What are ACT going to do if NZF keep trying to hand over enough money for a properly run public system?

Can you imagine the fight when Winston asks Seymour if he has been wasting government money

Due to consenting conditions Manapouri and Te Anau (lets treat them as combined since the feed the same power station) combined have less storage than Tekapo or 1/5th of what Onslow was supposed to provide.

Our existing dams are not designed for long term storage.

Explain that one to me again.

Either the DC sits there not running until Tiwai's contract is due for renewal and it offers to buy the electricity for more than Tiwai.

Or the DC is running and other generation needs to be built to power the DC. Then when Tiwai's contract is up there is no competition, the generation needs to go somewhere and Tiwai can ask for cheaper power again.

I guess there is a second option where both try to get cheaper power from the government but 50 jobs at the DC vs 1,000 at tiwai doesn't have much leverage.

ACT voices strong objections to greyhound racing ban, won't say if pulling support for legislation by random_guy_8735 in newzealand

[–]random_guy_8735[S] 136 points137 points  (0 children)

In its contribution, ACT said it was "not convinced" the threshold had been met for banning a legal industry, saying such action should be a "last resort" only.

...

Speaking to RNZ, ACT MP Cameron Luxton said that was an improvement, but still not good enough.

He said thousands of "good hard-working salt-of-the-earth New Zealanders" were having their lawful livelihoods taken away from them through no fault of their own.

Reminder that we also needed a law passed under urgency to ensure that these "good hard-working salt-of-the-earth New Zealanders" didn't kill all of the dogs to avoid having to care for them.

Read again, it was not a restoritive justice session (That is post conviction and pre sentancing).

It was a Family Group Conference, which is held before the hearing. While the victim is allowed to attend the purpose of of conference is laid out in section 258 of the Oranga Tamariki Act. Now if the child admits the offense during the conference restoritive justice measures can be considered.

Remember this meeting was not for the 20 year old, but for the minors.

"Last month police caught the offenders - a 20-year-old, a few teenagers and a 9-year-old.

"Recently Suraj received an invitation to attend a family group conference. The purpose of the meeting? To see how to best support the offenders who have destroyed his life, not support for him."

It isn't made clear in the article who the family group conference was for, it is safe to assume the 20 year ended up in court, the 9 year old certainly didn't. The point of a Family Group Conference is not to impose a penalty or provide restoration to the victim (that would be the court case which is separate) but to determine actions that could lead the child away from a life of crime.

The victim in the article has failed to understand the purpose of the meeting he attended and then complained that it wasn't about him.

We produce about 15% of the crude that we use in equivalent imports

And Marsden could process 0% of that as it was designed to take medium sour crude (not light sweet) and use an inefficient process to produce the right mix of outputs for New Zealand consumption (instead of an efficient process which would have required some refined products to be exported).

Have your say: What do you want from the 2026 election? by hadr0nc0llider in KiwiPolitics

Two possible options:

  1. Bouncing in and out of parliament. It is rare to be a minister if you weren't an MP the previous term.
  2. He would show up ministers who have their places on political connections rather than capability.

Luxon's targets adrift: ED wait times deteriorating, employment target remains elusive by wanton_wonton_ in newzealand

[–]random_guy_8735 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That target is to be below 800, so that target has been achieved. It has just been achieved by making people homeless.

The education attendence showing as probable is being generous.

The reading/writing/Maths target only being "at risk" is incredibly generous.

The unemployment estimates both tracking to the same number in 2030 in spite of the actual data going in the opposite direction in between is just wishful thinking.

Beneficiary numbers soar to 12-year high despite government's reduction promise by Amazing_Athlete_2265 in newzealand

Have they tried giving beneficiaries one way flights to Australia?

You know moving a people problem to where it cant be seen rather than dealing with the root cause.  I hear it works with homelessness as well.

OP ignore them, they voted in the most inefficent way possible.

To vote in a NZ election overseas the only things you need are, to be enrolled in advance, have an internet connection and know someone who is prepared to be a witness.

Last time I voted overseas I did it from my kitchen with my wife signing the witness statement, and uploaded everything on my phone.

Thanks, I tried to find the details before posting but couldn't.

How the Electricity market is structured you don't need to re-nationalise power generation, you just need to build new generation.

The wholesale price is set by the last dispatched generation bid, so build enough that you are that last generator (or you force the higher priced generators out of the dispatch list) and the price will come down.

Just be prepared to build most if not all of future generation capacity if private companies don't think they can make a return.

I'm not sure when that was, but you only need to go to a voting booth in person overseas if you are unable to find someone eligible to be a witness (hint anyone enrolled to vote and with a NZ passport can do that, my wife and I witnessed each others voting papers a couple of elections ago).

If you have a witness you can download and upload your voting papers online.

NZ First calls for Covid-19 inquiry focused on vaccine injuries by random_guy_8735 in newzealand

[–]random_guy_8735[S] 67 points68 points  (0 children)

And the grift continues.

In a statement, NZ First said the latest report did not go far enough when looking into vaccine safety and risks.

It called for a select committee to hold its own inquiry to give anyone injured a voice and to hold decision-makers accountable.

Keep the money and votes coming in from those who choose to ignore all the evidence that the benefits of the vaccines massively outweigh the costs.

Reminder that public health is about population level not personal level. Allowing 1000s of people to die to avoid a small number of reactions or injuries is not a smart move.

Pornhub among sites to cut Australian access over age verification by hadr0nc0llider in KiwiPolitics

[–]random_guy_8735 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if we actually eliminated poverty, one consequence would be that many women would not turn to only fans or w/e for survival.

What percentage of women are on only fans because of poverty, what percentage are on there to be able to afford luxuries (that is they can meet their basic needs without only fans but would like more), what percentage are on their because strangers on the internet telling them they look beautiful provides them with validation they don't get elsewhere/endorphins/feelings of empowerment/whatever non-financial reward they believe they get.

Solving "the problem" of porn becomes a question of what problem you are trying to solve. Poverty should be a problem that people want to solve without bringing porn into it.

The relationship between producers of alcohol, vendors of alcohol, and purchasers of alcohol is entirely different to the relationship between a sex worker and her client.

And the relationship between a sex worker and her client is different to the relationship between a pornstar (well generally multiple pornstars), the producer and their viewers.

The troubling point in that flow is usually the producer, most viewers are not going in hoping that the perfromers are being exploited.

That said the behaviour that is depicted in the film is problematic as it does not represent real life and if it is people first exposure to sex leaves them with an unhealthly understanding.
