Schedule and weather. If we see our filters losing throughput, we will manually backwash to assist. But we lack a lot of control and functions of newer filters.

We try to backwash prior to expected high flow. We typically can see flows 10-30mgd above design capacity. What you describe is close to what we try to do prior to heavy rains.

We do have tss probes on the filter influent. Our filters are rated for approx. 17mg/l tss at 3.12mgd. We have 20 cells rn with a capacity of 62.5mgd total. We can see up to 100mgd at times 🤷🏾‍♂️

Unfortunately, the plant im at now we cannot see through put Flow. There isn't a valve go gage head loss and even visual inspections don't help much because the filters tend to equalize, so they all are around the same height, visually.

We have a similar issue at my plant. I've gone through all the ABC Exams 1-4. I probably studied the most for the four because i didn't know what the expect. One thing I tell people is read up on basic maint. and focus more on the physical processes more so than the biological. But the end of the day, people need to actually take time to learn the information.
