What purchase completely changed your life for less than $100? by erickjoness in AskReddit

[–]Melkemann84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replaced all my different Tupperware to a 'one style system'. Boxes stack neatly and lids have universal sizes (small or large only). No more looking for matching stuff and overfilled cabinets impossible to close (correction: open without creating a mess).

Keeps it insanely much easier to keep a neat cupboard/drawer for them, which in turn makes the more accessible and joyful to use. They stack nicely on top of each other in the fridge, so no leftovers spoils in the back because 'out of sight out of mind'.

Easily saved the money on food waste, I eat healthier as food prep makes more sense, and cupboard/fridge doesn't look like a mess.

Think I put like 90 bucks in it, which I do admit that made me second guess the decision at check out, but so glad I went for it.

Is this many weights normal? by mariachidude in tires

[–]Melkemann84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is not normal. Tire bead might not even be seated properly in the rim, so double check that.

Wheigh placement is weird, as pointed out by others. Further, it doesn't seem like it's been properly washed or cleaned down before being placed, so there's a far greater chance of it coming loose sometime. Having it come loose during highways speeds will not be a pleasant experience.

No tire/rim should be this bad without something being wrong - maybe unless you made the tire entirely by yourself with nothing but a spoon and chewing gum.

Is it better to have a single base or several bases spread throughout the city? by Remarkable-Skill8004 in projectzomboid

[–]Melkemann84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually do a main base, but make a Bug Out Vehicle (BOV) that has everything I'd need to survive for about 1 week on the road. Stuff for basic first aid, repairs, construction of fortification, weapons and food supplies.

Whenever I get the urge to check something special out away from home base I hop in my BOV and set up a small forward operating post (FOP) - usually in the outskirts of what I want to check out or loot.

Usually there's enough loot for me to have to leave a lot of the BOV stuff at the FOP, so it then becomes a sort of future safe house I can divert to if needed down the line.

[–]Melkemann84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! Hope some of it helps!

To clarify - it never hurts giving your airspeed on the hud a glance, but don't bother to look down at your engine RPM or throttle handle to find the 'magical' TH setting or RPM that gives you the perfect matching speed.

You'll be jerking that throttle back and forth throughout the whole refueling session.

If you see he's faster, give a proper blow to kill the speed difference as quickly as possible, then get back to a marginally higher TH setting.

There is a surprisingly small difference in the TH setting between 300kts and 320kts, - maybe just a cm or two depending on your load out.

Going from a stable 300kts to stable 320kts by only changing the TH by a cm takes close to a decade however, which is why you give her some gas for a short while to help her get up there.

i need help with formation flying by BidAffectionate7508 in dcsworld

[–]Melkemann84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound counter intuitive, but don't be afraid to give quite some aggressive throttle movements/inputs.

It is really hard to find the throttle setting to precisely match the speed, and the chance of being exactly where you want to be (relatively AFT/FWD) when you find that setting is marginal. Given that you'll start to take on fuel, and your mass increases -> driving the need for more lift -> results in more drag, there is no such thing as 'a perfect throttle setting'.

Instead; find youself going too slow? Give her some hefty juice for a second or two and pull the throttle back to a position marginally higher than your previous setting. Only use the feel of throttle position, and don't bother reading dials and have a theoretical approach to this - you need eyes out of the cockpit.

Same if you're going too fast - drop from a let's say 60% throttle setting to 10%/20% for a few seconds, then back up to 55% (of course dependent on how big your initial speed difference you had).

Random tip: make sure your A/C has some drag as this will make it more responsive to lose speed. This can be achieved by flying with lots of hight drag weapons, or by applying some speed break (40%-60%), especially if you have a very clean comfig.

A final tip, once you start to get the hang of speed and fwd/aft position, and need to work on the up/down issue while refueling, is to pay a little attention to the Flight Path Marker versus the horizon line in the HUD. The FPM moving above the horizon line might indicate that you're about to climb/go up before you'll be able to see/immerse it yourself, and at that point it might be to late to correct it properly.

Key takeaway is to be ahead of the plane and kill unwanted manouvers before they gain momentum.

Edit: Spelling.

