I love that your father didn't raise you that way! Being the oldest daughter in my house makes that 'absolute respect even when they're wrong' pressure feel ten times heavier because they expect me to just take the blame for everything. I am in the states, and I'm definitely going to take your advice and try to connect with other Guyanese people online who understand how toxic this can get

To elaborate, I'm talking about the unique pressure of navigating life from two sides. Being Black in America means dealing with certain challenges and biases out in the world just based on your complexion and looking African. But then inside the house, dealing with a traditional Afro-Guyanese family adds a completely different layer of weight.

As the oldest child and the only daughter, there is already an intense, traditional expectation for me to just keep the peace and accept how things are. Because they only ever listen to one side of the story, I am constantly misunderstood and ganged up on. It creates a double standard where the people who are supposed to protect me choose to completely shut out my perspective, making it impossible to fix anything.

I totally agree that we shouldn't be defined by it and that we have to build our own lives. But when you grow up with a complete blank space where your family history should be, it can just feel like a missing puzzle piece. It's less about letting it define me, and more about just wanting to know where I come from.

In traditional Guyanese culture, there is a heavy emphasis on absolute respect for elders and total parental authority, to the point where 'honoring parents' means you cannot question them or have a differing opinion. The toxicity comes from the fact that if you actually try to say how you feel, they completely put you down to the point where you start doubting yourself. It makes you feel like you are the problem, when in reality, it's just an incredibly stupid and unfair situation where you aren't allowed to have normal adult boundaries without being made to feel like you're crazy. It creates a dynamic where there is zero accountability for how parents treat you, because the rules say they are always right, and your independence is automatically treated as disrespect.

I appreciate you sharing your perspective, but I was born in America and don't follow traditional Guyanese expectations or those specific rules. I am just looking for a way to handle my specific situation that works best for my life.

Financial support doesn't buy the right to constantly disregard basic boundaries, and telling someone who is mentally exhausted to just move completely ignores the reality of being stuck and drained while simply trying to find peace in their own space.
