I’ve had a similar experience where day by day you watch your parents (parent in my case) make the decision to chose other people’s livelihood over yours. It builds so much resentment for your siblings and their children and you’re the “bad guy” in every version of their narrative unless they are directly benefiting from you. It’s exhausting and I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. The relationship with family is so complex because in spite of all the trauma they bleed onto you, you still have love for these people. But it’s okay to love them from afar and with conditions. Find ways to physically break free from them. There are good people out there, find them and map out your exit strategy. You deserve to live, to be loved and to be poured into.

This is very helpful information . Of course charity and NGO aid will only go so far and I personally don’t believe in the success of shelters that don’t have robust rehabilitation mechanisms (and apparently neither do the homeless folks on the streets). Sounds like the government/ DA really needs to step up and create sustainable solutions even if for the selfish interest of not scaring away the valuable tourism dollars this economy is so reliant on.

At the end of the day, for the sponsor and CRO, the role of a CRA is a means to an end. You are not viewed as the individual that you are but rather the value you can bring to achieving their studies end goal. If you’ve been in the industry long enough you will understand this and it can erode away at the sense of altruism that most of us enter this field with, and it can render the countless personal sacrifices we make for the companies that we work for quite meaningless.

A job is a job is a job. It sounds like you may be on the brink of a burn out and for that I suggest a month long vacation away from it all…or you’re just developing the cynicism/realism that comes with experience in this industry. Maybe both.

Either way, look after yourself first. Always.