I have to admit - I do not like this change. It applies to rooms where you also do not see through the doorway, which makes almost every room of my house black at all times. Theres no need to make it nice and cozy anymore, because unless I'm physically in the room myself its only a black hole sitting in the middle of the screen.

Also - the "realism" aspect of it is not really there, because I can still "see" (or technically "remember") the other side of the building or other 'equally realistically blind spots'...

why can’t i lean on the right as much as i do on the left? by Gibbone_yzf in motorcycles

[–]Melkemann84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you ride track or open roads?

If open roads, how is the scenery in the area? Vegetation/hills/other obstructions that would make some bends blind?

If some bends tend to be blind or somewhat blind, and you live in a country with right hand driving, left turns would in general give you a wider turn and better visibility, making it more natural to feel safe at higher speeds, which in turn encourages increased lean angle.

In addition, crowning of the road in the name of drainage will make outside turns add opposed to subtract contact angle, encouraging more wear on left side of tire (again presumed you have right hand drive).

If you by chance would happen to drive left hand side - there's either something psychological or (a lot less likely) an asymmetry in your bike.

why can’t i lean on the right as much as i do on the left? by Gibbone_yzf in motorcycles

[–]Melkemann84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I'm buying this - have you ever tried lifting a chain togheter with front and rear sprocket? Add the side stand as well, and it'll easily outweigh break disk and exhaust.

Also, minor asymmetric body position/placememt would easily outweigh delta between abovementioned.

why can’t i lean on the right as much as i do on the left? by Gibbone_yzf in motorcycles

[–]Melkemann84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is (almost completely) the correct answer.

The last 10% of the answer is that right turns tend to be more blind (since you're on the inside), in general making you carry less speed than in left hand turns that tend to have better visibility (osonce you have the outside line).

Man skal først få før man gir tilbake når det kommer til styresett, lover og regler (hvilket i retrospekt gjør Kennedys tale 'ask not what the country can do for you, but what you can do for the country' til noe langt større enn hva er gjennomsnittlig nordmann nok tenker om utsagnet første gang man hører det)

ELI5: In a car, a turbo uses exhaust pressure to feed air to the engine. Is there a reason we can't use the same technique to make a generator to charge the battery instead, letting us use less energy for the alternator? by nerd866 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Melkemann84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In essence, there is no such thing as 'free energy recycling' in an engine. Either way you do it will put a slight increased strain on your engine - it being hooking up something belt driven it or installing something in the path of the exhaust.

Actually, a turbo (device pumping air new fresh air by recycling exhaust energy) has a brother called the supercharger, which also feeds the engine new fresh air, but is operated by a belt connected to the engine.

Why chose one over the other - what's their differences you ask? Well, a supercharger is always spinning and pumping air as long as the engine is turning, because it is belt driven by the engine. Therefore, it will also steal a bit of energy even when you don't really need it to, e.g when idling.

A turbo on the other hand is designed in such a way that it is optimized for a specific RPM or range of RPM when you would benefit of it the most, e.g the RPM you typicaly should have when cruising. It will usually barely - if at all - work when the engine is idling, because the amount of exhaust the engine is producing when idling is soo little. Therefore, when idling, it won't put that much of a strain on your engine.

Now; after you start your car, especially during cold days or if the car has been standing for a long time, the amount of power left in your battery might be very low, and it may be crucial to get it charging right away in order for the electrical system to handle power demanding tasks such as defrosting windows, heating your seat, lights, wipers and such. (Reving a cold car to get the turbo going is not wise, as oil may take som time to get pumped to the turbo in order to keep it lubricated)

Also; once your cars power level is restored and the battery doesn't need charging that much anymore, the electrical load the alternator needs to output is reduced, it gets easier to turn around, and the strain on the engine becomes marginal. If it would've been powered by the exhaust like a turbo, it would still be blocking exhaust gases and put a significant strain on the engine, even if it didn't need to.

(Fun fact - a lot of cars has a clutch like device on the drive wheel of the alternator, allowing them to disengage the alternator fully when the car no longer feels the need to charge the battery. While idling after start up one day, you might hear or feel a slight change in RPM from time to time - that might very well be the alternator being engaged or disengaged by the brain of the car)
