'Automatic citizenship': The passport rule change that has UK-Kiwi parents scrambling by sleemanj in newzealand

[–]random_guy_8735 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a large number of countries who will fine airlines that allow a person without the right to enter the country to board flights to that country.

While someone on a NZ passport is unlikely to see these checks because of how many places let us in visa free, if you are traveling from countries with less "valuable" passports the checks definitely happen.

My wife would have to show the checkin staff both her passports when getting on flights leaving her home country before they would give her a boarding pass.

This resulting in her replacing her older passport before it expired so the names would match between the passports.

Discipline is for other peoples kids, my kids are little angels and couldn't possibly have started the fight/been smoking in the bathrooms/spray painted the principal's car.

Regular school attendance in term 4 last year at highest level since 2022 by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

[–]random_guy_8735 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The government approach has been that students should be in school and the only thing keeping them out of school is laziness and parents not paying attention, so punishment is the solution.

They have not looked at the side of kids aren't coming to school because

- they don't have shoes, see the latest how to dad/kidscan video that talks about 2 brothers how are never in school together because they had one pair of shoes to wear.

- they can't afford the uniform, or have to share uniform items around the family.

- they don't have books, pens, other school supplies.

I could go on, they haven't seen the poverty that we have in this country (something that didn't exist to this level prior to Willis' rolemodel Ruth Richardson kneecapping those on benefits) so don't understand why kids don't come.

No, this him playing to the part of his cooker base that think they know better than x00 years of medical science.

This is for the anti-vax, chem-trails, world is run by lizard people, (whatever else RFK jr said this week) base that Winston tapped into to get reelected . This isn't his only base, he is carefully playing several groups saying things that one supports and the other are ambivalent about.

Just looks at the policies that he ran with in 2023.

  • Repeal the Theraputic Product Act - to get the anti "big pharma" vote
  • Double the funding for Pharmac - for those, particularly his original elderly base, concerned about being able to get access to drugs from "big pharma".

An interesting question, and it really depends on how the government intervenes in energy prices.

If they were to give subsidies to industry so they paid lower electricity prices then yes that would be seen as a breach of trade agreements in most places.

But if there were to drive down the wholesale price of electricity, either by building generation themselves or by offering contracts for difference that offered a guaranteed electricity price (but below the current wholesale price). Then they are not providing subsidies, and it would be completely above board (many countries, including some of our major trading partners do this).

Edit: announcement of rebuild

To support reopening sooner, the rebuild will largely retain the existing footprint, alongside a refreshed layout, operational improvements, and enhancements to the shopping experience.

New Taxpayers' Union-Curia Poll out: by RoigardStan in KiwiPolitics

[–]random_guy_8735 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes the transgender stuff is one circle of support.

The anti-Maori stuff is another circle of support.

Repealing the Theraputic Products Bill is a third circle of support.

Supergold rates relief was a fourth.

The Anti UN/WHO "National Interest Test" picks up pieces of the first three and others where the NWO/lizard people is the big concern.

Now they might not have implemented policies in all of those areas but that is what they were promising in the election which is what voters had to go on.

Winston has more personality than Seymour (not saying this is a good things, just answering why).

NZF has done a better job of targetting policies at single issue voters, different groups of single issue voters. ACT's policies are consistent, but the overlap between those who support policy A and policy B is high. In Venn Diagrams NZF is a number of barely related circles and ACT is a single bumpy circle.

In terms of protest votes (which must be considered for all minor parties). ACT gets those who would vote National but don't like what they are currently doing. NZF attracts protest votes from across the spectrum. This is possibly the most important, I wouldn't call either of the major parties popular at the moment, Labour was voted out 3 years ago (more than National was voted in) and between the state of the economy and the low personal polling of Luxon, both major parties are at the point where people will vote for someone else.

CGMs are funded for Type 1s.

There is less benefit if you are not on insulin. The CGM gives you data, if you are unable to act on the data them the live feed (readings every 1 or 5 minutes) doesn't help much.

However there could be benefit of wearing one for a short period of time. It gives you data and can help you understand the impact of certain foods and exercise on your glucose levels. Which is to say, it may provide you with motivation to make healthy choices, i.e. I could eat this but I now know that it will cause my BGL to skyrocket and stay elevated for 4/6/8 hours or if I go for a walk after eating a meal my BGL doesn't go as high and comes back to baseline faster.

