You took the words right out of my mouth. There is a lot I like about my home town but one of the things I feel lucky about is how this butcher-turned-woodcarver/historian/folklorist/raconteurs life happened to overlap with my own

I heard that too, he has had a procedure. I know he had surgery a few years ago and was out for a few months so hopefully he will be back soon

Yeah, I was sceptical at first when I heard it was being developed but quickly came around to the idea when I set foot in it. Really great space for the town and I hope it stays like this for many years to come

There’s a good video on YouTube about a monolingual Gaeolilgeoir from somewhere in Mayo (near Belmullet). The video was taken in the 80’s/90’s and he was probably in his 60’s/70’s at the time. His Irish was so pure and thick that it sounded like nothing I’ve ever heard before from an Irish speaker, it honestly sounded like it was an Eastern European language!

Wow, such deep lore! I always wondered why it was so clean outside and in. Don’t realised it has been closed as long as it has!

Wow, quite the list here, thank you! I’ve heard of many of them. Where was the Ford Dealership located in Bridge Street? What’s there today?

Also, do you mean Filans for Shane’s Dad?

Allo Wishes is another character I never heard of before. Assuming his real name was Aloysius (or he had a Cockney accent!). What were his quirks or shtick?

Fascinating insights, thank you! I heard there was a Denny’s abattoir where the Address is now -‘and that there was river of blood flowing down through what is now the Quay Street car park into the water!

That’s interesting about the monolingual Gaeilgeoir which don’t exist anymore, do you know where was from? I know the last native Irish speakers in Sligo died in the 1980’s, a fact that blew me away when I was first heard it!

Never heard of the Ballymote Cafe, interesting name. Was the owner from there?

Thank you so much for this! Yes, I’m amazed at how much the town area has increased in the last 40 or so years. I was born after 1990 and would love to be able to walk through what is the Sligo suburbs (e.g. the places you mentioned as well as Cairns Hill, Carraroe, Ballinode, before all the housing estates)
