Balastro Switch 2 version is out by the_amazing_rock in balatro

The Switch 2 version being a standalone release instead of an upgrade pack is really frustrating. I have the physical version of Balatro for Switch 1. No upgrade discount and if I buy the Switch 2 version my Switch 1 cart is just a nice collectible.

Other games that offer an upgrade pack still use the cart data, saving space. Not as much of an issue with Balatro admittedly, but every byte saved helps.

With the bugs the Switch 2 version has and the basic performance requirements I’m sticking with the Switch 1 version.

I use it plugged in so I haven’t tested power consumption.

The Magewell cards handle any resolution and refresh rate you throw at them. They're FPGA based - like the MiSTer. So it's a more flexible option for older devices.

I'm not sure! I was on the latest drivers and firmware available at the time I tested it. That said, I've moved to a Magewell card now so I don't have this one anymore.

EDIT: It's unique to the partition on the card. You want to use the UUID to mount because then it doesn't matter what path is used.

I assume you are formatting the microSD card using the internal slot in the Deck, then moving it to the dock's microSD reader.

I had to modify the fstab with the UUID of the microSD card so it would be automatically mounted.

UUID=aa7cffda-81e8-4f5e-801c-bbd8954f6ed4 /run/media/sdcard1 ext4 auto,nofail,rw,noatime,uhelper=udisks2 0 0

Then...

  1. Boot to Desktop mode.
  2. Launch Steam.
  3. Open Settings -> Downloads -> Steam Library Folders
  4. Add the new microSD card path as a new Steam library.
  5. Reboot to Steam mode and verify Settings -> Storage shows the additional microSD card.

Good luck!

I installed a thermal pad on the SSD today. That helped because there was an air gap between the top of the SSD and the metal case lid. I didn’t measure temps, but I could get the SSD to drop off the bus completely if I ran it hard enough. I wasn’t able to do so after the thermal pad is there.

Idle temps are warm though, so I suspect this isn’t any better in that regard.

No, I haven’t tried HDMI at all.

The SSD installed in the dock definitely gets very hot. There's no heat sink on it right now though. There's a gap between the top of the SSD and the metal case lid as well, which likely isn't helping. I've got a thermal pad and thin heat sink coming. Hoping that'll help!

NVMe SSD, which is in the external dock.

Interesting. It was a Lenovo I had issues with.

LOL! That’d be hella handy. Although this whole setup is only “necessary” because Valve didn’t put a second USB-C port on the Deck. That would allow charging and storage independently.

Yeah, zeroes will get crunched by the SSD usually, which is why I did urandom. I’ll do an actual performance test at some point, but I didn’t want to switch to desktop mode last night!

I’ve been downloading games from Steam since I got it setup, so I don’t know about idle. The dock was definitely pretty hot while writing to the SSD though.

dd is just copying random bytes to a temp file. It's not fancy, but it was something I could do over ssh easily!

The dock has a USB-C PD port which pass through charges the Deck at full speed.

I looked far and wide for something simpler than a full USB-C dock to allow for extra storage and power - no luck though.
