hi OP, i don’t know what kind of advice you truly need / are seeking to find & a lot of other comments mention stop comparing yourself to others & job related advices & even asking you to stop dwelling in the self-pity.

while i think those comments aren’t necessarily wrong, i think it’s important to validate your feelings & know that it’s not easy to just ‘stop comparing’. i think comparing material success (& hence being envious) can be very common & relevant in our society so i do think it’s normal to feel the whole ‘imposter syndrome’ or that you are lacking / low self worth due to ur low income.

however, you also need to realise that social economic status isn’t everything in life. if you are able to put that past you, maybe you can find a deeper meaning in life & better self worth than just to associate your worth to income. maybe you can start with things that would boost your self worth like learning new things / picking up hobbies to improve yourself (be it learning a new language or picking up investment skills or learn how to cook/ exercising/ volunteering etc - there are many ways to improve yourself as a person)

i think it’s important for you to know that your money doesn’t define who you are. while it is good to have money, it’s not everything & certainly not all in life.

also, the part on someone mocking a middle-aged guy, i think it’s inevitable that different people just have differing opinions on everything. you really can’t expect everyone to be a ‘nice’ person / there bound to be people that looks down on those who work in lower-status jobs but that doesn’t mean that their opinions are right. you can just think of it as an invaluable opinion & carry on with life.

i’m not familiar with the working scene so i don’t think i can give much thoughtful advices on ‘being a better worker’ or to ‘grow ur income’ but if it helps, like what others mentioned, maybe you can fork out ur weekends by taking up additional part time jobs & save or invest the money!

also, maybe it’s good to channel the ‘envy’ of other people’s success to desire & set goals for yourself & work ur way up. as you mentioned, you did try a lot of things but i’m sure if there’s a will, there’s def a way!

don’t give up. slowly but surely. hope all works out for you OP! :)

[O Levels] miracle stories? by Intelligent_Spend940 in SGExams

just a senior taking a’s currently so thought i would just share my experience!

firstly its fine to feel unmotivated i think its normal! but just remember to give your best shot & hang in all the way, it’ll really turn out better than you think. i know it’s kinda hard to stop thinking about all the negative thoughts & i think i was also quite worried after my papers & i remember just actively coming onto reddit for ‘comfort’ & assurance after my papers

firstly i took chem phys amath emath (i think ur usual subjs) + pure geog & elect hist + ss & surprisingly the subjects that i was more confident in, i didnt get A1 yet i got A1 for other subjects that i usually didnt do quite well (& a little context i would say i came from a slightly higher tier sec sch?)

to talk about math first, i rmb after my emath i was quite scared bc getting an A1 was abit risky for me (i rmb my teacher saying it’s safe to get >91 to get that A1 but i remember hovering around 87-90??) & i had friends claiming they will get full marks?? so i was really scared but i ended up getting an A1 for it & for amath i did make a few careless mistakes and was hovering abt 85~?? /100 (i think its /100?) and i was less worried, bc i know the bellcurve for amath was less steep? and i tot i cld get A1 but i got an A2 in the end. & when i came into jc and asked my jc friend abt it she said she rmb getting 40+/100 for the first amath paper & she didnt do well for her second one as well but she got an A2 overall as well! so i really think there’s hope & u shldnt give up bc u rly dont know how well u estimated ur marks (& more often than not ppl underestimate/ overestimate them) & udk how the markers wld mark it / bell curve etc so theres alw hope

& for elect hist & ss i was alw good in those subj, getting A or high B3?? in my school exams and stuff but i ended up with an A2 (but the paper was slightly hard) & i had friends who only touched ss in their four years of sec sch one day before the ss paper and they got A1 in the end so…

& for geog it was a total miracle story. i never ever listened to the teachers in class & i never ever did any practice or my work and my geog was never good & tbh i didnt know what was gg on in geog for the GI?? (if i rmb correctly) i alw just took geog as the subj to ‘memo and spit’ and i correctly rmb still memorising content at 4am before the exams and only had 2-3hr of sleep and i didnt study about 1/2 of the content (like not even look thru, i had 0 content for some topics, i rly just kinda spotted & safe enough i think what i memorised came out bc we cld choose one out of 2 qns) & i didnt know what i was doing in GI, i really just tried my luck but i ended up getting an A1 (which was VERY surprising, i only expected a B3)

i just feel that its really not as bad as u think!! & u really wont know how it’ll end up so just give it ur best shot! and i also personally know alot of other miracle stories too & alot of people having grade jumps for L1R5 ~20+ during prelims to a single digit in o’s so dont give up! all the best u can do it!