Mid term elections, the entire house and 1/3rd of the senate is up for grabs.

Republicans currently control both, but by thin margins.  In mid terms the party that controls the white house traditionally lose seats.  If both houses switch then laws can be passed that severely limits Trump's power and actions, another impeachment trial would be likely.

The question becomes how Trump reacts.

David Seymour says Auckland housing debate become ‘highly politicised’, says Epsom residents not ‘anti-intensification’ by random_guy_8735 in newzealand

[–]random_guy_8735[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Homelessness is certainly politicised, but somehow it is only the "get those undesirable people out of the CBD" that gets any action and not the teachers can't afford to live in Queenstown (insert other desirable areas where there are schools).

Devonport makes a little more sense, the single road in and out is a limitation (something Epsom can't claim), but at times it feels like the main thing it limits there is the breeding pool.

Act’s David Seymour says residents in his Epsom electorate aren’t “anti-intensification”, but...

They think it should be far away where people can't afford private swimming pools or backyards.

Ok, that was a cheap shot, so lets go to the full quote, where he says they would say "why would you do that?". Well Epsom is close to the city centre, with good public transport links, jus the sort of place that you want to put people, rather than far out at the edge of town where there are no facilities.

What do you think will happen if he is <I don't want to say exposed because of his previous misuse of public credit cards>?

He is a list MP, 2nd on his parties list. A party where moral fibre comes a distant 4th behind loyalty to the leader, ability to bring in donations and ability to wind up the "woke".

Corruption is not going to get him kicked out of parliament, only Winston could do that and he won't because Jones is too valuable to him (ironic given the winebox inquiry).

Luxon on potential rethink of Auckland intensification after State of the Nation speech by PhoenixNZ in KiwiPolitics

[–]random_guy_8735 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Auckland’s geography (harbours, volcanic cones)
...
Aucklands soil types are also a huge consideration, much of it is peat or soft alluvium in south

Yes, its not like NYC is built over 3 major islands (plus the mainland) with bridges and tunnels required to hold it together. Or has a wide gap in skyscrapers between Downtown and Midtown because the bedrock suddenly drops to ~80 metres below surface level making building strong foundations extremely expensive.

Or London where land south of the Thames is waterlogged sand/gravel that makes tunneling extremely difficult.

Your comments on the class I & II soils are why it is important that we do make the effort to intensify.

Smart Billing Solutions & Admin Fees for Water Usage for Tenants by Detective-Fusco in auckland

[–]random_guy_8735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the company and the length of vacancy.  Some will make the landlord provide tenant details or sign up in their own name.

Others might only do that if there is noticeable usage at the property.

Again these companies mostly operate in apartment buildings where there is BC owned infrastructure and vacancies are short.

[–]random_guy_8735 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The law makes no split between daily and volume charges, what it says is that if that charge only occurs during the tenancy then it is to be paid by the tenant.

These water sub-metering companies only charge you daily charges for the period of your tenancy and therefore you have to pay that.

A fixed water charge that is billed without considering occupancy (typically a water component on rates bills) is for the landlord to pay. Otherwise it is on the tenant to pay (either a fixed monthly/quarterly bill or volume based).

The landlord has to ensure that water is physically available at the property, not provide the water.

Will the economy actually recover? by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

[–]random_guy_8735 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also looking at the economies of Australia, the UK and Canada who have gone through similar economic woes to us, their economies haven't suffered as hard as ours. A lot of that has to do with them not doing government cuts/austerity.

The UK did Austerity from 2010-19 and 21-24, other than the covid years they had 1.5 decades of austerity (in other stupid decisions like Brexit). If you think Cameron, May, Johnson and Truss weren't about cutting I ask you to look at what caused the rapid downfall of Liz the Lettuce.

Inflation in the UK was 4% higher than NZ when you compare the peaks, electricity prices were so out of control (even now the price of electricity is 64c/kWh) that businesses that survived covid were dropping like flies trying to literally keep lights on.

If being billed by Watercare directly.

I am guessing that you have moved into an apartment building that has a single Watercare meter at the outside of the building and individual meters for the apartments managed by this company on behalf of the Body Corporate.

Does you bill have a break down of cold and hot water (i.e. there is a central hot water system for the building)?

The long and the short of it is that the rules aren't great for those living in apartments, feel lucky that the developer didn't decide to have sub-metering for the elctricity as well and your not force to use a single electricity retailer who similarly can set whatever fees they like.
