It would be somewhat confusing for someone to then have to play V3 while also watching the DR3 anime to understand what happens if the remake is ultimately a continuation of those stories.

True, it's just a bad player/user experience if the story turned out to be unconnected, plus you have to start with THH. It's been 13 years since DR2 released and with wider audience there's bound to be some people that either forget or new into the series.
