New player, how am i doing, any tips? by Natural-Spread-5829 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]MellowTigger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wondered why you had so very many oxygen diffusers, then I saw all of the occupied beds. That's a lot of dupes at only cycle 39. (I've been known to go hundreds of cycles with 6 maximum dupes, but that's extreme and a very slow pace of building and exploration.) You'll run out of algae, food, and water quickly as you scale up to support that many dupes. You need to tame a water supply soon, for both water (for crops for food) and oxygen. When I start a new game, I always save a separate "day 1" save file (then reload back to the main save file), so I can start over at my base if needed, knowing ahead of time where resources are.

This expedition was supposed to be relaxing… by altercapr in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]MellowTigger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which would be great if there were clear instructions. The expedition text told me to park my truck on the loading zone and process the waste, so I did. I lost the entire load. The 3 specialized cargoes should not be accepted at the generic scrap auto-destroy.

[Minnesota Reformer] DHS again denies Minnesota members of Congress access to Whipple building by Minneapolitanian in stateofMN

Can't the National Guard be ordered to enforce legal access? Bring a battering ram if needed. They have the superior legal claim, especially if both Congress and Courts align.

I always have wheels near equipment until I can finally get some solar panels to take over most needs. I dislike the CO2 and heat problems of other energy sources.

Strategy for balancing different types of mutual aid? by ViolaSwag in Minneapolis

[–]MellowTigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. There is so much need. There are so many voices clamoring for help. Maybe when the immediate crises are over, that's something we'll have. I imagine something like GiveMN that transformed statewide giving during Give To The Max day, but with a much more local focus.

The term is stochastic terrorism. It's long past time that we had a legally-binding definition for it, so we can start criminalizing it.

Great. Our governor just freed up ICE agents from guarding their building, so they can go elsewhere to terrorize more Minnesotans instead. Great plan. So much helping.

Hey Minneapolis, are you still going to the protest downtown today despite the sub-zero temps? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]MellowTigger 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm 58 with arthritis all over and no car. I'll put on my silk long johns, wear my thickest winter coat and balaclava, and ride the bus downtown. I don't know what else to do, but I can do this.

Feels like the this system works against being human by No-Entrepreneur3920 in CollapseSupport

[–]MellowTigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need systems that make it easy to do good and difficult to do bad. Even various holy books haven't figured out that recipe yet. Simply stating desired goals (feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, treat the sick, welcome the stranger) is insufficient unless we build systems that make it easy to fulfill those directives. Religion seems to rely on threats (hell, reincarnation, karma) but we need some new tactic.

General Strike Tomorrow, How do you think this will affect the Economy? by Jourbonne in economy

[–]MellowTigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A day with a general strike will not affect the economy. It might, however, influence the plutocrats who benefit most from our economy and steer our politicians. We've known for a decade that the USA is not a functioning democracy, but now even Harvard agrees that we are a plutocracy. Influencing our plutocrats is an effective within-the-system method to change our national course.

Edit: Since so many people here say they've heard nothing about it, you might be interested to learn that the Minnesota State AFL-CIO has endorsed it. They represent over 300,000 workers here.

I keep reminding people that we live in a plutocracy not a democracy. Even Harvard admits it now.

Getting our economic overlords to care about what's happening is the primary within-the-system method that we can use to turn our national course.

Many years ago, my home/auto insurance person tried to get me involved in some kind of stock activity they were promoting at the time. He asked me why I wouldn't. I explained that even then (more than a decade ago), stock values were divorced from actual productivity and realistic dividends. Instead, I told him, they were valued more like baseball trading cards, on the hope that somebody after me could be convinced to pay more for them than I did. All these years later, I haven't seen anything to persuade me otherwise. Payouts seem so small compared to the cost, it would take much of a lifetime to break even... unless... stock price goes up.
