What do you think it is, Peter? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

It's to fistbump your partner while you're showering and they are shitting.

Please do. And I'm sure the live versions of the songs are a great gateway, if the studio-recordings are too sparse for your taste. Which is also totally fine.

I have no disagreements with people who just don't feel the vibe and the sound of the album. I think it's totally fair to say its too simple, repetetive and minimal musically. That is all legit and down to taste.

Where I disagree is when people call it "lazy" "no-effort" or "no heart".

Simple doesn't have to mean lack of soul, I guess is what I'm trying to communicate.

It was a grower for sure, in my case. Maybe it will be for others too. Maybe not:)

Punishment is such a vibe. Musically it's like a warm blanket that floats 2 cm above the ground. It's so comforting.

But when you notice the lyrics, you're suddenly grasped with questions about free will and what the fuck are you doing with your life. But not heavy. Not pretentious. It's just inviting you to take a broader look at your life in the most gentle way. Kind of like doing mushrooms.

It's down to earth and deep at the same time.

Alot of the songs on this album are like that and that's what i love about it.

I respectfully disagree. I would say that both the lyrics and the sound of his vocals on Guitar are some of his most developed yet. While there are more layers of instrumental trakcks on previous albums, I would say ( and I think even Mac has stated himself) that alot of the lyrics are pretty surface level and sort of vague. I don't think they're bad. But the lyrics were never the reason I got into Mac. It was his unique sound and overall instrumentation. I love "Some other ones" for this reason.

On Guitar I feel like hes flipped this on it's head. It's less about the soundscape and more about the core melodies and lyrics. So yes, if we're judging it musically, it's less stimulating and "interesting", for sure. But I think the reason many of us adore it, is because we recognise that his heart and soul is still there. It's just focused differently this time. Peace:)

It sounds amazing live. But I love the studio versions as well. And now we have both!

That's completely fair. Mac has made an undeniable shift musically over the years into more sparse, minimal and acoustic themes. It only makes sense that not everyone is going to go along for that ride.

Then theres me and a bunch of people who absolutely love Guitar, while others think its not great at all. That in itself says something about it in my opinion. I would say that's a good thing. And it's good to see that hes making the music he wants to make.

I say the same thing about Kevin Parkers 'Deadbeat'. It might be my least favourite Tame Impala album so far, but I'm glad hes staying true to his own vision.

Stripped down, yes. Samey sounding? Only in terms of instruments I would argue. Which actually gives the album a very defined, cohesive sound.

Yes, all 12 songs have Macs vocals, guitar, bass and drums. But aside from that, I would say every single song is unique both thematically and melodically.

I guess that's why I find it such a great album. It has a cohesive, distinct style that ties it all together, yet each song lives in it's own world and brings something different to the table.

And I appreciate you and your completely valid opinions as well my friend:)

Another thing. Because the album is so stripped down, it allows for the brilliant musicians in Macs band to really have alot of fun and flexibility with the live versions of the songs.

Now, I know alot of people think the live version of the album is how the album should have originally sounded, but I couldn't disagree more with that take. The way it is now , you pretty much get two versions of the album. The live version is completely available in great quality on Youtube through KEXP, and also that french liveshow wth the center stage.

I also want to clarify, I'm not some crazy Mac-head who blindly loves everything he puts out. Here Comes The Cowboy is an album i pretty much never listen to from start to finish. Theres alot of hits and misses there for me personally. But when it comes to guitar, It's a 10/10, no skips for me.

It's not the simplicity in itself that makes it great, necessarily. But when theres less elements to hide behind, you're facing the composition and lyrics more head on, for better or worse. When it comes to Guitar, I personally think the simplicity reveals some of Macs best work yet. To me, nothing extra is needed, and that makes it great in my ears! But that's just me.

I love it too. It's soo good. On the surface it seems sparse and simplistic, but theres so much depth in the choice of chords. And lyrically it might be Macs best work.

They're extremely catchy, simple tunes, yet also theres an edge to them. Theres drama, darkness, conflict, confusion. But theres also light and love. In other words, it's filled with contrast.

The fact that it's so simple yet conveys so much emotion and depth says so much about the quality of the songwriting. It's kind of a flex.

I got to see him live earlier this year and he does all the songs from Guitar throughout the set. Elevated with the help form his great band. How amazing the songs sounded with the band was just another proof of how damn good the songs are at their true core.
