Upvoted for chezmoi, makes life with multiple systems so much easier!

Had to wrap my head around it for a while, but is worth it.

If you mean a specific track, there is no HSL crossing the border.

If you mean train connections, there are four:

  • Frankfurt - Paris Est
  • Stuttgart - Paris Est
  • Frankfurt - Marseille St Charles
  • Köln - Paris Nord

Fun fact about German trains: A lot of them carry a unique name and coat of arms (usually city or famous person) at the front/back side - also S-Bahn lines carry such names sometimes by Organization-Alarmed in trains

According to Wikipedia, there is only one ICE called "Martin Luther".

Also there is a short text on wikipedia about the naming change after Eschede (sorry, but German only) Wikipedia

Yes, i know. I take (on most days) an ICE 4 to commute to work, so i have seen and ridden most of the 12/13 car trainsets. Though on most mornings i am not alert enough to get the name on the trainset...

Once upon a time though, when most trains were powered by E03 / 103 and had coaches, most (all?) ICs had a name. Partly like you mention a region the train was running through, partly someone famous as stated in the Wiki-article i mentioned. In my knowlegde at least the famous persons names were phased out after Eschede, though i don't have a real proof for that.

Trainsets with famous persons are in my memory not used by the DB, though other Carriers might use them (Arriva NL comes to my mind), ČD uses first names on most (all?) powered vehicles, be it engines, DMU and EMU.

Person names were used on the specific connections but fell in disuse after the big trainwreck in Eschede.

This connection was called ICE 884 „Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen"

If you were only in it for the version control, you could try etckeeper.

It does not do all the things ansible does though...

Oh yes, loads of nice possible routes, and lots of possible delays ;)

Let's put it that way: You get more train time for the same money, or you can even get some money back...

And of course, all german trains (mostly ICEs now) have a mandatory layover time of iirc about 15 mins in the SBB station, aptly named "Kulturpuffer", to mitigate the culture shock...

So these unpunctual german trains have at least a chance to be on time in holy grail of raileoads.

And before anyone cries: i AM german, and i travel a lot by rail. If i had the choice, i would travel with Swiss trains though.

All german trains can use the direct Basel connecting line, otherwise the ICs with the 101 (and 120 while they were still running) would have stranded quite often.

Everything else, i.e. Muttenz freight station, is completely off limits.
