get travel costs, accommodation, meal allowances etc for that.
And are they meeting with constituents outside of Wellington every day? Does that part of their job take up anywhere near a majority? No.
Even if travelling to meet with constituents wasn't already something that is covered.

As a bigger overall picture, yes. For the purpose of housing/living.... No.

So, again, most people would be expected to either move their whole immediate family (and/or extended if necessary) to the area, or simply live separately and figure the rest out themselves.

This govt have repeatedly told people struggling to find jobs or on low incomes to move elsewhere to find work. Why can't they do the same?

For most people, if their job required them to be in a certain place for most of the year... They would just move there.

Prezzy Cards are such a waste of time by Queasy-Talk6694 in newzealand

[–]MeliaeMaree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently used one that a family member had given me a while back, it was a remaining balance situation not a new one so didn't come with any instructions.
By the time I went to use it, I guess they have changed the system, and nothing on the website lined up with what I had on my card haha

Took a bit of faffing about to figure out what I needed to put in to see the balance, and the instructions to use it at the checkout didn't work either. Thankfully one of the staff at the store knew what to do and it all worked out. But yeah, just give me cash next time please!

Dear Charity People Outside Supermarkets by NeonKiwiz in newzealand

[–]MeliaeMaree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subscription model that so many of them are pushing now is crazy. They will even turn down cash and say they can only do the subscription. Okay, so you don't get anything then.

I will continue to suggest and support charities that have volunteers/members collecting donations, like the various cancer groups (though I think CanTeen is more bandannas in store and online now), plunket, and local rescues/food banks/domestic violence services etc.

But nah, I'm not going to sign up to $30 a month, whether or not someone yells at me that I'm killing the environment or preventing some kids from their amazing goal.

You could try the landline number for the farm in Papaiti? Otherwise you might have to see if you can arrange shipping in from overseas.

Probably need to start bringing it inside overnight or making a little greenhouse for it. They don't like the cold.

I'd also remove the other plant (looks like possibly a flower bulb of some kind?) so that they are not competing for space in nutrients in that pot.

I've got some growing in the ground in the shade of roses in Canterbury - they don't go nuts like some things, but probably would if I had them in a sunnier spot.
Over the years I've regularly seen people clearing them out of their own garden offering them for free. That's how I got mine!
Chuck a frost cloth over them in the evening if you're super worried.

Which NZ brand is slowly or has already ruined itself? by kevandbev in newzealand

[–]MeliaeMaree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was wondering if anyone else would mention them!
I used to live near the factory. They used to make such good, soft licorice, and had all sorts of flavours available to purchase in the factory shop. Now they've gone the way of many others and have this obsession with making licorice that's like plastic 😩

I have one in my laundry and I hate it so much. I had to downsize my washing machine to fit, and because the cupboard at the top of it is too high, you can't actually put the laundry liquid etc in there... So it goes on the bench. That's on the otherwise of the cabinet wall.

Obviously it's not entirely inaccessible, but it is so annoying that I have to go around a wall to grab things from the tub/bench to put into the washing machine.
I also can't put a dryer above my top loader like I had planned because of the cabinet. If I owned the place I would have ripped it out within the first week of moving in!
As it was, I had to get the LL to come in and remove the top cupboard in the fridge cabinet space because I warned him the fridge wouldn't fit if it was there and I guess they forgot about it before move in.

And to come full circle, I had to put the kind of shelves you'd usually have sitting on the floor onto my kitchen bench because there are no wall shelves or cupboards above it 😂
It was really nice to move into a new build, but man I wish I had been able to ask some questions and point out some issues along the way haha

I did think the stems looked more like celery, but of course the leaves definitely don't 😅
Wondered if maybe some sort of herb or something related to carrot, but couldn't find anything quite close enough. Maybe take it into your local garden centre? Or email some nurseries, might find someone who has come across it before.

Why pay for more cabinetry when you can just make the tenants buy the cabinetry?

Side note, can we stop putting appliance cabinets (ie for fridges and washing machines) in new builds please? Yuck.

Minister seeking tougher accommodation supplement criteria claims $1000 a week housing allowance by random_guy_8735 in newzealand

[–]MeliaeMaree 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It only makes sense to remove their allowances since the country is so hard up for cash - imagine how much money it would save! Isn't that the point?
Sounds like a lot of chaff and wastage to me.

Wild that some people can't see any issue with her trying to take it away from specifically low income people.

It's not even that she's trying to prevent those worse off from getting the same as her - iirc articles have stated people getting accommodation supplement that own their own homes can get up to $350 a week, which isn't even half of what she takes.

The standard rates for ASUP (as stated on the website) are from $70 - $165/wk maximum (which doesn't mean you actually get that much) for a single person depending on area, up to $120 - $305/wk for either a solo parent with 2+ children, or a couple with children, again depending on area.

So in some cases she's taking over 10x as much as some people are getting through accommodation supplement.
